Whilst my daughter was watching a TV programme online, the screen dimmed around the video picture. At this point, she accidently caught the power cable to her laptop which immediately cut the power off. When she restarted the laptop, the screen remained very dim rendering the laptop useless unless an external monitor is used. If you shine a torch on the screen you can just make out the image.

The laptop is a Acer Aspire 1310 (I know, it's quite old!). OS is Win XP. I have looked in control panel but can't find any clues there. I have also carried out the last resort of restoring the machine to factory settings and much to my surprise the problem is still there.

The website she was on at the time was www.videostic.com via www.sidereel.com. The video player was DivX.

Any help or ideas would be most gratefully accepted.

If not the screen itself, probably the backlight. I wouldn't have a clue where to tell you to look for one in the UK other the eBay.com.uk
