Hello everyone, I was advised in another thread in the "Am I infected? ..." forum to clean up my computer (which I have done so) and post a HjT log, could you please check this and tell me if anything is bad? Thanks!

Hi Mahou,

I'm sorry it's taken so long for you to get a response to your post. If you still need help please do as follows:

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS)
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply
Once complete, please post both DSS logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you.

Hi Mahou,

Are you experiencing any symptoms or do you have reason to suspect your machine is infected?

Please open Start->Control Panel->Programs and Features, look down the list for these items and remove them:

Java 6 Update 2
Java 6 Update 3
Java SE Runtime Environment 6

These are out of date and now a security risk, you can get the latest update (version 6 update 4) from here

You have Ask Toolbar installed on your system. This program is not malware, but it may report on your surfing behavior and is considered undesirable, see here and here for more information. If you actually use this program, consider a safe alternative such as Google Toolbar.
I recommend you remove this program, you can do so via Programs and Features

Temporarily disable Windows Defender:
  • Open Start->All Programs->Windows Defender
  • Click on Tools from the top menu, then press Options
  • Scroll down to Real-time protection options, uncheck Use real-time protection and press Save
  • Close Windows Defender

Right-click the HijackThis program or shortcut, and choose Run as administrator to start the program
Choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following line:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Next, fix file associations with DSS:
  • Make sure DSS.exe is on your Desktop
  • Next press Start, copy/paste the following command into the search box and press Enter:

    "%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /daft

  • Press OK to the disclaimer(s) and then press Scan
  • Place checkmarks in any boxes that appear and press Fix
  • Then close Deckard's System Scanner

Then please do an online scan with Kaspersky:
Open Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer

When prompted, allow the installation of ActiveX components from Kaspersky
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT and then Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • The program will start to scan your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on the Save Report As button, change the Save as type: to Text file and save the file to your Desktop
  • If Internet Explorer responds saying the report has been saved to the Temporary Internet Files folder, say Yes to open the folder, then navigate to C -> Users -> (Your username) -> Desktop to locate the report
Note: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Once complete, please post the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log. Also let me know how your computer is behaving.

IN response to your question, I've been experiencing slowdowns, freeze-ups and that issue I stated with IE (the tabs eventually not opening and requiring a forced-shut down), that's why I suspected an infection. After doing as you said my computer has been slow but it's quicker than before and I've seen no freeze-ups, the IE problem, however, occurs randomly so I really cannot say eat, I'll post/edit if it occurs again. Here are the logs; Kapersky first, then HJthis.

Hi Mahou,

The Antivirus folder on your Desktop contains Smitfraudfix.exe and a SmitfraudFix folder. You should delete these files as this tool is constantly updated so if at any time you need it in the future you should download the latest version.

Please download F-Secure Blacklight to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Double click fsbl.exe to run it, choose I accept the agreement then press Scan
  • It will create the fsbl-xxxxxxx.log on your desktop containing a list of all items found.
  • Do not choose to rename any because legitimate items can also be present.
  • Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.
Once complete, please post the Blacklight report and a new HijackThis log.

Hi Mahou,

You should now delete dss.exe from your Desktop, also delete this folder:

C:\Deckard

Re-enable Windows Defender real-time protection:
  • Open Start->All Programs->Windows Defender
  • Click on Tools from the top menu, then press Options
  • Scroll down to Real-time protection options, check Use real-time protection and press Save
  • Close Windows Defender
Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
  • Press Start, then right-click Computer, select Properties then click System Protection
  • Next to You can create a Restore Point right now... click Create...
  • Type a name for the Restore Point like All Clean and press OK
  • Once the Restore Point has been created, press OK, OK and close the System dialog box.
Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
  • Next click Start, type cleanmgr in the search box and press Enter
  • Select Files from all users on this computer
  • Ensure the boxes for Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
  • Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up... and confirm by pressing Delete
  • Then press OK and Delete Files to confirm
At this stage I think your machine is clean of malware. If you continue to experience the symptoms you report and you would like further assistance, I'd recommend posting in the Windows Vista forum here at Bleeping Computer.

Here are some tips to help you keep your computer clean:

Operating system vulnerabilities can easily be exploited by malware so please ensure your operating system is automatically kept up to date by using Windows Update:
Go to Start->Control Panel->Windows Update
Click Change settings on the left side, then select Install updates automatically and choose a suitable schedule

You have good protection software installed however please ensure it is kept up to date. Check that your antivirus and antispyware programs are set to automatically update themselves daily, and that your firewall is the latest version.

Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.

Please post back to let me know that you have read this, and if there are any further issues.
