Hi, My homepage was taken over by spyware ( I think it was www.homepagecell.com - or something like that). I downloaded Spybot, Adaware, AVG antispyware and Windows defender. I ran all the scans in safe mode - they detected alot of things and then I selected the appropriate actions (either quarantine or delete). I then rebooted the computer, tried to do a scan in spybot but the computer I think was overloaded so I uninstalled windows defender. I then tried accessing the internet and found that the homepage had changed to about:blank and that I couln't access any websites. I then freaked and recovered everything that got deleted by AVG antispyware and Spybot and then I got internet access however the homepage changed back to the spyware product. I rebooted the computer again and I did a Spybot scan and this time I was able to successfully remove the entries that were found. When I clicked Fix selected problems Spybot immediately detected a couple of changes in the registery and so I allowed the change (assuming it was due to cleaning up the entries that were found). The homepage then changed again to about;blank however the good news is that I can this time go to other websites.

So currently I have the about: blank website although I don't know if the spyware will come back if I reboot the program and overtake the homepage again. I'm assuming I will have to run a couple of different antivirus scans - I do have trend micro Antivirus security Pro if this helps. I know that Adaware and AVG antispyware picked up different entries to spybot too but I don't know wether to run these in safe mode and risk no internet access again?? I would really appreciate the help.

Some of the entries I found were: Win32.BHO.Je / Win32.Renos / Zlob.Downloader.oid / Zlob.Downloader.vdt / Zlob.ImageActiveXobject / Downloader.Zlob.fqp

Hello Tyson_k,

Welcome to Bleeping Computer

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Thanks,

Hello,

You're welcome.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart anyway into normal Windows. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background. So only run it once!

Thanks,
tea

Hi, I have tried opening smitfraudfix.cmd in safe mode and it comes up with a message saying that dumphive.exe file missing! Unzip all the archive in a folder. I then restarted the computer into normal mode and opening the program and the same message appeared. I don't understand what has happended. Do you know what this might be?

Hi Tea,
Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. I have tried several times, deleting and downloading the file and the same message keeps appearing. I wouldn't have a clue what's wrong? I'm using trend micro security Pro, would this be impacting on anything? ( I don't see how this is affecting it since when I first used smitfraud, it worked just fine)

Don't fret.....we'll try another tool. There's more than one way to kill malware.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply please, along with a new HijackThis log.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Thanks
tea
Please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you.
Every little bit helps! :)
You can even use your credit card! Thank you!

Once again I apologise for not replying sooner. I appreciate the help.

I ran the combofix in the normal mode. Then when I did the Hijackthis log it came up with a message "For some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts File. If any hijacked domains are in this file, hijackThis may NOT be able to fix this. If that happens, you need to edit the file yourself. To do this, click Start, Run and type: notepad C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc\hosts and then press Enter. Find the line(s) HijackThis reports and delete them. Save the file as 'hosts.' (with quotes), and reboot." Whatever this means I'm not sure.

Here is the Hijack this Log

Hello,

This should take care of the Hosts problem :

Download the HostsXpert Here
http://www.funkytoad.com/download/HostsXpert.zip

Unzip HostsXpert to your desktop

Open up the HostsXpert program.

* Make sure that the "make hosts writable?" button in the upper left corner is enabled.
* Click back up Host files
* then click "Restore MS Hosts File"
* close program

Please be sure AVG AntiSpyware is fully updated, then please reboot your computer into Safe Mode by doing the following:
  • Reboot your computer.
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but just before the Windows icon appears, begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, reboot the computer and try again.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear.
  • Using the arrow keys on the keyboard, scroll to and select the "Safe Mode" menu item, and then press "Enter".
Please run HijackThis! and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries, if present:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {9034A523-D068-4BE8-A284-9DF278BE776E} - http://www.ietoolgate.com/redirect.php (file missing)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: IE Anti-Spyware - {9034A523-D068-4BE8-A284-9DF278BE776E} - http://www.ietoolgate.com/redirect.php (file missing)
O22 - SharedTaskScheduler: aposiopetic - {91316323-2ad5-4794-9589-52a2eaa60a68} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\shlahsd.dll (file missing)

Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis!, and click "Fix checked".

Then please run a scan with AVG Anti-Spyware:

IMPORTANT: Do NOT open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process.
  • Launch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab. Click on "Complete System Scan".
  • AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
  • Once the scan is complete do the following:
    • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select the "Apply all actions" button, AVG Anti-Spyware will then display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.
    • Next select the "Save Report" button at the bottom.
    • Then select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand corner of the screen and save it as a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important!).
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot your system normally into Windows. Please post the contents of the AVG Anti-Spyware report in your next reply, along with a new HijackThis log.
Your Java is way out of date, which leaves your computer vulnerable.

Updating Java
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u4.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
Thanks,
tea

Hi, sorry for taking so long to reply. Well the homepage has been changed from About:blank to one I want. The only problem I have been experiencing is the that I can't add or remove programs ( I tried to remove the old Java program but couldn't) because when I go to remove or install any program ( I tried downloading and installing latest version of itunes) I get a message that reads " The windows Installer service could not be accessed. This can occur if windows is in safe mode, or if the windows installer is not correctly installed. Contact your personnel for assistance."

Also, should I do any other scans with any other programs in safe mode or any other mode? Do I need to keep adaware if I keep spybot, or should I keep all the programs I have installed. Also a general question is, is it worth me to pay for Trend Micro Internet Security Pro when it couldn't fix this problem I encountered or should I save money and just download the free ware programs?

Thank you so much for all your help, I really appreciate it.

The reason I am wondering if I should do another scan with another program is because AVG antispyware didn't pick up any major threats??

Hello,

Let's try this first:

1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc in the Open text box, and then click OK.
2. In the Services (Local) list, right-click Windows Installer, and then click Properties.
3. If the Startup type drop-down list is set to a value of Disable, select the Manual option from the Startup type drop-down list, and then click OK.
4. Click the File menu, and then click Exit.

Let me know how it was set, and we'll go on to the next step if we need to.

Hi Tea,

Sorry for not getting back sooner, I have had trouble with accessing the internet but will be fine now. I've noticed that my internet connection is really slow too so I don't understand what has happened. I did what you told me to do and the option was already selected to manual.

Should I do another antivirus scan and also a spybot and adaware scan? I had to uninstall AVG antispyware cause my trial date time has run out. I don't know if I would be able to reinstall it anyway?? I'll try

You can if you like. And, AVG AntiSpyware would have been all right. The only thing you lose when the trial is up is the resident shield. You can update it manually and it will still scan and clean for you.
