I'm not sue what your basic Windows Desktop Background screen is but, I think I would be talking about the Windows XP style;

I have a screen like this on my 4403, and it has the Compac logo on it, with the Four celestial rings two at the top and 2 large ones covering 2/3's of the screen.

This computer goes into what seems to be a standby mode, the fan is still at running speed, but left unattended, the screen takes on the XP style but there are no desktop icons on it and I can not snap it out of this mode without manually restarting.

Other times it does the same thing but the screen is dark as if it is in a true standby. Still I need to manually restart to get the desktop screen to boot. and or if I hit the space key it reverts back to the empty XP screen, after it jumps out of standby, and thats as far as it goes ?

Any ideas on what might be causing this. I already know that this machine has some problem questions in the area of PCI Device and SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio Device.

I would like to trouble shoot these for more information and am still checking.
