I would first check the Reliability Monitor and Event Viewer for errors relating to this issue.
Go to Start and type in "reliability" (without the quotes) and press Enter. In the left hand pane of the next window, click on Reliability Monitor and view the errors/warnings/information in the right hand pane.
For Event Viewer, go to Start and type in "eventvwr.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter. In the left hand pane of the next window, expand the Windows Logs and then click on System and Application to view the log entries there. Scroll down to the time when the backup was running and see what it says. Then let us know and we'll work from there.
