I am trying to get my old Time XP Professional computer to function properly so my son can play games on it and not 'wreck' my new one. It will install games but then as soon as you try to play they freeze and messages like Direct Draw Initialization failed, unable to initialize graphics engine appear, although you are able to read manuals etc

Don't know if this has anything to do with the problem but when I look at device manager there is a conflict on Universal Bus Controller also when I turn the computer on it says new hardware is found Video Controller (VGA compatable) this also shows as a conflict under other devices. My other problem is that I can not find any service discs I received when I bought it.

As you will be able to tell I am not sure at all about operating systems and computer langauge and would appreciate any help in solving this problem.

Thank you

I'm sorry to hear it's a Time UK computer, model S35. It seems British companies, in general, have lousy support systems in place, but this company is terrible.
Check your Device Manager and expand all the +'s and check for any other yellow exclamation points to see what all problems you have.
Go to and download SIW . Run it and go to Devices and click on the +. Click on the + by Universal Serial Bus. Write down what's listed there and we can figure out what drivers we need to look for. Do the same for any other problem device that shows up in Device Manager

Hi

I've been on to SIW and under Universal Bus Controllers it stated: -

VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller
VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller
Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller
USB Root Hub
VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller

The list on the computer reads: -

Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller (This is where the conflict shows)
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller
VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller
VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller
VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller

Thank you for your help

Sorry I forgot to add the other conflict is under Other devices and there is no heading for that on SIW

The exclamation mark is on Video Controller (VGA compatable)

Thanks again

I would first update your VIA chipset drivers to the latest version available. This should take care of the conflicts in all but the Video.
Then I'd update your video drivers to the latest available version in order to fix the video conflict.

I'd try the VIA website for the chipset drivers (they're either called 4 in 1 or Hyperion as I recall). The video driver can be downloaded from the manufacturer of the video chipset. I'd suspect that the necessary info for locating that is available through SIW.
My browser caused a flood of traffic, sio my IP address was banned. Hope to fix it soon. Will get back to posting as soon as Im able.
