Hey xcalibur,

thanks for posting back with the fresh logs and detail.

Please note that comments are made in green, links are in red, important things are outlined by using the blue color and the numbered steps I would like you to follow are outlined with orange.

Please also take note of the following:
  • I will start working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine
  • The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
Please note that you are infected with a trojan (horse) and a virus called w32.trats.

Due to the status of some of the files you have on your computer, I strongly recommend that you do the following immediately:
  • Disconnect the infected computer from the internet until the computer can be cleaned.
  • From a clean computer, change your online passwords-- for email, for banks, eBay, forums etc.... (Do not change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker may get the new passwords and transaction information).
Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS.

Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall?

However, since the infection looks relatively small from first sight, I am happy to try and clean your PC (I am just providing you with the above information to underline the impact that can occur with files like these on your pc).

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Now, on to the fix.

Step #1

Run HijackThis, press Scan, and put a check mark next to all these entries:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PLFSet] rundll32.exe C:\Windows\PLFSet.dll,PLFDefSetting
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [zMouHk] mMouHk.exe
O4 - Global Startup: MRI_DISABLED

Close all other windows and browsers, and press the Fix Checked button.

Step #2

Please download ComboFix from here and save it to your Desktop.

When done downloading, please print out and follow these instructions: "How to download and use ComboFix"
If you downloaded ComboFix previously, delete that version and download it again as the tool is frequently updated!
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.
  • Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

    File::
    C:\Windows\mMouHk.exe
    C:\Windows\PLFSet.dll
  • Save this as CFScript.txt

    Posted Image
  • Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you, C:\ComboFix.txt. Post that log in your next reply.
    Note:
Do not mouse click combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall
  • When done, be sure to re-enable your anti-virus and other security programs.

Do NOT use Combofix unless you have been instructed to do so by a Malware Removal Expert. It is a powerful tool intended by its creator to be used under the guidance and supervision of an expert, not for private use. Using this tool incorrectly could lead to disastrous problems with your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again. Please read Combofix's Disclaimer.

Step #3

Please post back with the ComboFix log and a fresh HijackThis log. Thanks.

Hey Xcalibur,

I ran combo fix and it ran to the point of rebooting at which point I got the windows blue death screen. I rebooted, there is not combofix log.

Can you remember what the blue screen of death said? Did you have any other difficulties when you rebooted the pc?

Step #1

Please post back here: http://forums.spywareinfo.com/lofiversion/index.php/t111531.html and let them know that you are already receiving help. Otherwise you will produce a double work load and waste another helpers valuable time that s/he could spend on another user with spyware / malware problems.

Step #2

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. A malicious site could render Java content under older, vulnerable versions of Sun's software if the user has not removed them. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Plattform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "English".
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click "Continue".
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u4-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Step #3

* Clean your Cache and Cookies in InternetExplorer:
  • Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
  • Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
  • Click the "Delete Cookies" button
  • Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
  • When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK
* Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):
  • Go to Tools > Options.
  • Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
  • Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
  • Click OK to close the Options window
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.
* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin
  • Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Press OK to remove them.
Step #4

Please try running ComboFix with the information of Step #2 in my previous post using safemode.

Step #5

Please post back with a fresh HijackThis log and the ComboFix log. Thanks.

Ok steps 1, 2, 3 are done. I did notice in add/remove programs there was one called mouapp I dont know what this is and I see you are trying to help me remove mmouhk.exe is there any relation to these are is the mouapp ok?

I tried to run combofix in safe mode I had the program marked to run as admin, it worked untill the point of reboot it did not reboot and a few times in the command prompt window it said can not run please run as admin in command prompt. I also do not remember what the blue death screne said but I am sure it will come back when I try to run it again in normal mode. I also forgot to mention that when running combofix in normal mode a window pops up saying freeware implementation of REG.EXE has stopped working. In safe mode it says swreg.cfexe application error.

Not sure if you want a new HJT log without the combofix log?

Hey Xcalibur,

the symptoms you are posting about are to do with the security measurements of Microsoft Vista. Let us try something different, before we are trying to get ComboFix to run the way we wuold need it to.

Step #1

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  • Close ALL applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt to your post.
The logs can be quite lengthy..use two post if you need to get them all in.

Step #2

Please post back with the main.txt and the extra.txt of the DSS scan. Thanks.

Thanks for your help so far, just to let you know I am going to be away for the next week and unable to continue to work on my computer until next tuesday. So at that time I will do what ever your next step is, but in the mean time no point checking on me and focus on someone else.

Hey Xcalibur,

thanks for posting the logs. Please note the following:

Your log(s) show that you are using so called peer-to-peer or file-sharing programmes (in your case uTorrent). These programmes allow to share files between users as the name(s) suggest. In today's world the cyber crime has come to an enormous dimension and any means is used to infect personal computers to make use of their stored data or machine power for further propagation of the malware files. A popular means is the use of file-sharing tools as a tremendous amount of prospective victims can be reached through it.

It is therefore possible to be infected by downloading manipulated files via peer-to-peer tools and thus suggested to be used with intense care. Some further readings on this subject, along the included links, are as follows: "File-Sharing, otherwise known as Peer To Peer" and "Risks of File-Sharing Technology."

It is also important to note that sharing entertainment files and proprietary software infringes the copyright laws in many countries over the world and you are putting yourself at risk of being indicted through organisations watching over the rights of the authors of such files (i.e. the RIAA for music files, or the MPAA for movie files in the USA) or the authors of the files themselves.

Naturally there are also legal ways to use these services, such as downloading Linux distributions or office suites such as "Open Office."

Please note that AVG Anti-Spyware and Spybot S&D are outdated. If you are going to use it at a later stage, make sure you have updated their signatures beforehand.

Step #1

Click on start > run > and then paste the following into the "open" field: appwiz.cpl and press OK. From within Add or Remove Programs uninstall the following if they exist: Messenger Plus!

Messenger Plus comes with Adware, which is what caused you to have the Lop infection. If you really need it, you may install it again after the cleaning process - but do make sure you remove the Lop option that you are faced with during the install process  .

Step #2

Please download NoLop to your Desktop
  • First close any other programs you have running as this will require a reboot.
  • Double click NoLop.exe to run it.
  • Now click the button labelled "Search and Destroy".
<<your computer will now be scanned for infected files>>
  • When scanning is finished you will be prompted to reboot only if infected, Click OK.
  • Now click the "REBOOT" Button.
  • A Message should popup from NoLop. If not, double click the program again and it will finish.
If you receive an error, "mscomctl.ocx or one of its dependencies are not correctly registered," please download mscomctl.ocx to your system32 folder then rerun the program.

Please post the contents of C:\NoLop.log along with a fresh log from HijackThis. Let me know if you had any problems during the fix.

Step #3

Please download the OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    C:\Windows\Tasks\At3.job
    C:\Windows\Tasks\At2.job
    C:\Windows\Tasks\At1.job

  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be Moved" window (under the light blue bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt2
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Step #4

Do you know the following files?

C:\Windows\mouHkey.reg
C:\Windows\MOUHKDLL.dll
C:\Windows\addscancode.reg

Please have them scanned at Virustotal:
  • Please click this link --> http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html
  • When the virustotal page has finished loading, click the Browse button and navigate to the following file and click Submit: C:\Windows\mouHkey.reg
  • Once that scan has finished, save the results somewhere for posting it here later. Now please repeat the above for the following file: C:\Windows\MOUHKDLL.dll
  • Once that scan has finished, save the results somewhere for posting it here later. Now please repeat the above for the following file: C:\Windows\addscancode.reg
Please post back the results of the scan in your next post.

Step #4

Please post back with the C:\NoLop.log, the result from OTMoveIt and the VirusTotal results thanks.

Hey Xcalibur,

Step 4. I have no idea what those files were and I can not seem to scan them on that site

Can you elaborate on that? Did you get an error message? If it does not work, there is a similar service here: http://virusscan.jotti.org/

Step #1

Run HijackThis, press Scan, and put a check mark next to all these entries:

R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [MessengerPlusLiveUninstall] "C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Local\Temp\MsgPlusUninstall.exe" /Cleanup

Close all other windows and browsers, and press the Fix Checked button.

Step #2

Now please delete the following files and folders (NB: if you cannot find a file or folder that is just fine):

C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Local\Temp\MsgPlusUninstall.exe

Step #3

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Webscan (You need to use InternetExplorer or enable IEView in Firefox)

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save Report as button >> name it >> chose "Text file" in the Save as type dialogue
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Step #4

Please post back with a fresh HijackThis log, the jotti / virustotal online file scan for the two files and the log from the Kaspersky Onlinescan. Thanks.

Wen I tried to scan those files with Virus Total it ran through all the scanners but did not say anything about the file and when it was done the top said 0/32, the other Virus scan came up clean on all three files

Step 1 is done although O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [MessengerPlusLiveUninstall] "C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Local\Temp\MsgPlusUninstall.exe" /Cleanup was not there anymore.

Step 2. done

Hey Xcalibur,

...and when it was done the top said 0/32, the other Virus scan came up clean on all three files...

Thats the info that would have been enough for me . Thanks.

Step #1

Now please navigate to: Start >> Run...
  • Type: Combofix /u and hit Enter
  • This will delete:
    • \Qoobox
    • \VundoFix Backups
    • \Deckard
    • \_OTMoveIt
    • %systemroot%\erdnt\subs
  • Also resets System Restore, re-hides system & hidden files, resets system clock and last but not least, hides the file extensions of known filetypes
Step #2
  • Please double-click on "OTMoveit.exe"
  • Navigate to the following icon and click it: Posted Image
  • A file should now be downloaded. If you are asked if you want to download it, allow it (its a file with a list of helper tools it removes automatically).
  • OTMoveit might ask you to reboot. If it does so, please let it do so.
Note: after reboot, OTMoveit and your other helper tools downloaded while cleaning your Pc, will be removed. So its oke if it is not there anymore ;) .

Step #3

Please also delete Nolop.exe if you have not already.

Step #4

Please also have a look at the following links, giving some advice and suggestions for preventing future infections:I recommend you regularly visit the Windows Update Site!
  • Lots of Hacking/Trojans use the methods found (plugged by the updates) that have not been stopped by people not updating.
  • By updating your machine, you have one less headache! Posted Image
  • Update ALL Critical updates and any other Windows updates for services/programs that you use.
  • If you wish, you can also use automatic updates. This is a good thing to have if you want to be up-to-date all the time, but can also be a bit of an annoyance due to its handling and the sizes of the updates. If you wish to turn on automatic updates then you will find here is a nice little article about turning on automatic updates.
  • Note that it will download them for you, but you still have to actually click install.
  • If you do not want to have automatic updates turned on, or are on dial-up, you can always download updates seperately at: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com.
It is also a good idea to check for the latest versions of commonly installed applications that are regularly patched to fix vulnerabilities. You can check these by visiting Secunia Software Inspector and Calendar of Updates.

For a nice list of freeware programmes in all categories, please have a look at this thread with freeware products that are regarded as useful by the users of this forum: Commonly Used Freeware Replacements.

Another recommendation, is to download HostMan. It safeguards you with a regularly updated Hosts-file that blocks dangerous sites from opening. This adds another bit of safety while surfing the Internet. For installlation and setting up, follow these steps:
  • Double-click the Downloaded installer and install the tool to a location of your choice
  • Via the Startmenu, navigate to HostsMan and run the program.
    • Click "Hosts" in the menu
    • Click "Manage Updates" in the submenu
    • Out of the three, select atl east one of them (I have MVPS Host as my main one)
    • Click "Add Update." After that you will only need to click on the following button to retrieve updates:
      Posted Image
  • Click the X to exit the program.
  • Note: If you were using a custom Hosts file you will need to replace any of those entries yourself.
Finally, and definitely the MOST IMPORTANT step, click on the following tutorial and follow each step listed there:

Simple and easy ways to keep your computer safe and secure on the Internet

Glad I was able to help and if there any other problems related to your computer please feel free to post them in the appropriate forum. Though we help people with spyware and viruses here at BC, we also help people with other computer problems! Do not forget to tell your friends about us!
