Hi - this is a topic you've helped someone else with recently. I've already created a specific folder for HJT. I've tried removing the GEBCD entry, but am assuming there are other associated files that re-create it. I am getting the entry point error when I tried to remove manually in CMD function. Many thanks in advance for your help.

Here is a copy of the log file:

Hello kevitzchi2008,

We will run ComboFix.

You need to disable your Symantec AntiVirus and Spybot Teatimer before running ComboFix, as they will prevent it from running.

I see you are running Teatimer.
I suggest you to disable it because it can interfere with the changes you'll make on your system.
If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.

How to disable TeaTimer during HijackThis Cleanup

To disable Norton Antivirus:
Please navigate to the system tray on the bottom right hand corner and look for a Posted Image sign.
  • right-click it -> chose "Disable Auto-Protect."
  • select a duration of 5 hours (this assures no interference with the cleanup of your pc)
  • click "Ok."
  • a popup will warn that protection will now be disabled and the sign will now look like this: Posted Image
You succesfully disabled the Norton Antivirus Guard.

Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

It is very important to install Recovery Console.

Post the ComboFix log.

Hi Mike

I'm running Symantec Corporate over a network, although each machine does have the program installed. There doesn't seem to be an icon for Symantec in the system tray. Is there any other way I can disable Auto-Protect? Also, do I need to run Combofix in Safe mode?

Many thanks.

Hi kevitzchi2008,

Is there any other way I can disable Auto-Protect?

Those instructions are for home computers. I have no experience disabling the Symantec Corporate version antivirus.
Sounds like this is a company computer. Ask your IT dept how you disable it.

Also, do I need to run Combofix in Safe mode?

No, do NOT run ComboFix in the Safe Mode. Please read the instructions in the web link.
It says say nothing running it in Safe Mode.
Make sure you install RECOVERY CONSOLE before running ComboFix.

Mike

I have followed your instructions and they would appear to have worked - many thanks!! I am still getting a Symantec 2718 internal error, but I see that there are other threads for this and that it will probably take a reinstall of Symantec to resolve this. Would you still like me to post a HJT or Combofix log?

Once again - thank you.
