I click on Start, shut down. Then in the Dialog Box I click on Shut Down.
The machine then tells me it is logging off, saving my settings, shutting down, but then it freezes.
Please help. Thanks.

Have a look at the items in the System Tray (right hand end of Taskbar) and turn them off manually one at a time then see if it shuts down. By trying the items one at a time it might be possible to identify the program which is causing a conflict.

If there are any other peculiarities with the machine operation (such as unexpected popups) consider posting a HiJack This log in the appropriate area of this site.
