Hi,

First time here.
My PC problems started when I noticed all kinds of windows security alert / internet attack messages popping up when connected to internet. My home page was redirected to some internet security site and various processes seemed to randomly start running on their own.
Tried to follow all the guidelines you suggest before posting but I am running into some problems even while doing this. I ran adaware and then spybot s&d. Both programs brought up alerts and I followed instructions to remove as best I could. What threw me was at the end of spybot when it asked if I wanted to allow modification of registry items. Since I initiated the search I said OK to each of these. Now I cant launch IE... (accessed this site via Firefox). So far I havent seen the problematic security alert pop ups but am not sure its really clean and obviously I have messed something up due to my new IE problem.
I Ran HijackThis but as you recommend I dont want to make any changes until I get some professional advice on my specific problems.
My HijackThis Log is copied below. Thanks in advance for your help.

I just wanted to update on my situation for anyone coming to help (hope this isn't considered a "bump" - I'm not sure what that means).

Two things:

1. I forgot to mention (it had been a long night...) that I have already tried to use the self help SmitFraud fix mentioned on this site. It looked like it worked as when I was in safemode all the bogus protection shortcuts on my desktop were gone. However once I restarted everything came back immediately (shortcuts, pop ups etc).

2. I mentioned below that I hadn't seen any problems after running spybot s&d. Well... I can take that back now as its business as usual with the pop ups. They are busy accumulating on my desktop.

I'm not sure I have the patience needed for this process... Debating if I should try and back up any critical files and try wiping my machine and starting over...

Hello mrbrown,

Sorry for the late reply, but as you can see we handle more than our fair share of logs. If you still have problems please post a fresh HijackThis log and we can begin the cleaning process.

Regards,
SNOWHITE

Hello SNOWHITE,

Thanks for your reply. I realize you are all busy. I think my problem is taken care of (knock on wood). While waiting for a reply from your site I did a system restore to a date prior to my problems starting and then did a number of scans with various software your site recommends and cleaned off whatever came up. Since then I have not seen the specific problems I had originally described.
If you want to still take a look and comment about what you see I would appreciate it. I just created a new log and pasted it below.

Thanks again.

Hi mrbrown

Looks good, but lets do more research just in case if something is hiding there.

Step #1

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.
What DSS will do:
  • create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
  • clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
  • check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review. DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.
Step #2

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:

o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:

+ Extended (If available otherwise Standard)

    o Scan Options:

    + Scan Archives
    + Scan Mail Bases

  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Note: This scanner will work with Internet Explorer Only!

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

Step #3

Download and Save Blacklight to your desktop (choose "I ACCEPT" then click "DOWNLOAD" on the website).

Double-click fsbl.exe then accept the agreement, click > "Scan" then > "Next".

You'll see a list of all items found. There will also be a log on your desktop with the name "fsbl.xxxxxxxxxxxxxx.log" (the xxxxxxxxxxxxxx stand for numbers).

Copy and paste this log in your next reply. Don't choose the rename option yet! I want to see the log first, because legitimate items can also be present there, such as "wbemtest.exe"

In your next post please include the following reports:
  • Kaspersky report
  • Blacklight report
  • dss scan reports main.txt and extra.txt
Regards,
SNOWHITE

Hi SNOWHITE,

It took awhile, but I got through the scans and have the reports you requested.

Kaspersky: Seems to have found some things.

Blacklight: I wasn't sure if I should proceed to "next" after completing the scan... It still generated a report so I stopped and figure I can run it again if this isn't what you wanted.

dss reports: are included below.

I look forward to your comments.

Thanks!

Hello mrbrown,

Sorry for the delay. Please follow steps below:

Step #1

Please download the OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
  • Copy the text below to the clipboard by highlighting it and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    EmptyTemp
  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List Of Files/Patterns To Search For and Move" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt2
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Step #2

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. A malicious site could render Java content under older, vulnerable versions of Sun's software if the user has not removed them. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Plattform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "English".
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click "Continue".
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.

    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0

  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u4-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Step #3

Looking over your log, it seems you don't have any evidence of an anti-virus software.

Anti-virus software are programs that detect, cleanse, and erase harmful virus files on a computer, Web server, or network. Unchecked, virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others, including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge, anti-virus software should be updated frequently. Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present, and will clean, delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Please download a free anti-virus software from one these excellent vendors:
It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts. If you choose to install more than one antivirus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.

Please post back with OTMoveIt report, and new HijackThis.

Regards,
SNOWHITE

Hi SNOWHITE,
Below are the requested reports. First OTMoveIt then HijackThis.
FYI - I also installed Avast! 4 Home Edition and when it ran on reboot it found a couple of viruses. As this was the first time I had seen the program run I wasn't sure what to do. One I deleted and one I "stored". I need to spend some time with the program to get a better idea of how it works. Anyway, I have that report available if you want to take a look. Let me know.
Thanks for your help.

Hi SNOWHITE,

Here are the requested reports.
Since fixing the item you mentioned in HiJackThis, my computer seems to be working fine. I haven't used it a lot yet but will keep on going and will give you an update by end of day Sunday.

As always, I appreciate your help.

Nothing to be worry in the report. The first file was in system restore and was not active, I will post instructions to you below for cleaning system restore points and creating new one. The second one is false positive, you can read explanation HERE.

So far I havent noticed anything out of the oridinary while using my computer.
Thanks!

You are welcome and I am glad I could help.

Double click OTMoveIt once again and you should see a CleanUp! button, press that button, you may get prompt by your firewall that OTMoveIt tries to contact internet, allow this, a cleanup.txt will be downloaded, a message dialog will ask you if you want to proceed with the cleanup process, click Yes.

NOTE: This will remove some of the tools we used so far, including OTMoveIt.

I will keep your thread open for a couple of days, if the malware problem reappear feel free to post here. Please take time to read my recommendations below, also follow steps from 1 - 7.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Secunia Software Inspector
Check for other vulnerable programs running on your PC that are in need of an update.
http://secunia.com/software_inspector
Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see this link:
Understanding and Using Firewalls

SPYWAREBLASTER
SpywareBlaster prevents the installation of malicious ActiveX, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software. Blocks spyware/tracking cookies & restricts the actions of potentially unwanted sites.

Unlike other programs, SpywareBlaster does not have to remain running in the background. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html

IE-SPYAD
IE/Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites. A tutorial on installing this product can be found here:
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/resource.htm

COMODO BOClean
BOClean runs automatically in the background without interfering with your work and kills malwares INSTANTLY the moment they activate without giving them the chance to invade your machine. A tutorial on installing this product can be found here:
http://www.comodo.com/boclean/boclean.html

WINPATROL
Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. A tutorial for this product is located here:
http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html

A-SQUARED Anti-Dialer
