I have a dell pc that started out with windows 98se and was then upgraded to xp. The pc has become cluttered and slow. Because I got a new computer with vista, I want to start fresh with the older pc. Specifically, I want to recover to windows 98se and then upgrade to xp and then update xp.

I have a dell resource disk but cannot get the computer to re-boot from the CD drvie that has the resource disk in it. I created a startup floppy but when I reboot with ti it simply takes me to msdos. I can get to the cd disk drive with the resouce cd by "cd cdrom" but I can't do anything from there. There's only one executable on it, "mscdex.exe," but can't execute it.

Can anyone help?

So you want to update 98 to xp....correct? You will need to go into the Bios (press the Deleate key at start up) and then change your boot order to 1: CD 2: hard drive. ect.
Then place the cd in the tray and reboot.

It's likely that your floppy boot diskettes don't load the CD-ROM driver, so it can't access the CD from the DOS mode that 98 uses to start the installation. Try this site for boot disks: http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

Some links with instructions:

I'd suggest formatting the hard drive and installing Windows XP. During the installation it will ask you to insert the qualifying media - at that point insert your Windows 98 CD and you'll be able to install XP without having to upgrade from 98 (and will save a few headaches that could be caused by the upgrade process).
