You are reporting one problem after another in over a dozen different threads on this forum started since the first of January.

IMO its time for you to perform a "Repair install" or "Clean Install Windows XP".

From Microsoft:
"Code 10
If the device has a "FailReasonString" value in its hardware key, that string is displayed as the error message. The driver or enumerator places this registry string value there. If there is no "FailReasonString" in the hardware key, the following generic error message is displayed:
This device is either not present, not working properly, or does not have all the drivers installed. (Code 10)
Try upgrading the device drivers for this device.

1. Dial up connects but Dialup screen box does not function to dial up consecutively without re-starting, get carpserve errors on each dialup.

2. Goes into Standby and must restart to bring out.

3, SoundMAX, can not start, info from Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Properties> Volume> No Audio Device

Device Managers = SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio > Exclamation Mark !

Systems Information> Problem Device> Soundmax Can not start (Error Code 10)

4. Monitor Screen has adopted a non- screen appearance sort of like when a TV, use to go off in the wee hours, but
motionless and with some color.

Concerning sound, . . what about the Windows default sound, . . where is it ? I used to be able to double click the little sound icon in the notification window nest to the time clock and then it would allow me to test the sound.

I have searched Internet all night and have not found anything that I can understand, . . I searched BC Audio forum and there are quite a few sound problems but I have not found one that states a No Audio device Problem.

I installed SP2 and have no sound This computer uses Sound Max this can not play, (Error 10),
I am asuming it is because I have No Audio Device.

Why do I have SoundMAX what happened to my Windows sound system where there use to be a little speaker icon at the notification window that you could double click and it let you test your sound ?

All I want is an Audio Device ?

How can I get one ? for this Compaq 4300, I have also searched Compaq for, "No Audio Device", Nada.

You don't have an audio device because the sound driver for the sound chip is either corrupt or not there. Therefore the computer does not see anything

Is there a chance that I can re-install Windows XP Service Pack 2 over top of the Previous install, and possibly, re-install missing devices and or drivers ?

Can you tell me what this will do to prior installation if so ?

That D/L did not work, sorry to say, . . Does my computer have a Smart Card ?

It appears that ir does, and it apparently is manual and was not on.

From; Services.MSC

Smart Card Description;
Manages access to smart cards read by this computer. If this service is stopped. this computer will be unable to read smart cards. If this service is disabled. any service that explicitly depends on it will fail to start.

I found this and started it, but at this time am not sure if it is related to problem.

All the drivers for SoundMAX seem to be in place and working.

Please provide your advice on Smart Card and any other cards that may be pertinent , not working, or disabled.

Hey Good Buddy, How goes it !

In respect to your answer I can only agree with you but, I have found there is a little more to it than just D/Ling the Compaq driver(s), possibly more on this later.

However I would like your take on this, which I have found in S. Info. as I am not sure how this stps and starts and what the relationship with the No Device and Error (Code 10) problem ?

Name...............wdmaud
Description..............Microsoft WINMM WDM Audio Compatibility Driver
Version ...............5.1.2600.2180
Type..................Kernel Driver
Status...............Stopped
Start................Demand Start
Path..........C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\wdmaud.sys
File Description.......... MMSYSTEM Wave/Midi API mapper / Microsoft® Windows® Operating System

Also; Just now found this;

Name.........kmixer
Description...........Microsoft Kernel Wave Audio Mixer
Version................5.1.2600.2180
Type...........Kernel Driver
Status...........Stopped
Start.............Demand Start
Path..........C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\kmixer.sys
File Description............Kernel Mode Audio Mixer / Microsoft® Windows® Operating System

I did not find it in W. Services. Nor has this recent SP2 been updated via W.update as I have not gone on-line yet.

Appreciate your advice.
