Hey chaps, I hope one (or some) of you can be of assistance.

My PC keeps on redirecting to some irritating adult site.

I've got Norton AntiVirus, Lavasoft Ad-Aware and Spybot Search & Destroy. None of these are doing anything about it. I've also got Windows XP's firewall activated.

I don't know if it's a virus or a trojan or whatever. It doesn't look like an infection (not that I'd know); it just redirects my browser. It doesn't happen when I go to sites that I've been to loads of times; but if I go to a site I've never visited before, it tends to redirect me.

I'm sure it's something really simple, but I'm CRAP with computers. If you help me, we can be bestest buddies for ever and ever and ever.

Cheers.

Hi Stu Walsh

It sounds like CWS

to what varient or if you have it we would need to see your Hijack this Log.

First, create a folder for HijackThis in the root folder of your hard drive so it can make proper backups

example

C:/HJT/hijackthis.exe
C:/hijackthis/hijackthis.exe

next

Click here to download Hijack This. Save it to the folder you have just created

Close all open windows and open HIJACK THIS. Click “Scan” . When the scan is finished (it only takes a second), the scan button will change to“Save Log”. Click on“Save Log” and save it to NotePad. Copy the entire log and paste it here.

DO NOT FIX ANYTHING YET , most items that appear in the log are harmless or even needed. Wait for someone to analyze the scan and advise.

If you have anything disabled by MSConfig or any other startup manager, please re-enable it before scanning to post

Thanks for your help, Lobos! I owe you a big apple pie and some wool.

Anyway, I did what you said, but NotePad wouldn't open for some reason. So I used Word instead. I hope that's OK.

This is what I got...

Wow! Thanks for all your effort in helping me, Lobos. I REALLY appreciate it.

I don't have time to do all that stuff tonight, but I'll definitely do it all tomorrow.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Well I've done everything you suggested Lobos, and it seemed OK for a while. But it's still redirecting to that site. The URL it redirects to is: www.hitpointer.com/ssredir/gb.html.

I'm getting some other problems as well.

Norton is finding a virus called 'trojan.ByteVerify', but it says 'Action Taken: Access to this file was denied'.

I'm also getting 'PurityScan' and 'PowerScan', which seem to be installing themselves onto the computer.

As well as this, I'm getting a dialogue box (I think that's what they're called anyway - a small gray box in the centre of the screen). It says 'Windows error service' in the bar across the top. Then in the box itself, there's a large red circle on teh left with a white X through it. The text says 'Windows detected Spyware on your computer. Download free Spyware Scanner & Remover.' If you click 'Cancel', it keeps coming up 5 or 6 times. If you click 'OK', it goes to this website: http://hop.clickbank.net/?files/programs .

Anyway, here's my Hijack This log...

Sorry, not sure if we are having notification problems here at the site so not sure if Lobos is going to get this so I will help.

You have a lot here. Please do these steps:

You are infected with a variant of the CoolWebSearch.

Download CWShredder from the below link and unzip it into a directory. Start CWShredder and click on the FIx button to have it remove all CWS infections it finds.

Download CWShredder from:

http://www.merijn.org/files/cwshredder.zip

or

http://tools.zerosrealm.com/CWShredder.zip

After you download the program, unzip it into a directory. Make sure all browser windows are closed and double click on the cwshredder.exe to start the program. When the program is loaded click on the "Check for Update" button, and if it finds an new version it will download it. You should then double click on cwshredder.exe again and click on the "FIX" button (not the "Scan only" button) and let it scan your computer.

To get the best results it is recommended that you run it in safe mode. Reboot windows and press F8 at boot/windows startup, usually right after the beep. Then select safe mode.

A tutorial that goes over this process step by step can be found here:

How to remove CoolWebSearch with CoolWeb Shredder

Once that is completed you should follow these steps in order to clean your computer of Malware which can include Viruses, Trojans, Worms, Spyware, Hijackers and Dialers

Step 1:
Download Spybot and Adaware from the following locations and install them. You should run both programs and clean up what it finds. This is to gaurantee that you find the most malware you can installed on your computer.

Before running the scans on both programs, it is mandatory that you update the programs. There are update options in each program when you run them.

Spybot

Ad-aware

If you would like to learn more about how to use these two programs with the proper settings you can read the tutorials below:

AD-AWARE - Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware/Hijackers from Your Computer.

SPYBOT SEARCH AND DESTROY - Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware from Your Computer.

When you scan with both programs, fix everything that it finds.

When you are done with the scan and fixing the items. Please continue with the next step.

Step 2:

It is important that you run Spybot and Adaware before you proceed with this step. Fixing enties with Hijackthis may leave behind unwanted files on your computer if the previous step was not done first.

Create a directory on your hardrive to save HijackThis.exe. A directory like c:\hijackthis. If you do not do this, you will not be able to use the backup/restore features.

Download HijackThis from:

HijackThis

Save this file into the directory you made previously and then run the program. Click on the Scan button and when it is finished click on the Save Log button. A Notepad window will open with the contents of this log. Click on Edit then click on Select all. Then click on Edit and then Click on Copy.

Create a reply to this post, and right click in message area and select paste to paste the log into the post.

Someone will reply to you after reading this post. DO NOT fix any entries unless you understand what you are doing.

To see a tutorial on using HijackThis you can click on the link below:
