For the past month or so I've been getting pop up ads, which was strange, since my computer was well protected against them. Further investigation led me to find that they were CiD pop ups. They come bundled as a sponsor program when downloading programs. I've also discovered that it came with msn messenger plus, and have since deleted the plus program. Though I deleted it, the pop ups remained. They make logging into the computer and just its general use very slow. They’re also painfully irritating.

I've gone through the preparation post and completed many of the steps. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the reply! Just as a security measure I went through the logs with find/replace and changed the surname, since this is a public place. Let me know if that makes a difference.
  • I went through my programs and I had none of those mentioned installed, so therefore none could be removed. I ran NoLop.exe, and that seemed to go smoothly, the log is below.

I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto-updating for the Viewpoint Manager -- the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.

To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad".
This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware.

I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. To uninstall the the Viewpoint components (Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player).

Also, you have install LimeWire, an unstrusted P2P software, I recommend you uninstall it. For more informations look HERE.

Uninstall the Messenger Plus with sponsor, and if you wish reinstall the program WITHOUT sponsor.

Click "start" on the taskbar and then click on the "Control Panel" icon.
Please doubleclick the "Add or Remove Programs" icon
A list of programs installed will be "populated" this may take a bit of time.
If they exist, uninstall the following by clicking on the following entries and selecting "remove":

Viewpoint
Viewpoint Manager
Viewpoint Media Player
LimeWire
Messenger Plus! 3

Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Click in Do a system scan only Place a check against each of the following:

Thanks again for the help.

I just have a couple of questions. One was about this step:

Please set your system to show All Files.
Click Start, open My Computer, select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.

I did it, but as I unchecked the boxes, my computer told me that some of the files once tampered with could stop the computer functioning properly, and that it was best if they were left hidden. So I'm wondering if now that it's done I should recheck them?

Also, to delete these:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\accdd.bak1 <--This file
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\accdd.bak2 <--This file

I put the file path into the address bar. When I did these for the two above files, I got this:

Hi

I did it, but as I unchecked the boxes, my computer told me that some of the files once tampered with could stop the computer functioning properly, and that it was best if they were left hidden.

Don't worry, just click Yes to confirm, after finished you recheck this options.

I put the file path into the address bar.

Don't do it. If you put the complete path on your address bar you will EXECUTE the file. Please, navigate to that path and delete those files (in safe mode).

After complete this step...

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
