Hi hotrod5,

I'm sorry it's taken so long for you to get a response. If you still need help please do as follows:

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply
Once complete, please post both DSS logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you.
Also, please tell me how your computer is behaving now.

Hi hotrod5,

Please tell me what symptoms you are experiencing and why you think your machine may be infected.

Please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, look down the list for this and remove it:

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2

This is out of date and now a security risk, you can get the latest update (version 6 update 4) from here

You have Viewpoint Media Player installed on your system. This program is not malware but it is foistware in that it is usually installed without the user's knowledge or approval, and for this reason I recommend you remove it. If you actually use this program, I recommend you try using safe and free alternatives such as VLC Media Player.
To remove, find and remove Viewpoint Media Player

You have LimeWire, a P2P file sharing program installed on your computer. This program does not come bundled with malware as some similar programs do, but peer-to-peer file sharing networks are one of the biggest sources of malware we see. Anything downloaded from them cannot be trusted to be clean, because even if the file appears to be what it claims to be, it can have malware embedded in it.
I recommend you remove it, but of course the choice is yours.
You can remove Limewire via Add/Remove Programs.

Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/.../search/ie.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.com

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Then please do an online scan with Kaspersky:
Open Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer using this link:
http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/d...kavwebscan.html
  • Click Accept and the web scanner will begin to load
  • If a yellow warning bar appears at the top of the browser, click it and choose Install ActiveX Control
  • You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, click Install
  • If you are prompted about another ActiveX control called Kaspersky Online Scanner GUI part then allow it to be installed also.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT and then Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • The program will start to scan your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on the Save as Text button and save the file to your desktop
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Once complete, please post the Kaspersky log along with a new HijackThis log. Also, let me know about the symptoms you are experiencing.

Hi hotrod5,

Use Windows Explorer (right-click Start, select Explore) to find and delete the following files:

C:\Documents and Settings\Nick\My Documents\Temporary\Holes-Movie.wma
C:\Documents and Settings\Nick\Shared\01 Track 1 (holes).wma
C:\Documents and Settings\Nick\Shared\01 Track 1 (sweet).wma
C:\Documents and Settings\Nick\Shared\02 Track 2 (holes).wma
C:\Documents and Settings\Nick\Shared\06 Track 6 (holes).wma
C:\Program Files\Screensavers.com\SSSInstaller\bin\sinstaller3.exe

If you have trouble finding or deleting any, please let me know in your next response.

Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Press OK and Yes to confirm

The ad.yieldmanager problem is not likely to be due to infection. ad.yieldmanager.com is an advertising-related domain which is blocked by many custom hosts files - you have a custom hosts file, probably as a result of Spybot's immunization features. Some websites try to force you to redirect through a website like ad.yieldmanager.com in order to set a tracking cookie. This is not usually noticeable, but when the domain is blocked it can cause a problem.

We can temporarily remove this protection to see if this resolves the problem:
Download HostsXpert to your Desktop
  • Unzip HostsXpert.zip
  • Double click on HostsXpert.exe
  • Click Backup/Restore->Create Backup to back up your existing hosts file
  • Then click on Restore Original Hosts and OK the prompt to restore your Hosts file to the default
  • Close program when complete.
Now try surfing to the relevant site(s) and see if you have any problems.

Once complete, please let me know if you had any difficulty deleting those infected files, and let me know if restoring the hosts file resolved the problem you are experiencing.

Thanks for the followup, I just finished reverting to the default hosts file, deleted all temp/internet files, ran cleanmgr again to be sure, and surfed to a known web page where I would get a redirect. Unfortunately, I still have the same issue, here's the page I'm redirected to:

http://www.google.com/hws/gateway/afe?hl=e...ype&rdr=afe

Thanks.

Hi hotrod5,

The page you are seeing is an error page produced because your browser couldn't open the page it was directed to.

The actual error page is not standard, it is a Google/Gateway error page which is shown as a result of having "Browser Address Error Redirector" installed on your computer. You can remove this program via Add/Remove Programs and the browser behavior should return to normal.

However, removing the program probably won't stop you getting an error, it won't be the Google/Gateway error page but just a normal browser error page. It's likely that the cause of the error is a protection program of some sort, as yieldmanager.com is an advertising-related domain. It might be another element of Spybot's immunization, you might try undoing all immunization to see if that resolves the problem.

Is it possible to give me an example link so I can see if I get an error also?

Also, please confirm whether you were able to delete those files successfully.
