Hey guys, i bought a pretty nice dell xps computer from my freinds dad, but he had to take out the harddrive. I know the computer works cause i saw him use it a while back. Anyway, i bought a new barracuda 160gb internal harddrive and hooked it up to the IDE and power supply, set the jumper to master, went into bios and set the comp to boot from cd-rom(with windows xp home in it) aaaaaaaand......

i get either a blinking cursor or sometimes i get a "strike f1 to retry boot, f2 to enter setup"

im really frustrated what do i do! please help! i was told by my freind that you guys know everything

Black Screen (fixmbr) - http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;314503

Does the BIOS reflect the new drive, rather than the old one?

Hello mikebrudu and  to Bleeping Computer!

I am assumign that since you just got a new hard drive and are booting from the Windows XP CD, that you want to install Windows XP. If so, you need to press the F2 key to start the installation process.

Hamluis has a good point - is the new HDD shown in the BIOS?
