Like the topic title says, my computer has recently become very slow and is constantly freezing...I tried to clean it up using the preparation guide but, so far, nothing seems to have changed. I'm very careful with my downloads and web activity, so I have no idea why it's behaving like this - the biggest changes I've made were to install MS Office 2007 (which takes about 5 minutes to load each time) and I upgraded my Internet service (they offered a free Security package download, which I took advantage of).

Well, here's my HijackThis log! Thanks in advance for any input/help!

Hey Falu! No problem about the wait...I can see that you're all busy!

I downloaded Ad-Aware, Spybot, and Stinger and ran all of them. I did my Windows Update, and have a firewall also. Only problem is that Housecall and Panda always refuse to work on my computer - I tried them multiple times and they just ended up freezing my computer so I didn't end up cleaning with them.

Hope that's okay...here's my latest log:

Hi Shia,

Welcome to BleepingComputer Forums and thanks again for your patience.

Hey Falu! No problem about the wait...I can see that you're all busy!

Thanks for the understanding.

Nothing bad showing in your log so to begin with just some cleaning.

1. Run HijackThis, click Scan and checkmark the following entries:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

Close all browsers and windows, except for HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button; close HijackThis!

2. Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

3. Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. A malicious site could render Java content under older, vulnerable versions of Sun's software if the user has not removed them. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Plattform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "English".
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click "Continue".
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u4-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Okay let's do some checks as well (two scanners didn't work):

4. Run the F-Secure Online Scanner
Note: This Scanner is for Internet Explorer Only!
Follow the Instruction here for installation.
Accept the License Agreement.
Once the ActiveX installs,Click Full System Scan
Once the download completes, the scan will begin automatically.
The scan will take some time to finish, so please be patient.
When the scan completes, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button.
Click the Show Report button and Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

5. Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts. If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not malicious.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt in your next reply. If you have any problems with the logs, both can be found in C:\Deckard\System Scanner.
6.

Computer Very Slow And Constantly Freezes..., ...everything takes twice as long to do...HELP?!

Check Help! My computer is slow! and/or Computer and browser slowness are not always malware related and please follow all the instructions given.

Please post DSS main/extra logs along with the F-Secure report and let me know of any complaints.

Even after all this cleaning my MS Word 2007 takes forever to load. At first I thought it was just because MS Office 2007 takes up a lot of space and memory, but Excel and PowerPoint are opening very fast so I have no idea why it's doing this. Any suggestions for that?

Other than that, everything seems to be fine. Thank you!

Hi Shia,

1. You have Sympatico Security Manager Anti-Virus v6.0.1 running along with Authentium Antivirus, which is not a good idea. Actually this is very dangerous, as multiple AV's can interfere with one another and actually allow MORE viruses to get through. It can cause system performance problems and a serious system slowdown as well. I strongly suggest you either (1) configure only one antivirus program to enable automatic realtime scanning, and leave the rest disabled most of the time, or (2) go to Start -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs and uninstall all but one antivirus program.

Note: Maybe better stick to Sympatico Security Manager Anti-Virus v6.0.1 since you have their firewall as well!!

2. Okay Azureus may be a legitimate version but take a look at these articles:

ID THIEVES' NEW HANGOUT: FILE-SHARING SOFTWARE and
Risks of File-Sharing Technology

and be warned. In short: it's up to you!!

3. Click on Start, Settings, Control Panel and double-click on Add or Remove Programs. From within Add or Remove Programs uninstall the following programs:

Azureus<< If you want to get rid of it!!
CiD Help
Radialpoint Security Services
RPS Ad Blocker
RPS AntiFraud
RPS AntiSpyware
RPS AntiVirus
RPS App Detector
RPS AsRealtime
RPS Backup
RPS Burn
RPS Diagnostic Utility
RPS Firewall
RPS ParentalControl
RPS Performance Tool
RPS PopupBlocker
RPS Privacy Manager
RPS RpsCore
RPS Security Cleanup
RPS Zip

4. Please reboot!!

Try a repair of Office. Run it, click the Office round button, click Options at the bottom, then Resources, then Diagnostics.

Furthermore, according to DSS Main log 92% of your Memory is in use. This doesn't help so maybe free some memory. Follow instructions in step 6 of my previous post for that.

Please post a fresh HijackThis log and let me know if all of this helped and how things are running now.

The thing is, I had never even heard of Authentium Antivirus until I read your post, and I can guarantee that I didn't install it knowingly. I looked it up on Add/Remove programs and I couldn't find it, so I went to the file location (C:\Program Files\Common Files\Authentium\AntiVirus) and tried to find an uninstall file but there was none. How do I get rid of this program? (Also, do I seem to have any other Antivirus software installed?)

Okay Azureus may be a legitimate version but take a look at these articles:

That's creepy! I barely use Azureus, so I removed it. Thanks for the heads up!

I can't find any of the above in my Add/Remove Programs list. Aren't the RPS files related to my Bell Sympatico Security suite though? (I got rid of Azureus and CiD Help.)

The diagnostic is currently running; I will let you know how that went when it's done.

I went through those links before posting my first HijackThis log, but will do so again and then post my next log.

Hi Shia,

1.

I figured out how to remove Authentium Antivirus, but it turns out that it's connected to my Sympatico Security Manager suite and so I had to reinstall it. Same deal with the Radialpoint and RPS programs - they all seem to be part of Sympatico and render it useless when deleted.

Okay, so let them be.

2.

I ran the diagnostic tool on MS Office and it came up with nothing but, strangely enough, Word is opening a bit faster now.

Sounds good. If it happens again ask around at the All other Applications Forum or use your friend Google.

3.

ran DSS twice - the first time the percentage was 76%, and the second time it didn't show a percentage (so I guess it was under 75%).

Yes it was under 75%, so not reported and that looks good as well.

4.

Just curious: Does it vary based on how many programs are open when the test is run?

Right again.

Furthermore HijackThis shows a clean log so I think you're almost ready to go.

5. Since the tools we used to scan the computer, as well as tools to delete files and folders, are no longer needed, they should be removed, as well as the folders created by these tools.

6. Remove previous restore points and set a new one to purge any malware that may have been backed up:

Click Start>Help and Support>Undo changes to your computer with System Restore
Click Create A Restore Point then click Next. Give it a name it and then click Create

Click Start>Run and type Cleanmgr
Click the More Options Tab.
Click Clean Up in the System Restore section.

This will remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.

7. In order to prevent future infections follow these recommendations:

a. Visit Windows Update on a regular basis to stay current with critical updates.

b. Install and run the following free programs:

* Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here!

* Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found
here! Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

* SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here!

* SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here!

* IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

Keep all these programs (including your anti-virus) up-to-date and run them regularly.
If you do not update regularly they will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

c. I recommend you to read Tony Klein's excellent article: So how did I get infected in the first place?
