That about explains it. I have run Ad-Aware SE and Spybot with latest upgrades.

Somehow I think it might be associated with Adobe Acrobat Reader, though I am not sure why I think that. The problem seems to me to occur more frequently with I am viewing a PDF web page.

I'm really unhappy that you advertise Stopzilla without explaining that it costs money to use it. I wasted 2 hours scanning my machine only to find out that I had to pay money to correct the problems it found.

I could not understand the directions for downloading Mcaffee Avert Stinger, so I didn't.

I do thank you for your help, though.

One other thing. When I reboot my machine, there is a process named "clclean.0001" I find running on my machine and I automatically kill it. Nothing bad seems to happen and it does not reappear until I reboot. I can't seem to get rid of it though, even though I remove the files, they reappear.

I don't know why MSIE appears in my log so much since I never use it for anything.

In any case, here is my latest HijackThis log:

First of all, while trying to "Enable topic reply notification by default." I notice that my account has an old email address on it. I looked everywhere I could think of and asked Help "How do I change my email address" but to no avail. I'll look here for directions.

Hi softtest123,

Click My Controls (nearly top of the page) and in Menu (left column) there are the Options and click Change e-mail Address.

Well I have followed the instructions the best I can.

After fixing my email address (BTW, there is another step between "Options" and "Change email address" but I found it) my email topic reply is enabled.

I've cleaned up my system and browser.

Ad-Aware and Spybot reported nothing.

Housecall is the only malware program that is supposed to run with my browser but the first attempt to run it crashed my browser and on two successive attempts merely hung up and produced no results after running two hours each time.

I downloaded the latest version of McAfee AVERT Stinger and running it found no problems. The screen blackout occurred far more frequently while running Stinger though I could recover with a cursor movement.

My firewall is running.

I have Automatic updates running daily and assume my operating system is up to date.

Here is the latest Hijackthis log:

Hi softtest123,

Welcome to BleepingComputer Forums and thanks again for your patience.

To begin with: I understand you're worried and try anything you can think of to solve your computer problems, but it's best to wait for instructions and stick to them. In short: don't change anything while you're helped.

1.

My firewall is running.

I assume that's the firewall belonging to Norton Internet Security 2006? You have disabled Windows Internal Firewall, right?

2. Click on Start, Settings, Control Panel and double-click on Add or Remove Programs. From within Add or Remove Programs uninstall the following program:

PokerStars.NET

3. Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. A malicious site could render Java content under older, vulnerable versions of Sun's software if the user has not removed them. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Plattform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "English".
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click "Continue".
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u4-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
4. Run HijackThis, click Scan and checkmark the following entries:

O9 - Extra button: PokerStars.net - {FA9B9510-9FCB-4ca0-818C-5D0987B47C4D} - C:\Program Files\PokerStars.NET\PokerStarsUpdate.exe

I'm unfamiliar with this setting. Do you know what it refers to? If not checkmark this entry:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,AutoConfigURL = http://wpad.wildblue.com/wpad.dat

Close all browsers and windows, except for HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button; close HijackThis!

5. Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete the following folder in bold if it still exists:

C:\Program Files\PokerStars.NET

6. Knowing you're not in favour of IE I still want to ask you to run F-Secure online scan. The scan is very effective and efficient and removes malware right away.

Run the F-Secure Online Scanner
Note: This Scanner is for Internet Explorer Only!
Follow the Instruction here for installation.
Accept the License Agreement.
Once the ActiveX installs,Click Full System Scan
Once the download completes, the scan will begin automatically.
The scan will take some time to finish, so please be patient.
When the scan completes, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button.
Click the Show Report button and Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

7. Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts. If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not malicious.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt in your next reply. If you have any problems with the logs, both can be found in C:\Deckard\System Scanner.
Please post the DSS main/extra logs along with the F-Secure report!!

I do not understand why I should remove PokerStars.NET. As far as I know this is a program run by a million or so people worldwide and I have never heard of a problem with it. Is there another program of the same name? In any case, I play poker pretty much every day and I would miss this program. What is the security risk?

I will work on the other recommendations.

I have taken no other actions to correct this problem other than refer the problem to you. Of course life moves on and sometimes I have to reboot my machine and sometimes I remove old programs I no longer use. Is this a problem for you?

I have really done everything I could think of to kill IE and I'm not sure why I have to run it. I'm not sure it will ever run again on this machine.

Does this mean you cannot help me?

As you can see Partypoker.net is considered an unwanted program. The reason is that Partypoker and such programmes are often supported by malware and get installed without consent.

If you installed it yourself and wish to use it then let it be.

I have really done everything I could think of to kill IE and I'm not sure why I have to run it. I'm not sure it will ever run again on this machine.

It's up to you which browser you want to use. The online scanner is known to be very thorough and effective so that's why I recommended it. But if you don't want to we use another scanner:

Before we start fixing anything you should print out these instructions or copy them to a NotePad file so they will be accessible. Some steps will require you to disconnect from the Internet or use Safe Mode and you will not have access to this page.

Please download DrWeb-CureIt & save it to your desktop. DO NOT perform a scan yet.

Reboot your computer in "SAFE MODE" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Scan with DrWeb-CureIt as follows:
  • Double-click on drweb-cureit.exe to start the program. An "Express Scan of your PC" notice will appear.
  • Under "Start the Express Scan Now", Click "OK" to start. This is a short scan that will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the Yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it.
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options > Change settings
  • Choose the "Scan tab" and UNcheck "Heuristic analysis"
  • Back at the main window, click "Custom Scan", then Select drives (a red dot will show which drives have been chosen).
  • Then click the "Start/Stop Scanning" button (green arrow on the right) and the scan will start.
  • When done, a message will be displayed at the bottom advising if any viruses were found.
  • Click "Yes to all" if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can see the icon next to the files found. If so, click it, then click the next icon right below and select "Move incurable".
(This will move it to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofile\DoctorWeb\Quarantine folder if it can't be cured)
  • Next, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list.
  • Save the DrWeb.csv report to your desktop.
  • Exit Dr.Web Cureit when done.
  • Important! Reboot your computer because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web in your next reply. (You can use Notepad to open the DrWeb.cvs report)
Don't forget the other logs requested.

Okay. There may be a problem with PokerStars.NET, though I would be surprised if it is applications specific. The rate that the screen went terminally black went down when I simply exited this program. I may uninstall it, download the latest version and reinstall it, but:

I am having problems upgrading my Java runtime having gotten the message:

"Your download transaction cannot be approved. Contact Customer Service."

I have notified Sun's customer service and they promise response withing 24 hours.

Yes, I am running the Norton Firewall with MS firewall disabled.

Thanks for hanging in.

I'm working on it.

First of all, there was a defect in the Sun Java download site that did not allow me to download the upgrade to the runtime package.

I worked with their support group and that problem is now resolved -- I am now installing that fix.

I have one set of of the logs you requested and will attach them here, after the Java fix, I will download the other package and collect that data for you.

The DSS reports:

I have not forgotten.

I found I was able to run F-Secure Online Scanner by simply allowing IE any access F-Secure required. It took a long time to run and it discovered some 3000+ viruses and malware, mostly if not all, stored in Norton's "Quarantine". I have been letting F-Secure run for 4 days attempting to clean up these percieved problems (I couldn't tell whether there were other problems it detected.)

F-Secure was taking a long time to clean up a single problem. It appears to me that F-Secure must download the fix procedure code for each problem on it's list. Apparently the communication timeout is set pretty tight because it fails most of the time. I have a satellite Internet connection (WildBlue) and the prorogation delay is significant. A ping typically requires 1.5 seconds and sometime even times out.

This morning, with a brief glimpse of the IE page before it went black (not the whole screen, only the IE page) it appeared the F-Secure was ready to prepare a report, maybe it got finished. At that point IE crashed. I sent the error report to Microsoft. Gives you an idea why I distrust IE so much.

Anyway, if there is useful data to be recovered from this exercise, I will be glad to hunt it down and post it.

Meanwhile, I'll give DrWeb-CureIt a try.

Is there a good, reasonably priced, COTS package that would perform this function?
