hello there.

I found something called gay-lesbian-photo.exe (it has hide next to the program name) in my msconfig startup area. I unchecked it and it doesn't seem to fireup when I reboot but I can't figure out how to remove it.

Below is my hijack this file -- thanks in advance!

Hi,

Go to start > all Programs > controlpanel > software and look if PornSoft is present there, or Gay-Lesbian-Photo and uninstall it.

Then navigate to the C:\Program Files folder and look if the Gay-Lesbian-Photo folder is present there and delete it (rightclick the Gay-Lesbian-Photo - folder and select "delete")

Let me know if that solved your issue.

No, sorry. I do not have this folder or program. The only place i've ever seen it is in my msconfig startup area. And it's not checked off like my other stuff (the ones I do want on startup) but strangely, it has the word 'hide' next to it. I'm attaching a screen shot if it will help. (i'll try to attach the image == it says it's in the 'manage current attachments area and I placed it here ) ==> Attached File  4bleep.png   23.62KB   14 downloads

Hi,

If you don't find this folder, then it's most probably already uninstalled/deleted previously.
But to be sure - and to check if something else is present there, do next please:

* Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

This includes installing the Windows XP Recovery Console in case you have not installed it yet.

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

[boot loader]
timeout=2
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons

Hi,

Please read the instructions again how to run Combofix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

You already installed the Recovery Console there, so please proceed with step 4 there.

I don't want to seem like a noodge, and please forgive me if I hosed this whole process up. But when I read step 4 it said:

ComboFix will now automatically install the Windows Recovery Console onto your computer, which will show up as a new option when booting up your computer. Do not select the Windows Recovery Console option when you start your computer unless requested to by a helper.

I didn't know I had to reboot the computer. Sorry If I wasn't supposed to but nothing was happening to the computer.

So.......... When I rebooted the computer I got an msconfig dialog box which said something like I ran the process before and wanted me to close it down, but in the background there was a DOS dialog box that had a process going on with it. When I said OK to the msconfig dialog box, it popped open the regular msconfig dialog box so I closed that down. Again, many apologies if I wasn't supposed to.

But when i closed down that app, the dos program stayed there for a bit and then gave me this log file:

Hi,

ComboFix will now automatically install the Windows Recovery Console onto your computer, which will show up as a new option when booting up your computer. Do not select the Windows Recovery Console option when you start your computer unless requested to by a helper.

I didn't know I had to reboot the computer. Sorry If I wasn't supposed to but nothing was happening to the computer.

The Recovery Console option is a great add-on, this in case if something bad happens to your computer and you won't be able to boot anymore. You won't see anything happening after you installed the Recovery Console. The only thing you'll see now is, when you startup your computer, that you'll see the option to use the Recovery Console now. That's all.
No need to use the Recovery Console, only use it when you cannot boot anymore. Read here what the Recovery Console is.

Yes, that's because you used msconfig before to disable startups. So, if you reboot, you'll get the message that something was modified in your system configuration.
There you should see a little checkbox which says "not to display this message anymore" (or something similar).

Anyway, the folder Gay-Lesbian-Photo is indeed gone. The only leftover is that reference in the Registry - in your msconfig

Let's delete the reference in msconfig + delete the msconfig startup, so you won't get the message anymore after reboot.

To do this...

Open notepad and copy and paste next present in the quotebox below in it:
(don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\pviever]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"MSConfig"=-

Save this as fix.reg Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
It should look like this: Posted Image
Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.
(In case you are unsure how to create a reg file, take a look here with screenshots.)

Then, * Go to start > run and copy and paste next command in the field:

ComboFix /u

Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /
Then hit enter.

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

Let me know if that solved your issue.

Yep! I think that fixed it. So If I can understand what happened, this folder and all bad files were already removed (maybe through an spyware/virusware tool?) but the program directory was still listed in the msconfig area and we cleaned all that up?

thanks again!

Yes, the files were already removed.. but there was a leftover in the registry still present, so we removed it as well.

Glad I could help
