Multiple Kernel Overload? Need Help!

hello,

I recently downloaded the free AVG trial and ran a virus scan just to see if there was anything going wrong with the computer. I noticed there were 2 trojans on there that AVG did get rid of but it wasnt long before things took a turn for the worst. I was messing around with Media Center and decided I was going to download the games in the extras part from WildTangent. After downloading the driver and games I noticed my computer fans getting louder and louder and louder. I decided to open Tast Manager and noticed my CPU was running at a constant 100% and ever since then its been the same.

Everytime I open a new internet browser, it takes forever to load. Im talking 45 sec - 1 min. Not only that, its everything that I open that takes forever. Theres no processes in my task manager that are mysterious and I've ran the virus scan again (took 3 and a half hours) and it found nothing. I searched google and found something about WildTangent sometimes opens a port or something that allows someone to infect my computer with some kernel overload crap? I have no idea whats going on and my computer is running so slow it took me 30 min to search ur site on google, register, and get to this post page. I have since then deleted every WildTangent thing on my computer (even HJT and registry files) and still computer is messed up.

I seriously need some help, it sounds like my computer is going to blow up the fans are running so fast everytime I start a new program or click to another page on the internet. Oh, one more thing, Ive already tried System Restore about 5 different times and still nothing has changed from that. Didnt know if that would make any difference or not. But please get back to me as soon as possible as for this is driving me crazy. Thanks for the help!

Hello stunpals and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I do not see any signs of viruses or malware in the log. It is clean. There are a couple of items that should be addressed however.

First, it appears that there are multiple anti-virus applications running on this computer (Norton and AVG). Running more than 1 anti-virus application at the same time can cause file access and resource issues and if there is an infection the multiple programs can actually block each other from dealing with the infected file(s). I highly recommend that you choose which application you want to keep and uninstall the other one(s) to prevent these problems.

Second, the version of Java is extremely out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
Note: If there is an Update XX in the name then the "XX" in the version will be whatever the latest version is.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.0 Update XX (if present).
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_6_0_XX-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
If that does not resolve the issue then I would suggest posting in the XP forum. The HijackThis forum deals exclusively with virus and malware issues. HijackThis does not have the capability to analyze performance, hardware or application issues. For these types of issues I would suggest posting to the Windows XP Home and Professional forum.

The techs in that forum specialize in matters pertaining to the operating system, performance and applications. Let them know that you have been to this forum and that no malware was found.

When posting to any other forum, do not post a HijackThis log or the post will simply be moved back to this forum for infection analysis. That is what HijackThis is used for and that is what we specialize in here in this forum.

Also, when posting in any other forum for assistance, give as much detail as possible regarding any issues that are occurring. The more information they have, the better the techs can analyze the issue and make any recommendations for resolving it.

Hey thanks alot for the help. After I loaded the new java and restarted the computer, everything worked perfectly. I thought I had a more serious problem than i did! Thanks for the help again.

You are welcome stunpals, I am glad that we could help. In many cases where there is only a performance issue it turns out to be a configuration or outdated software. always a good idea to keep things up-to-date :thumbsup:
