Missing Operating System

hi, i have a question. my girlfriends sony laptop has just given me a error message..... missing operating system. how do i go about fixing this? can i do a system recovery? how would i go about doing this? hope someone can help, thank you.

What operating system was on the laptop before (Windows 98\ME etc), and do you have the CD for it?
