I was recently working on a client's computer and have a problem that I haven't seen or dealt with before. I did some searches but can't seem to find any similar issues so maybe someone here has encountered it. According to the customer she was moving some pictures to be copied to a CD. She got a pop up asking if she'd like to install something to her desktop, (she can't remember what the "something" was). She clicked no but it apparently installed anyway and she suddenly had 1900 shortcuts on her desktop. That isn't a typo, 1900, which kinda made me chuckle. She deleted all the icons and restarted her machine but when she restarted some of them were back. This is where I get confused because it isn't a shortcut for a website, or some sort of adware, the icons that come back are just shortcuts to the original pictures she was working with. I have ran a full virus and spyware scans but found nothing. Any ideas?

First, I'd get a note of what that "something" was :whistling: She might have hit some accidental setting, though I'm not familiar with any setting that does that!

Long shot here.

Right click on the desktop, choose Properties/Desktop tab.

Customize Desktop/Web tab. I know, the icons are not web links, but this is worth a try.

Is Lock Desktop Items checked? If so, uncheck it. Click OK.

Delete the icons. If they reappear, there is definitely something strange going on.
Your dilemma has gotten my curiousity level set to high-let us know what the solution was if you find one.
