Hi,

I think I am affected with some kind of virus, but not sure exactly what.

Suspicious points to look at.

-Had some kind of accesss intrusion in my Spybot TeaTimer, when I was trying to shut down my computer, everytime I clicked something, it re-appeared. Precursor to this I blocked the change Spybot was detecting with AOL Fast Start Up earlier wasn't sure what it was so I stopped it.

-Hosts have changed according to AVG, but doesn't list anything as infection.

-Can't download Microsoft Windows updates, saying I am not the administrator when it is clearly the case.

-Errors when trying to scan in Trendmicro, says file can't be delivered.

-Generally computer is still pretty fast, but shutting down takes a lot longer, and slight time when starting up.

-Windows defender randomly showed up a couple of weeks, back, whenever I used a spyware scanner, it scanned aswell according to the temporary internet files in CCleaner, until I stopped it.

-Quite a few times the internet connection would break down and I'd have to reconnect, frequency reduced a lot when I got Spybot.

-Taskeng.exe and explorer.exe asked for access to the internet according to my Zonealarm Firewall, I stopped both.

Help would be greatly appreciated, I know you guys must be really busy, I hope you can find some time for me.

No problem, I appreciate it must be quite difficult to keep up with the amount of people asking for help . I have done another log as requested. This time, had problems with Trend Micro's Houscall and couldn't get software definitions for Ad-aware 2007, but the rest were fine (got definition updates for Ad-ware etc). Found out I had already the lastest important Windows updates, as well.

I had to create a second administrator account recently, then deleted my first one, where I believe my computer was first nfected, it probably won't make a difference against the viruses, but I feared the password could be compromised so I created a new account on the computer.

Here's my log;

Hey Yosho,

thanks for posting a fresh HijackThis log.

Step #1

While Spybot's TeaTimer is normally a wonderful tool to protect against hijackers, it can also interfere with HijackThis fixes. So please disable TeaTimer by doing the following:
  • Run Spybot-S&D
  • Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
  • On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
  • Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
You can reenable TeaTimer once your system is clean.

Step #2

Run HijackThis, press Scan, and put a check mark next to all these entries:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

Close all other windows and browsers, and press the Fix Checked button.

Step #3

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  • Close ALL applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt to your post.
The logs can be quite lengthy..use two post if you need to get them all in.

Step #4

Please post back with the main.txt and the extra.txt of the DSS scan. Thanks.

Hi, here's how I progressed for each step.

Step 1

I opened Resident, Tools in Spybot Search and Destroy, it told me that I was missing administrative rights. So I re-opened it as "Run as administrator", where I successfully found the Teatimer option, but to my surprise it was already unchecked.

Step 2

I was trying to scan Hijackthis, but it says some parts of it was denied write access by Systems32/hosts, so I ran it as administrator, where I was successfully able to properly obtain a Hijack this log, this maybe becaucse of me having a new administrator account and not the original one, or the virus maybe meddling since this was something AVG listed as "hosts changed" during it scans in the previously, but didn't list it as an infection.

To the point I was able to fix check the items you told me to correct.

Step 3

Successfully downloaded and scanned with DSS.

Step 4

Here's my main.txt file, the extra.txt will be in the next post.

Hey Yosho,

There are no signs of malware in your logs. The most likely cause of your issues is the fact you are running Norton 360, that includes a firewall, along with ZoneAlarm and AVG. Below is some general information about why you don't want to install more than one antivirus and more than one firewall, I'll just tell you right now that malware is not likely the problem, you have serious software conflicts.

Step #1

I do not recommend that you have more than one anti virus product installed and running on your computer at a time. The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, then those products which do not encrypt the virus strings within them can cause other anti virus products to cause "false alarms". It can also lead to a clash as both products fight for access to files which are opened again this is the resident/automatic protection. In general terms, the two programs may conflict and cause:
  • False Alarms: When the anti virus software tells you that your PC has a virus when it actually doesn't.
  • System Performance Problems: Your system may lock up due to both software products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
Using two software firewalls on a single computer could cause issues with connectivity to the Internet or other unexpected behavior. Further, running multiple software firewalls can cause conflicts that are hard to identify and troubleshoot. Only one of the firewalls can receive the packets over the network and process them. Sometimes you may even have a conflict that causes neither firewall to protect your connection. However, you can use a hardware firewall (your router) and a software firewall in conjunction. For more information see "The Differences and Features of Hardware & Software Firewalls" and Bleepingcomputer's tutorial on Firewalls - "Understanding and using Firewalls".

Therefore you need to choose which one firewall and one anitvirus (AV) you want to keep and which to uninstall. For now, since you have probably paid for Norton, let's uninstall AVG and ZoneAlarm. You can always switch to something else later if you want. BTW, ZA by itself can be a problem on some systems and it is being reported that it doesn't get along well with just Norton's AV.

1. See this link for instructions to uninstall AVG: http://www.grisoft.com/doc/51/us/crp/0/num/288

2. To completely uninstall ZoneAlarm (and be sure to disable it as instructed before uninstalling): http://forums.zonealarm.com/zonelabs/board/message?board.id=AllowAccess&message.id=103

Reboot your system when asked and let me know if the symptoms you describe go away or change. Norton may be corrupted now as well and need to be reinstalled but I will know better about that after you have replied.

Step #2

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. A malicious site could render Java content under older, vulnerable versions of Sun's software if the user has not removed them. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Plattform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "English".
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click "Continue".
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u4-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Step #3

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This changed from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

I suggest you remove the program now. Click on start > run > and then paste the following into the "open" field: appwiz.cpl and press OK. From within Add or Remove Programs uninstall the following if they exist: Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player.

Step #4

Please post back with a fresh HijackThis log. Thanks.

Hey Yourhighness,

Step 1

After I took off AVG and ZA, things are a lot better. The computer is running more smoothly on the internet, its not having any problem accessing websites like google etc.

Step 2

Fine

Step 3

Fine

The only problem I was having with the connection was Error 619: A connection to the remote computer could not be established, so the port used for this connection was closed...", a couple of times before I took off Viewpoint products and after I took off AVG and ZA, but it hasn't happened after I took off Viewpoint.

Sometimes the internet connection broke down, but it very rarely occurs, things are generally back to normal.

Step 4

Here's the new Hijack Log, still had to "run as administrator" to get around the system32/hosts thing, but its probably because of this being the second administrator account and not the original. If everything is cool, I'll put Teatimer back on.

I'd also like to say thanks, for taking your time to sort this problem, it seems I was the victim of my own making, causing software clashes, lol.

Here's the new Hijack this log,

Hey Yosho,

...it seems I was the victim of my own making, causing software clashes, lol.

Yes, thats it. Just a few final things though:

Your log(s) show that you are using so called peer-to-peer or file-sharing programmes (in your case uTorrent). These programmes allow to share files between users as the name(s) suggest. In today's world the cyber crime has come to an enormous dimension and any means is used to infect personal computers to make use of their stored data or machine power for further propagation of the malware files. A popular means is the use of file-sharing tools as a tremendous amount of prospective victims can be reached through it.

It is therefore possible to be infected by downloading manipulated files via peer-to-peer tools and thus suggested to be used with intense care. Some further readings on this subject, along the included links, are as follows: "File-Sharing, otherwise known as Peer To Peer" and "Risks of File-Sharing Technology."

It is also important to note that sharing entertainment files and proprietary software infringes the copyright laws in many countries over the world and you are putting yourself at risk of being indicted through organisations watching over the rights of the authors of such files (i.e. the RIAA for music files, or the MPAA for movie files in the USA) or the authors of the files themselves.

Naturally there are also legal ways to use these services, such as downloading Linux distributions or office suites such as "Open Office."

Step #1

Some tidying up:

Run HijackThis, press Scan, and put a check mark next to all these entries:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =

Close all other windows and browsers, and press the Fix Checked button.

Step #2

Please post back with a fresh HijackThis log. Thanks.

Hey Yourhighness,

Appreciate the reminder about torrents. Took utorrent off a few weeks back, thought it wasn't good for the forementioned reasons. Is it still on my computer? I am sure I took it off my list of programs never really used it.

I fix checked the two lines you wanted me to do, here is my latest Hijack This Log,

Hey Yosho,

There is no sign of utorrent itself directly, but rather the following folder suggesting its current / previous usage: "C:\Program Files\uTorrent". You should delete it, so that nothing is left behind.

Please remove DSS.exe from your system, you will not need it anymore. Along with the file on the desktop, you should also delete the following folder: "C:\Deckard"

Therefore, please navigate to and delete the following:

DSS.exe
C:\Deckard
C:\Program Files\uTorrent

The HijackThis log entries do not show anything to worry about anymore. Additionally, please note that the security of MS Vista is much better than that of the MS XP series and thus you do not really need the Spybot S&D.

To clean up your hard drive a bit, you may want to follow the instructions posted here: "Windows Vista Help: Delete Files Using Disk Cleanup"

Finally, and definitely the MOST IMPORTANT step, click on the following tutorial and follow each step listed there:

Simple and easy ways to keep your computer safe and secure on the Internet

Glad I was able to help and if there any other problems related to your computer please feel free to post them in the appropriate forum. Though we help people with spyware and viruses here at BC, we also help people with other computer problems! Do not forget to tell your friends about us!

Hey YourHighness,

I was able successfully to delete those files, I was surprised to see Utorrent there still, haha. Also took off Spybot Search and Destroy. Thanks again for all the help you have given and hope everyone at BC keeps up the good work. I will keep that last link/article in mind.
