Hi everybody,

Here is the issue I am having. When i boot up in the morning my computer starts with showing the new hardware wizard. My computer is not registering my wireless network. I restart my computer about 4 to 5 times and then it recognizes it. Then I will put a search in either Yahoo or Google and when I click on a link it will redirect me to another page not the page for the link. I do notice that it will say finefinder when it is redirecting. I do have AVG , Spyware Terminator, A-squared Free, and Registry mechanic. So I ran all of those and still have the problems.

Any help will be appreciate.

Hi Bashebabutt

Step 1
Please download FixWareout from one of these mirrors:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
If your firewall gives an alert, (because this tool will download an additional file from the internet), please don't let your firewall block it..... allow it instead.
Then you will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
Once the desktop loads please post the text that will open (report.txt) in your next reply.

Step 2
The following entry, shows that the Microsoft System Configuration Utility
is in use, and indicates you are using a Selective startup:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSConfig] C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe /auto

We need to see all that is loading on that computer!!

Please launch Notepad, (Start > Run, type in: notepad)
Copy/paste the text within the code box into the notepad document.:

regedit /e show1.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg"
regedit /e show2.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupfolder"
type show1.txt >> startup.txt
type show2.txt >> startup.txt
del show*.txt
start notepad startup.txt
In Notepad, go to File (upper menu bar), and select: Save as
In the Save as prompt:
Save in: Desktop
File Name: show.bat
Save as Type: All files
Click: Save
Exit out of Notepad.
Now from the 'Desktop', double click on show.bat and post the results in your next reply.

In your next reply,please post:
Report.txt from Fixwareout.
Show.bat results
and a new Hjt log.

Thanks

Hi Bashebabutt

Things are looking better now, how are things running?

Step 1
There's a few small things we have to address though.
From the 'Show.bat' report. i see that you have Spyware Bot installed.
This program is on the Rogue Anti-Spyware List
It is a corrupt anti-spyware program that uses false positives.
Please uninstall this program from your 'add or remove'.

Your log is also showing a couple of entries for 'Symantec updater'.
Did you have 'Norton' installed at one time?
If you have uninstalled it, it may not have removed all the entries.
You may need to run the Norton Removal Tool to completely remove it from your system.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. A malicious site could render Java content under older, vulnerable versions of Sun's software if the user has not removed them. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u4...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u4-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Step 2
I can't see any evidance in your log of a 'Software' Firewall.
You may be using the 'Windows Firewall'.
The Windows XP firewall protects against port scanning but has limitations and it is no replacement for a robust 3rd-party two-way personal firewall.
Here's some suggestions for a good 'free'3rd party firewall:
Zone Alarm
Online Armor free
Comodo
I really recommend that you install a 'software' firewall as soon as possible.

Step 3
To help with the cleaning process:
Download SUPERAntiSypware Free for Home Users
  • Double-click SUPERAntiSypware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
  • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
  • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here.)
  • Under "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences button.
  • Click the Scanning Control tab.
  • Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked)
:
  • Close browsers before scanning.
  • Scan for tracking cookies.
  • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
[*]Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.
Now close down SuperAntiSpyware.
Do Not do a scan yet.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

* Restart your computer
* After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
* Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
* Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, (you will have to use the 'arrow' keys to navigate on this window) then press "Enter".
* Choose your usual account.

Scan with SuperAntiSpyware
Click the desktop icon.......when it starts, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
  • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
  • Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".
  • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
  • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
  • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
  • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
  • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
  • Click Close to exit the program.
In your next reply,please post:
The SAS scan results
and a new Hjt log.
Also please let me know how things are running now.

Thanks.

Hi Starbuck,

I ran the SAS in safemode and it did not save the log. But there was only one threat detected in files..it was the adware tracking cookie.

This morning before I ran the SAS and added ZoneAlarm, the only problem was restarting my computer 3 or 4 times since the add new hardware prompt came up...still did not recognize my wireless. After the 4th time restarting it recognized it.

Starbuck I did forget to tell you that I cannot remove the Spywarebot it is not in the Add/Remove.

I did a search for files, with hidden files as well, and found 23 files...

Can I delete manually?? I wont do anything til you tell me so that last hijack is valid.

Hi Bashebabutt

I ran the SAS in safemode and it did not save the log.

If it only found a tracking cookie that's ok, but if the report is there..... it would be just as well to double check it.
Did you try this..........
# To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
# Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
# Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
# If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
# Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
# Click Close to exit the program.

I cannot remove the Spywarebot it is not in the Add/Remove.

I see that you have 'A Squared' on your system. This will detect 'SpywareBot'.
see here: http://www.emsisoft.com/en/malware/?Adware.Win32.SpywareBot
Maybe 'A Squared' has removed part of it , but not all.
Try this:
Click Start.... My Computer.....'C'drive..... Program Files.... SpywareBot
and see if the uninstaller is in there....unins000.exe
If so, double click on this and run the uninstaller from the folder.
If for some reason it won't let you run it..... try again in Safe Mode.
We'll try this before removing the files manually.

the add new hardware prompt came up...still did not recognize my wireless. After the 4th time restarting it recognized it.

How are you connecting to the Wireless router?
Is it by 'Wireless USB Adapter?
If so..have you tried reinstalling the drivers from the disc to see if this cures the problem?

Your HJT log is showing no signs of malware but we can run a different type of scan just to make sure.
This program won't remove anything but will give a good insight into your system.
Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.

1. Close all applications and windows.
2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
3. When the scan is complete, it will create two text files - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized on your Taskbar.
4. Copy/paste both logs back here please (they will also be located at C:\Deckard\System Scanner).

Make sure you notice the extra.txt second log that will show as minimized on your Task Bar, "Maximize" that and be sure to paste those contents here as well.

In your next reply just answer the questions and let me have the DSS scan reports (both of them)

Thanks.

Starbuck I could not find unins000.exe in program files...there was not even a SpywareBot file.

I did however find the scan log...went back to safe mode and it was there but it was not there on normal boot. I did a search for logs and saved it to my desktop.

I will find my disk for my Belkin wireless USB adapter and reinstall, since I had to restart 4x again. But everything else is running great!!!!

Should I do anything about my startup??

Hi Bashebabutt

Thanks for finding that SAS report. At least we have confirmed there was no malware found.
Just a few items to clean up now.

Step 1
Open Notepad and copy and paste the following quotebox into a new text document. (Don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4!)
REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\SpywareBot]
Save this as fix.reg Choose to save as all files and save it to your Desktop.
From the desktop, double-click on fix.reg and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click Yes/OK.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

* Restart your computer
* After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
* Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
* Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, (you will have to use the 'arrow' keys to navigate on this window) then press "Enter".
* Choose your usual account.

Step 2

there was not even a SpywareBot file.

Ok, let's try the other path line it uses.
As you had said:

I did a search for files, with hidden files as well, and found 23 files..

They must be somewhere.
Navigate to the folder in bold and if there.... right click on it and select 'delete'.
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\SpywareBot
If this is not there, do a search and delete anything to do with 'SpywareBot'.

Reboot back into normal mode when finished.

Step 3
There's a file on your system that i'd like you to check for me.

Make sure that you can see hidden files.
  • Click Start.
  • Click My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Click OK.
Then please go to Jotti

When the jotti page has finished loading, click the Browse button and navigate to the following file and click Submit.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\FAABA1176D.sys

Please post back the results of the scan in your next post.

If Jotti is busy, try the same at Virustotal: http://www.virustotal.com/

Step 4
The DSS scan is showing that there may be a missing 'Run' path with Registry Mechanic. This should only affect the program if you actually wanted it as a 'start up' item.
Which at present it's not. You should still be able to run it manually.

Should I do anything about my startup??

Do you mean the problem you are having with connecting to your wireless router?
I can't see anything of a malware nature that could be causing this, have you tried reinstalling the drivers for the USB adapter yet?

Let me know how these things go and please post back the Jotti result and another hjt log.
Thanks.

Sorry Starbuck I meant my msconfig startup. I do have selective startup and did not know if I needed to change this.

Hi Bashebabutt

Step 2
The following entry, shows that the Microsoft System Configuration Utility
is in use, and indicates you are using a Selective startup:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSConfig] C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe /auto

Hi Bashebabutt

I removed all SpywareBot.

That's great, well done.

The file i asked you to submit, came back clean so we can forget that.

Sorry Starbuck I meant my msconfig startup. I do have selective startup and did not know if I needed to change this.

msconfig should really be used as a diagnostic tool. You shouldn't really use it to stop 'start up' items permenantly.... this creates a 'selective start up' as you have seen.
If you want to go back to a 'normal start up', it's best to stop these items using a 'Start up Manager'.
Personally use the Start up Manager that is built into 'Spybot Search & Destroy'.
There are no malware items that you have stopped, so if you want to go back to a normal start up... i can explain how to do this.
If you want to use 'Spybot' for this... There's a tutorial that explains how to download and run it at:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/using-spybot-to-remove-spyware/

Once you have it on your system:
Click... start.. run and type in msconfig then click ok.
On the next screen, click on the Start up tab and click on enable all. then click apply.
Now click the General tab at the top and tick Normal startup and click apply and ok
You will now have to restart your system.

Don't forget that you will now have a lot of start up entries, so your system maybe a bit slower to start with.
Open Spybot Search & Destroy
Then click on the Mode... then on the Advanced tab ( at the warning screen, click YES)
Now click on the Tools button
Then System Startup
Untick any items that you don't want. (if you make a list before hand, it'll be easier to do)

Now close Spybot Search & Destroy and restart your computer.
If you need to restart any programs, just go back and put a tick against the ones you want to restart... and reboot.

If you still have connections problems after reinstalling the USB drivers, i'd suggest asking about this in the Networking forum
They will be able to help you a lot more than i can.

Everything looks good now.

Remove Tools
We'll remove the tools you downloaded, these are always being updated and you won't need them now.
Please delete the desktop icons for:
DSS
Fixwareout

Then navigate to these folders and remove them as well.
C:\Deckard
c:\fixwareout

Let's hide those hidden files/folders again now.
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select Tools menu
  • Click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Uncheck Show hidden files and foldersin the Hidden files and folders section.
  • Select Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Check the Hide file extensions for known file types option.
  • Click Yes.
  • Click OK.
Now you should Set a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore. Since System Restore is a protected directory, your tools can not access it to delete these bad files which sometimes can reinfect your system. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is:
  • Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
  • Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
  • Then go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
  • Click "OK".
  • Click the "More Options" Tab.
  • Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
  • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
  • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
  • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy. You should also scan your computer with this program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Glad I was able to help.
