Welcome to BC!

How far away, in a straight line, is your computer from the wireless router?

Any brick walls, concrete or duct work in the way?
In the beginning there was the command line.

Theres a brick wall in the way.
How far apart are they distance wise, approximately? Is it possible to run cable? Cat5 cable is cheap.
If you have wireless access you most likely already have a router. Ask your Mom to find out for sure
In the beginning there was the command line.

This one? Belkin 54g
It has 4 ports on the back

You have basically two choices. Wire it or boost the signal
In the beginning there was the command line.
