Hi,

My AVG Free Edition tells me that I'm infected with Win32/NSanti. AVG doesn't allow me to heal it, but only to move the infected file to the vault (which I do always). However, the next time I turn on the computer, the virus alert shows up again, which I guess it means that I'm still infected.

The virus always appear to be in a file called "rkd.dll" (without quotation marks) and always in any of the following locations:

-C:\DOCUME~1\Kike\LOCALS~1\Temp\rkd.dll
-C:\Documents and Settings\Kike\Local Settings\Temp\rkd.dll

Since my PC got infected, it seems like the virus doesn't allow me to see my hidden and system files, even though I try to mark/unmark the correspondent options in the "Folder Options" menu.

I ran the last version and updates of these malware removers, both in safe and normal mode in Windows, in the following order:

a ) AVG Anti-Spyware Free Edition
b ) SpyBot Search and Destroy
c ) CCleaner
d ) RegSeeker
e ) AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition
f ) Ewido Anti-Spyware Online Scanner (this one only in normal mode)

After running all of them, I'm sill having the virus.

Here's my HJT log. Please, I beg your help to eliminate this virus.

Welcome to the BleepingComputer HijackThis Logs and Analysis forum Kike G.
My name is Richie and i'll be helping you to fix your problems.

You have a Backdoor Trojan present on your pc.
A Backdoor is a software program that gives an attacker unauthorized access to a machine and the means for remotely controlling the machine without the user's knowledge. A Backdoor compromises system integrity by making changes to the system that allow it to by used by the attacker for malicious purposes unknown to the user.

They are typically installed without user interaction through security exploits, and may allow an attacker to remotely control the infected machine. Such risks may allow the attacker to install additional malware and use the compromised machine to participate in denial of service attacks, spamming, and bot nets, or to transmit sensitive data to a remote server. The malware may be cloaked and not visible to the user. These risks severely compromise the system by lowering security settings, installing 'backdoors,' infecting system files, or spreading to other networked machines.

If your computer was used for online banking or has credit card information on it, all passwords should be changed immediately to include those used for email, eBay and forums.
You should consider them to be compromised.
They should be changed by using a different computer and not the infected one,if not an attacker may get the new passwords and transaction information. Banking and credit card institutions should be notified of the possible security breech.

Since your computer was compromised read:

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall:

Let me know how you wish to proceed in your next reply.

Hi, Richie:

Thanks for answering me and for taking the case.

I read the pages that you recommended me. I read them carefully and looked up for my virus description both in the encyclopedias that you quote and in Google. After this research, I've decided NOT to format my computer. Here are my reasons:
  • I don't have sensible information in my computer.
  • I do have a XLS file with my user names and passwords for several sites; however, it doesn't contain passwords fully written, but only one letter, so I can remember the full password. Nobody could ever steal any of my passwords from it.
  • I did entered my bank account since I got infected; however, my bank uses a sophisticated security engine for my password: It makes my dial my password in a virtual number pad using the mouse pointer and not typing directly the numbers using my keyboard. Also, those numbers in that virtual pad change positions every time the page is loaded.
  • It's true that my web browser keeps my login names and passwords in it. Anyway, it's just e-mail and stuff like that. They are not sensible passwords. However, I think I can manage the risk by changing my passwords once my computer gets clean or from another machine.
  • Finally, it's true that finding information about Win32/NSanti is hard. However, I found information in this site that tells me that my virus isn't that harmful. (Regretfully, information is in Spanish). (However, to be fully honest, I see that my virus doesn't behave as exactly as this Spanish encyclopedia describes...).
Anyway, I decided to take the risk. Please, I would appreciate it very much if you tell me how to remove the virus from my system.

Thanks a lot.

If you have previously downloaded ComboFix,please delete that version now.
Warning
You should NOT use Combofix unless you have been instructed to do so by a Malware Removal Expert.
It is intended by its creator to be used under the guidance and supervision of an expert, not for private use.
Using this tool incorrectly could render your system/pc inoperable.

Now download Combofix by sUBs and save to your desktop:
Note
It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop

Close any open browsers.
Double click on combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's finished it will produce a log.
Post the entire contents of C:\ComboFix.txt into your next reply.
Note
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running.
That may cause the program to freeze/hang.

Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt unless I ask.
Note
In case your Antivirus or any other realtime scanner is displaying an alert after you downloaded Combofix or while you use Combofix, please disable your scanner and redownload Combofix again.
Some scanners may see some combofix related components as suspicious and block or delete them while there's nothing wrong with them.

Also post a new Hijackthis log please.

Hi, Richie,

Thanks for the detailed instructions. I downloaded and ran what you told me and these are the logs. Funny thing: after running ComboFix, my default web browser is now Internet Explorer, which I don't use anymore. I've changed it back to my preferred browser.

Another funny thing: as you told me, in order to download and run ComboFix properly (and as I'm tired of them, for I have little amount of RAM and having them running in resident memory slows down my machine), I unistalled AVG Free Anti-Spyware, SpywareBlaster and SpyBot. After rebooting, the AVG Free Edition Anti-Virus Resident Shield window that used to tell me that my virus was detected didn't appear. I then tried to access the C hard drive: because of the virus, whenever I did it, it immediately appeared the little "You're infected" window, but this time it didn't appeared. I don't get it!!

Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune:
http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1
Do not run it just yet.

Download\install 'SuperAntiSpyware Home Edition Free Version' from here:
http://www.superantispyware.com/downloadfi...ANTISPYWAREFREE

Launch SuperAntiSpyware and click on 'Check for updates'.
Once the updates have been installed, exit SuperAntiSpyware.
Do not run it just yet.

Have Hijack This fix the following by placing a check in the appropriate boxes and selecting 'Fix checked'.
Make sure all browser and all Windows Explorer windows are closed before fixing:
O20 - Winlogon Notify: ACNotify - ACNotify.dll (file missing)
Exit Hijackthis.

Now double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click 'Select All' found at the bottom of the list.
Click the 'Empty Selected' button.

If you use Firefox browser, do this also:
Click Firefox at the top and choose 'Select All' from the list.

Superantispyware will now scan your computer, when it's finished it will list all/any infections found.
Make sure everything found has a checkmark next to it,then press 'Next'.
Click on 'Finish' when you've done.

It's possible that the program will ask you to reboot in order to delete some files.

Obtain the SuperAntiSpyware log as follows:
Click on 'Preferences'.

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
• The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
• Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT

• Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
• Standard
• Scan Options:
• Scan Archives
• Scan Mail Bases
• Click OK

Hi, Richie,

I did it all as you said:
  • I fixed the entry that you pointed with HijackThis.
  • I ran ATF Cleaner.exe and cleaned everything (by the way, Firefox did not delete my user names and passwords although I told ATF to do so).
  • I scanned my PC with SuperAntiSpyware and generated a report.
  • I ran Kaspersky online scan and generated a report.
  • I scanned my PC with HijackThis once again and generated a report.
Then you asked me how my PC was doing. Let me state something before: since the beginning of the infection with this virus, these have been the symptoms that my PC experimented:
  • Impossibility to see hidden and system files even though I mark/unmark correspondent options in the Explorer window.
  • When turning on my PC or rebooting, it appears the AVG Free Edition Resident Shield window that announces my infection (with the only possibility to send the infected file to quarantine, but not to heal it).
  • Whenever double-clicking on a drive unit (HDD or USB removable drive), it always appears the AVG Free Edition Resident Shield window announcing that I'm infected (with the only possibility to send the infected file to quarantine, but not to heal it).
So after following the steps that you recommended me, things were like this:
  • Symptom 1 is still present.
  • Symptom 2 is gone.
  • Symptom 3 behaved like this: When I clicked on my C hard drive, it didn't appeared any "You're infected" window. But then I accessed the USB removable drive that brought the infection to my PC (although I formatted it a couple of days after the infection... well, actually I formatted it using the infected machine)... Well, as I was saying, when I accessed the USB removable drive, it appeared again the "You're infected" window, telling me that the virus was still there and that the infected file was in the path that I copied in my first post. (Actually, I formatted my USB data traveler again, and when I double-clicked on it, it appeared the "You're infected" window again).
The Hijack This log that I'm posting here was created after testing my USB removable drive.

So here are the three logs that you asked for: SuperAntiSpyware, Kaspersky and HijackThis.

Please download OTMoveIt by OldTimer, save it to your desktop:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTMoveIt2.exe
Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run it.
Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose 'Copy'):

C:\u.bat

Return to OTMoveIt, right click on the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be moved" window and choose Paste.
Click the red Moveit! button Posted Image
Copy everything on the 'Results' window to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose 'Copy'), and paste it into your next reply.
Close OTMoveIt.
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process.
If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Clear your 'System Restore' points by doing the following:
Right-click on 'My Computer' and select 'Properties'.
Select 'System Restore'.
Select 'Turn Off System Restore On All Drives'.
Select 'Apply'.
You will then get the following warning:
"You have chosen to turn off System Restore.
If you continue, all existing restore points will be deleted, and you will not be able to track or undo changes to your computer.
Do you want to turn off System Restore?".
Then select 'Yes',your 'System Restore' directories will be purged.

Restart your pc.

Turn 'System Restore' back on:

Right click on 'My Computer' and select 'Properties'.
Select 'System Restore'.
Unselect 'Turn Off System Restore On All Drives'.
Select 'Apply',then click 'Ok'.

Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe again to run it.
Click on the 'Cleanup' button Posted Image
When you do this a text file named cleanup.txt will be downloaded from the internet.
If you get a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTMoveIt attempting to contact the internet you should allow it to do so.
When the 'Confirm' box appears click 'Yes'.
Restart your pc when prompted.

Click on Start/Run,copy and paste ComboFix /u into the 'Open:' space, then press Ok.
This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

Restart your pc.
Also post a new Hijackthis log,let me know how your pc is running now.

Hi, Richie,

Following your instructions, I did as you said. You asked me how my PC is running now. Well, I have some problems now:
  • My address book (wab.exe) doesn't open anymore.
  • Microsoft Office Picture Manager is not my default picture editing default software anymore (I already fixed this by myself).
  • Microsoft Office InfoPath doesn't work anymore (it appears a dialog box that says I don't have some file).
About my virus, this is what is happening:
  • I still can't see my hidden and system files although I mark and unmark the correspondent options in the "view" tab in the "Folders optios" menu in Explorer.
  • When I double-click on drive C (HDD) in My PC screen, the infection warning doesn't appear.
Here's a question: I would like to test if whenever accessing my USB data traveler the virus warning shows up again (it always happened and is a symptom of the virus Win32/NSanti). But I don't know if it is infected or not. How can I be sure that my USB data traveler is not infected? It brought the virus to my computer, but then I formatted it (the USB data traveler). However, I formatted it using the infected computer. Is my USB device infected? Should I format it using another computer? If so, how can I prevent the new computer for getting infected knowing that this virus copies itself to another computer using the "Autoplay" file?

Here are the logs that you asked for:

Please run F-Secure Online Virus Scanner using Internet Explorer:
http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols.shtml
In the opening page read:
1.General
2.System requirements
3.Start your scan, then click on 'Start scanning'.
The 'Internet Explorer-Security Warning' box will pop up,click on 'Install'
Read the Licence Agreement, then click on 'Accept'.
In the next window that opens click on 'Custom Scan'.
Under 'Virus Scan Options',make sure 'Scan whole system' is selected.
Under 'Other Scan Options',make sure the following are selected:
'Scan all files'
'Scan whole system for rootkits'
'Scan whole system for spyware'
'Scan inside archives'
'Use advanced heuristics'
Then click on 'Start'.
The 'scanner components and databases' will then be downloaded, this will take some time.
The virus scan will then start automatically.
The scan will take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan completes, click the ‘I want to decide item by item’ button.
For each item found,Select ‘Disinfect’ and click ‘Next’.
Click the ‘Show Report’ button, then copy and paste the entire report into your next reply.

Download Combofix by sUBs and save to your desktop:

Hi, Richie,

I read your last post, in which you ask me to scan my system with F-Secure Online Virus Scanner. I'm on it. Yesterday I scanned the system with F-Secure Online, but it took so long, that the next morning (today) scan was still running. It happened that my antivirus (AVG Free Edition) started its daily automatic scan at 8:00 a. m., when F-Secure was running! Just in the precise moment that AVG found my virus and moved it vault---as it always does---, F-Secure was scanning the vault... so it (F-Secure) freezed. Tonight I'll disable AVG automatic scan and try to complete F-Secure scan (I don't have broad band Internet, so I must wait till night to use my dial-up connection).

But before that I would like to ask you something. My computer is getting weird each day. For example, I noted that the following issues appeared in the las couple of days:
  • AVG Free Edition sometimes finds "rkd.dll" infected file (and moves it to vault) and sometimes doesn't.
  • Yesterday, when performing automatic morning scan, AVG Free Edition found that these files have changed: C:\WINDOWS\system32\shell32.dll and C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts. The first one appears always as "changed" whenever scanning for viruses with AVG; however, the latter never appeared before as changed. Is it bad news?
  • When opening Mozilla Firefox, I'm directed to two different start pages (showed up in two different tabs) although my opening page is set as another one (My Bloglines). They are http://www.weblog.com/mozilla and http://es.www.mozilla.com/es/firefox/firefox.exe. It doesn't matter that I mark in the options panel that I want another page as the opening one: the program doesn't allow this anymore and continues showing those two pages.
  • When opening EndNote (a software that I use a lot), my default library doesn't open automatically, and I have to select it manually. Although I select the proper option for the program to automatically load my default library every time I run the program, it doesn't open.
  • When opening Microsoft Excel, the program shows up two dialog boxes with these messages: "Can't find Files\Mircosoft.xls" and "Can't find Office\OFFICE\EXCEL.EXE".
  • As I told you before, my Address Book (which is very important for me and which I use a lot) has dissapeared and I don't know how to install it back again. (Please, help me with this.) It works when opening Outlook Express, but it doesn't work when opening it directly from Start/Accesories. Windows says that "The directory for the specified file 'Files\Outlook Express\wab.exe' could not be found."
Were these issues caused by the virus? Or were they caused by all the cleaning programs that I'm running under your advise? (I'm afraid that along with some undesired and unuseful entries in my registry, they also erased some custom settings for some of my installed programs). How can I solve this issues? Do you know something about this? Please, don't take me wrong; I just wanted to know your opinion as an expert.

Thanks a lot and I'll wait for your answer.

Best regards,

This is a bug with AVG7 Antivirus,to fix it find the file avg7qt.dat and delete it.
AVG7 will then rebuild with your current system data and stop reporting these files as changed.

Were these issues caused by the virus?

Yes.

I read your last post, in which you ask me to scan my system with F-Secure Online Virus Scanner. I'm on it. Forget the F-Secure scan,i suggest you do the following instead.
Download the free 30 day trial of Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7.0:
http://usa.kaspersky.com/downloads/trial-versions.php

Disconnect from the internet.
Click on Start/Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs and remove/uninstall AVG7 Free Edition Antivirus, then restart your pc.

Now install Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7.0
Once installed, connect to the net and update Kaspersky's virus definitions.
Disconnect from the internet and do a full system virus scan.
Post back when you've done that.
Let me know if Kaspersky detected and removed anything please.

Also let me know whats happening now.

Hi, Richie,

I did what you said: I uninstalled AVG, downloaded, installed and updated Kaspersky 7.0 Trial Version and scanned my computer (I had to uninstall my firewall also. I'm currently using Windows Service Pack 2 default one). Kaspersky is a little bit complicated to understand, but finally I guess I could manage it.

However, there were a lot of "password protected" files that Kaspersky noticed me about. I didn't know anything about them, because they were not files created by me. I configured Kaspersky to scan also password protected files, and maybe that's why Kaspersky prompted me a lot of times to introduce the passwords for them. Obviously, I didn't know those passwords, so I had to press "Cancel" all the time for each one. After pressing cancel, Kaspersky showed the dialog box that I attach here as an jpg image.

Here are the results of the scan/cleaning process.

END OF REPORT
**********************************

As you see, there are a lot of files in the "System Volume Information\_restore" directory. I deleted them all (healing was impossible). I hope that I didn't erase something important! I hope that's a Windows directory and not a ThinkPad one. This ThinkPad came with an internal security chip that can create a encrypted hidden partition of the hard disk for sensible data storaging purposes. It also came with a software called "Rescue and Recovery" that helps you to create a restore backup. Although I never used these features and then disabled them, I've been severely warned that erasing some settings "unorthodoxolly" could result in information loss and denial of access to the HDD. Hope that infected and deleted files were Windows' and not ThinkPad's.

I see that there is a problem with a file named amvo.exe. I looked up for it in Google. I discovered that is a tough guy, hard to kill. I read it continues appearing even after formatting the machine!! I performed a search with the Windows tool "Search / For files and folders" and didn't find it in my system after Kaspersky eliminated it. Anyway, maybe it is hidden or something.

You asked me how my machine was doing after the Kaspersky scan. Let's see. After scan/cleaning process I rebooted and found the following:
  • When Kaspersky scanned the PC for startup processes, it didn't find anything suspicious.
  • However, Address book still doesn't work.
  • System and hidden files still don't appear even after marking/unmarking correspondt options in the Explorer.
  • Now I can turn off screen with the Fn + F3 feature (remember that this is a laptop). Yesterday and the day before yesterday I couldn't: the "Preparing to turn off monitor" dialog box just freezed (but the computer still worked).
  • EndNote still fails in displaying my default library when opening the program: I have to select it manually (which is annoying!) Obviously, I try to configure the program for it to go to my default library when opening it; but is time wasted: it doesn't work.
  • MS Excel still fails.
  • Mozilla Firefox still displays those two pages instead of my default one, even though I command the program not to do so. Also Firefox shows some web pages in a smaller font (and I didn't configured it for doing so).
  • I scanned my USB data traveler with Kaspersky. It found the same virus ("Worm.Win32.AutoRun.bnq") in the "autorun.inf" file, so KAV deleted it. However, now I can't make the autorun feature work with my USB data traveler.
After Kaspersky, I scanned also with HijackThis, and this is the log:

I hope that I didn't erase something important! I hope that's a Windows directory and not a ThinkPad one.

The System Volume Information folder is used by XP's 'System Restore' feature so your perfectly safe there.

System and hidden files still don't appear even after marking/unmarking correspondt options in the Explorer.

Click Start/Run,type regedit then press Ok
Navigate to the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder\Hidden\SHOWALL

Now right click on,and delete the value "CheckedValue" in the right hand window.

Now create a new "DWORD Value" called CheckedValue in the right hand window.
Double click on CheckedValue.
In the opening 'Edit DWORD Value' box,set the 'Value data:' to 1
Press Ok,exit regedit,restart your pc.

MS Excel still fails.

Reinstall the software.

Mozilla Firefox still displays those two pages instead of my default one, even though I command the program not to do so. Also Firefox shows some web pages in a smaller font (and I didn't configured it for doing so).

First backup your bookmarks in Firefox.
How to Back-Up Bookmarks in Firefox:
http://www.nirmaltv.com/2007/07/25/how-to-...rks-in-firefox/

Now try creating a new profile within Firefox by following these instructions:
http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/profile#new

Now import your bookmarks following the info in the link at the top.

Thanks for the advice  .

Actually, I ran a script that add the correct key in regedit. The same, basically, as you suggested. Thanks!

I did this trick with Firefox... but it didn't work.

I think I will have to reinstall the whole O. S., for there are also some programs that show errors when trying to run them (one says "Invalid key in registry. Cannot run" or something like that). I'll try first to reinstall all the softwares in trouble. But if you know any other tweaky for avoiding this boring and time-wasting process, please (please!!) let me know.

Thanks a lot, Richie, for your help. Thank you for your patience. Oh, by the way, maybe this link can help you (I'm trying to return the generosity you had with me in some way): this guy wrote a Visual Basic script for destroying this virus (I'm talking about amvo.exe and some other very similar to it) and restoring the hiding system files capability. He offers a step-by-step introduction and description of his script, although it is in Spanish.

Thanks for the Kaspersky advice. Good tool!
