i downloaded a ".rar" file from a questionable website, stupidly i extracted one of the files to make sure it wasnt harmful (thinking that if it was a virus it would need all the other files)....

bottom line: im an idiot, and now in trouble....

It restarted my computer, and since then (yesterday) i cannot even access the "log-in" screen of vista... the screen turns black when the log-in screen should appear.... even when i try to start it in safe mode, the screen goes black.....

what can i do? i cant access dos, but if someone can get me there, would a system restore be useful/possible??

any help is greatly appreciated, thanks

The easiest fix at this point is to insert your Vista DVD and boot from it to repair your OS. That should let you get into Windows enough to try and remove the virus. Here's a link to the tutorial: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/repair-windows-with-windows-startup-repair/
My browser caused a flood of traffic, sio my IP address was banned. Hope to fix it soon. Will get back to posting as soon as Im able.
