I have a HP Pavillion dv4000 laptop computer that is 2 years old used by my teen aged daughter. It has an Intel Pentium M with 1.60GHz, 504 MB RAM running Windows XP Professional SP2. Over the last 2 months or so it has been getting progressively slower, to the point now where it takes almost 1/2 hr to boot up and each new window takes several minutes to load.
I have done a complete clean-up including a full Norton Internet Security scan, AVG Antispyware scan, Spybot S&D scan, Adaware 2007 scan, Registry Clean, Defrag, Startup clean out, CHKDSK, Scandisc, Adjustment of Processes, and several other more esoteric methods to help improve performance. All of this has improved response time significantly, but the system remains very slow.
The system has 55 Gig of hard drive space with 42 Gig used and 13 Gig free. About 25 Gig is used by her pics and music (none of which she is willing to get rid of onto storage discs or external HD).
I've come to the end of my knowledge base as to how to improve computer performance. I really need some help here as my daughter is a Senior in HS on her way to college, and absolutely depends on this laptop to do almost all her schoolwork.
Below please find the most recent HJT log for this system.

Welcome to the BleepingComputer HijackThis Logs and Analysis forum mpetrodoc
My name is Richie and i'll be helping you to fix your problems.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad".
Read this article:
http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546
You are well advised to remove the program now.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present, then restart your pc:
Viewpoint
Viewpoint Manager
Viewpoint Media Player

Your version of Sun Java is out of date.
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older versions of Sun Java, and then update.
1. Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE)
2. Scroll down to where it says 'Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 update 4'.
3. Click the "Download" button to the right.
4. Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
5. The page will refresh.
6. Click on the link to download 'Windows Offline Installation jre-6u4-windows-i586-p.exe' [15.12 MB] and save to your desktop.
7. Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
8. Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
9. Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
10. Click the Change/Remove button.
11. Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
12. Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
13. Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u4-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Clear your 'System Restore' points by doing the following:
Right-click on 'My Computer' and select 'Properties'.
Select 'System Restore'.
Select 'Turn Off System Restore On All Drives'.
Select 'Apply'.
You will then get the following warning:
"You have chosen to turn off System Restore.
If you continue, all existing restore points will be deleted, and you will not be able to track or undo changes to your computer.
Do you want to turn off System Restore?".
Then select 'Yes',your 'System Restore' directories will be purged.

Restart your pc.

Turn 'System Restore' back on:

Right click on 'My Computer' and select 'Properties'.
Select 'System Restore'.
Unselect 'Turn Off System Restore On All Drives'.
Select 'Apply',then click 'Ok'.

Download\install CleanUp.
Launch CleanUp,then click on 'Options'.
Now move the slider on the left up to 'Standard Cleanup!'.
Click 'Ok',now run the program by clicking on the 'Cleanup' button.
Reboot,or log off/log on when it's finished.

If you have previously downloaded ComboFix,please delete that version now.
Warning
You should NOT use Combofix unless you have been instructed to do so by a Malware Removal Expert.
It is intended by its creator to be used under the guidance and supervision of an expert,NOT for private use.
Using this tool incorrectly could render your system/pc inoperable.

Now download Combofix by sUBs and save to your desktop.
Alternative Combofix download link HERE.
Note
It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop

Close any open browsers.
Double click on combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's finished it will produce a log.
Post the entire contents of C:\ComboFix.txt into your next reply.
Note
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running.
That may cause the program to freeze/hang.

Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt unless I ask.
Note
In case your Antivirus or any other realtime scanner is displaying an alert after you downloaded Combofix or while you use Combofix, please disable your scanner and redownload Combofix again.
Some scanners may see some combofix related components as suspicious and block or delete them while there's nothing wrong with them.

Also post a new Hijackthis log please.

The machine is running marginally faster. However, it is still really slow. For instance, it takes 80 seconds to open Word, and 50 seconds to open Firefox. During any activity, Task Manager shows CPU usage going up to 90- 100%. Could this be some sort of hardware problem? The machine is only two years old!

Here are the results of the scans. As you can see, they took FOREVER!!!!

Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe again to run it.
Click on the 'Cleanup' button Posted Image
When you do this a text file named cleanup.txt will be downloaded from the internet.
If you get a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTMoveIt attempting to contact the internet you should allow it to do so.
When the 'Confirm' box appears click 'Yes'.
Restart your pc when prompted.

Have Hijack This fix the following by placing a check in the appropriate boxes and selecting 'Fix checked'.
Make sure all browser and all Windows Explorer windows are closed before fixing:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

If you have the Norton Internet Security installation disk, try uninstalling/reinstalling the program.
If there is no uninstaller available in Add\Remove Programs then you will need to download and run the Norton Removal Tool:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...005033108162039
*Please Note*
The Norton Removal Tool will remove all Norton/Symantec products from your pc.

Click Start/Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs and remove/uninstall the following, then restart your pc.
AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5
SUPERAntiSpyware

Open 'My Computer',right click on 'Local Disk C:',and select 'Properties'.
Click on the 'Tools' tab, then click 'Check Now...' in the 'Error checking' window.
In the opening 'Check Disk Local Disk C:' window checkmark both the boxes:
'Automatically fix file system errors'
'Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors'.
Then press 'Start',follow the prompts.

If you have the MS Windows XP installation disk.
With the MS Windows XP installation in the cd-rom drive, boot to the Recovery Console.
Configure your computer to start from the CD-ROM drive if necessary.
[Boot into the Bios and set your CD-Rom drive as first boot device].
For more information about how to do this, refer to your computer's documentation or contact your computer manufacturer.
At the prompt type chkdsk /r then press Enter.
Leave a space in between chkdsk and /r
This process could take up to an hour or more, allow it to run until its finished.

Try the following.
Disconnect from the internet.
Click on Start>Run,type msconfig then press Enter.
Under the 'Startup' tab uncheck EVERYTHING,then reboot.
If everything seems to be back up to speed, start adding items/entries back by rechecking the boxes one at a time.
Reboot in between each one.
Using trial and error, keep doing that until you find the problem program/process.
*Note*
Don't forget to make sure your antivirus and firewall are running before you reconnect to the internet.

Combofix is not being removed. I'm getting a messsage saying, Windows cannot find "C:\system\32\kmd.exe". Make sure you typed the name correctly and then try again.
What do I do?

Now when I open MoveIt, and click on CleanUp, I get an error message saying "Unable to contact the internet. CleanUp list download failed." I have no problem contacting the internet through my browsers.

Thanks. I've done all of that and the computer is running MUCH faster (although not like new). Removing Norton seems to have done wonders. I do know that Norton security suite is a notorious resource hog.
My concern now is what will I use for antispyware, antivirus, etc. now that I've removed Norton AVG and Superspyware?

Removing Norton seems to have done wonders. I do know that Norton security suite is a notorious resource hog.

I trust you've reinstalled it as i suggested earlier!

If you have not reinstalled Norton,i suggest you do the following straight away or you'll soon be in trouble.

Please download/install Avira AntiVir Personal Edition Classic[Free]:
http://www.free-av.com/
Perform a full scan with Avira and allow it to delete everything it detects.
Restart your pc when you've done.
After restart, open Avira Antivirus and select "Reports".
Then double click the report from the full scan you have just completed.
Click the "Report File" button, then copy and paste the report into your next reply.

You have Service Pack 2 installed so i'm presuming you're using the Windows Firewall.
You may be behind a hardware firewall(Router/NAT),but it would'nt hurt to install a third party software firewall to henhance protection.
A word of warning regarding the Windows Firewall in Service Pack 2,it only filters INCOMING traffic.
That means if malware happens to compromise your PC,it will be able to SEND OUT out your credit card data, and any other personal information.
I suggest you install a more robust third party firewall from below that filters both INCOMING and OUTGOING traffic.

Sygate Personal Firewall Free Edition:
http://www.filehippo.com/download_sygate_personal_firewall/
Comodo Personal Firewall:
http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/
Outpost Firewall Free:
http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpostfree/index.php

You should take the time to read the following:
Understanding and Using Firewalls
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/understanding-and-using-firewalls/

Post a new Hijackthis log when you're done.
Let me know how your machine is running now.

Why would I reinstall the very program which slowed the machine down to a crawl. Could I not do just as well with AVG antivirus = antispyware programs?

Why would I reinstall the very program which slowed the machine down to a crawl.

Because as far as i'm aware you had no virus protection installed at that point.

Could I not do just as well with AVG antivirus = antispyware programs?

If you want to install AVG7 Free Antivirus then go ahead,i personally prefer Avira AntiVir Personal Edition Classic[Free].
AVG7 Free Edition Antivirus:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/

I suggest you install one of the above firewalls as well.

Let me know how you get on.
