I am helping a friend whose computer freezes on startup (normal and safe mode). A diaglog box says Bad Image .. The application or DLL C:\winnt\system32\wowfx.dll is not a valid Windows image. Need help desperately.

Not C:\WINDOWS\system32\wowfx.dll?
Anyway other way to boot? do you have an installation disk you can boot from?
Found this don't know if it will work...

wowfx.dll << this one is tricky to remove, run Windows in Safe mode, put a
Folder/File there with the same name to block it.

Unfortunately if you can't boot your PC there isn't really any way to fix it from the inside...
I'll keep lookin
