I ran checkdisk with both options checked last night, and went to bed while it was running. When I looked this morning, there was just the desktop happily waiting for me. I looked for a checkdisk log file but can't find one anywhere, I suppose that's good news. Is there any record of what it found?

Yes, there is .

Open Event Viewer. Click the column titled Source to put all items in alphabetical order. Scroll down to the Winlogon items with Event ID 1001, double-click on the respective items.
