Hello bigfatwallet and welcome to BleepingComputer!

Apollogies for the delay. The forum has been very busy lately. Bumping your topic is considered rude and actually works against you, as you are falling "off the ladder" within our tools and measures to keep track of open logs.

If you are still having problems please post a brand new HijackThis log as a reply to this topic. Before posting the log, please make sure you follow all the steps found in this topic: Preparation Guide For Use Before Posting A Hijackthis Log.

Please also post the problems you are having.

Thanks,

Johannes

Hey bigfatwallet,

It is important that you use a software firewall, to prevent unauthorised traffic both out of and into your computer.
Your log doesn't show a firewall running. If you have disabled it, please re-enable it.
If you do not have a firewall installed, please consider this free download for a firewall:If you do decide to install a third party firewall, make sure that the windows firewall is not running and if it is, deactivate it.

(At installing Zonealarm, please uncheck this option "include a ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker...". The Toolbar is not recommended... You can read more about it here.)

Should you decide to stay with the Vista Firewall, make sure you read these articles: "Protect your computer with Windows Vista Firewall" and "How to Create Exceptions in Windows Vista Firewall," to make sure you get the least protection necessary.

Personally, I would not suggest using the Windows internal firewall though.

Step #1

While Spybot's TeaTimer is normally a wonderful tool to protect against hijackers, it can also interfere with HijackThis fixes. So please disable TeaTimer by doing the following:
  • Run Spybot-S&D
  • Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
  • On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
  • Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
You can reenable TeaTimer once your system is clean.

Step #2

Run HijackThis, press Scan, and put a check mark next to all these entries:

Close all other windows and browsers, and press the Fix Checked button.

Step #3

Please download ComboFix from here and save it to your Desktop.

When done downloading, please print out and follow these instructions: "How to download and use ComboFix"
If you downloaded ComboFix previously, delete that version and download it again as the tool is frequently updated!
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.
  • When you have completed the ComboFix instructions, copy and paste the contents of C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
  • When done, be sure to re-enable your anti-virus and other security programs.

Do NOT use Combofix unless you have been instructed to do so by a Malware Removal Expert. It is a powerful tool intended by its creator to be used under the guidance and supervision of an expert, not for private use. Using this tool incorrectly could lead to disastrous problems with your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again. Please read Combofix's Disclaimer.

Step #4

Please post back with a fresh HijackThis log and the ComboFix log. Thanks.

Hey bigfatwallet,

...however when following the combofix instructions, I am a vista user but do not hae the Vista CD so am not sure how to continue with the Combofix scan.

I am not quite sure what makes you think you need the Vista CD to run this tool. Can you elaborate on your reasoning? You have a fairly nasty infection on your machine that would be tackled nicely with ComboFix and thus I would like you to try and run it again. If it is, because Vista is not mentioned there, than do not worry. This is because ComboFix will not run on 64bit Vista machines and thus technically does not support Vista in its totality.

Make sure you right-click and "run as administrator."

Step #1

I see you are still without a firewall! I know that firewalls can be a hassle for some games and other programs, but please consider for a second what is more annoying to you - the recurring task of having to clean up your machine of an infection due to lack of protection, or having to train your firewall once for future prevention of being infected again. Considering, that you might even have to change all your passwords in the worst-case scenario, I just personally think that the latter is the best option.

The Windows firewall is better than nothing, but doesn't monitor outgoing packets very well. A third party firewall will bug you with a lot of deny or allow questions for a while, but you should be able to tell it to remember your decision so after about a week or so you will rarely be asked for a decision. It's up to you, I just think you should really give it a try. For a bit more on the firewall thing, have a read here: http://www.us-cert.gov/cas/tips/ST04-004.html.

Therefore please reconsider installing Zonealarm or any other freeware / payware software firewall of your choice.

Step #2

The HijackThis fixes did not work, because Ad-aware was still running. Please navigate to this link and follow the instructions to deactivate Spybot S&D and Ad-aware: "How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall and Anti-malware Programmes"

Step #3

Run HijackThis, press Scan, and put a check mark next to all these entries:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSServer] rundll32.exe C:\Users\Michael\AppData\Local\Temp\jkhhh.dll,#1
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [cmds] rundll32.exe C:\Users\Michael\AppData\Local\Temp\jkkkj.dll,c

Close all other windows and browsers, and press the Fix Checked button.

Step #4

Please post back with the fresh HijackThis log and the ComboFix log. Thanks.

Thanks in advance for your help, much appreciated.

I have performed a system restore from 31st December and run a new Hijackthis log and also managed to run Combofix. I have not installed ad-aware or spybot yet but have installed zonealarm.

Hey bigfatwallet,

I had worked on a reply to you last night and wanted to complete it today, noticing that you edited your pst and changed the entire contents. When you do such things it would be great to post a quick reply to your last topic, informing me this way about it. This is the only way I get notification of your changes. I had to now rewrite my last response, causing a further delay.

Step #1

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. A malicious site could render Java content under older, vulnerable versions of Sun's software if the user has not removed them. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Plattform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "English".
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click "Continue".
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u4-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Step #2

Please download the OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    C:\Windows\system32\drivers\~GLH0014.TMP
  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste Standard List of Files/Folders to Move" window (under the light blue bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt2
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Step #3

Please go to Eset Onlinescan (NOD32)
(You need to use InternetExplorer or enable IEView in Firefox)
  • You will then see the Terms of Use, tick the check-box infront of YES, I accept the Terms of Use
  • Now click Start
  • Should you face a Security Warning that asks if you want to install and run a file called "OnlineScanner.cab", click Yes
  • Click Start (the Onlinescanner will now prepare itself for running on your pc)
  • To do a full-scan, tick: "Remove found threats" and "Scan potentially unwanted applications"
  • Press Scan
  • The Onlinescan will now start and scan your pc (this could take a while)
  • When the scan has finished, it will show a screen with two tabs "overview" and "details" and the option to get information or buy software, just close the window
  • Click Start >> Run... >> type: C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  • The Scanresults will now open in Notepad
    • Click into the text area, right-click and chose "select all" (or use ctrl+a)
    • Right-click again and chose "copy" (or ctrl+c)
    • Close Notepad
  • Navigate to this thread and post your log along with anything else requested from us, by right-clicking and "paste" (or ctrl+v) in the text area of the reply post you just created.
Note for Vista Users: Eset is compatible but Internet Explorer must be run as Administrator. To do this, right-click on the IE icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select "Run as Administrator" from the context menu.)

Step #4

Please post back with the log from the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, the log from the Onlinescan (C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt) and a fresh HijackThis log. Thanks

Hey Bigfatwallet,

No problem. We will use another Onlinescanner.

Step #1

Run HijackThis, press Scan, and put a check mark next to all these entries:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O9 - Extra button: eBay - {C08CAF1D-C0A3-40D5-9970-06D067EAC017} - http://www.webtip.ch/cgi-bin/toshiba/tracker_url.pl?EN (file missing)
O23 - Service: Symantec Lic NetConnect service (CLTNetCnService) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSvcHst.exe (file missing)

Close all other windows and browsers, and press the Fix Checked button.

Step #2

If you are having problems running the F-Secure Onlinescan, please try to run their Beta Version
(You need to use InternetExplorer or enable IEView in Firefox)
  • Follow the Instruction here for installation.
  • Accept the License Agreement.
  • Once the ActiveX installs,Click Full System Scan
  • Once the download completes, the scan will begin automatically.
  • The scan will take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan completes, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button.
  • Click the Show Report button and Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Step #3

Please post back with a fresh HijackThis log and the F-Secure report. Thanks.
