This last month or so I have become obsessed with relieving my pc of any negative programs and applications. I've always relied on myself to solve my most frustrating problems and though I'm not a computer expert I went about trying to fix my beloved pc on my own. I have downloaded and ran countless removal tools and programs and I still know that something isn't right. Every once in a while something is removed but things aren't back to normal. Winbot, vundo, smthfraud are some of the things that have been reported on my pc and I don't know how effectively they have been removed and if they have been removed what is it that is not being recognized. I have been humbled enough by this ongoing siutation which has removed me from enjoying my everyday life to ask for help. I receive my emails on my phone and I will turn on the "email subscribe' feature. I am so ready to be done with this and will be anxiously anticipating HELP(!). I don't even know where to begin...

B4 I post this log...
Sidenotes: symnatic was recognized to be still modifying keys by comodo firewall even though I had unistalled Norton a while ago when auto-protect was disabled and could not enabled...Initially this whole problem started when all my mcafee services had been disabled and limewire would continually re-open after it was closed. It was found that there was a hidden folder in my fonts folder which had almost 4 gb of partially downloaded movies and applications that I knew knew nothing about, very strange...Since then the problem was supposedly fixed and I uninstalled limewire and all my mcafee services...Also I completely unistalled internet explorer and now only use mozilla firefox after learning that ie was more prone to malware...AVG would not open...Google toolbar notifier is still active even though it has been unistalled...Scripts were acting b4 I could install bittorrent defender, comodo had warned me when this happened...There are very large and strange temp files in the documents and settings folder and suspicious files in the rest of my c:/drive period for that matter I just dont know which ones I can safely delete...Comodo has picked routinely picked up suspcious activities, suspicious b/c I hadn't initialized them yet they wanted to run and they weren't updaters...ps comodo firewall pro w/defense+ has gained my vote as mans new best friend...Enough wit da drum roll though....

Hi and welcome to Bleeping Computer! My name is Sam and I will be helping you.

Please download ComboFix and save it to your desktop.

Prior to running Combofix.exe you should disable your antivirus program and disconnect from the internet.

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's done running it will produce a log for you. Please post that log in your next reply.

Important Note - Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

No, you can keep your firewall as it is now. Just your antivirus because it may cause problems with combofix running.

The good news is that I'm not sure that we're dealing with a malware problem here. What antivirus program are you actually using right now?

Run Hijackthis. Click on "Open the Misc Tools section". Next click on "Open uninstall manager".
Press the button 'save list'. It will open a Notepad file. Place the content of that file here in your in your next post.

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of the lines listed below. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

I'm actually only using avast anitivirus 60-day trial version, I grew very suspicious of mcafee after it was permanently disabled even though I had an active paid subscription, norton after auto-protect was somehow disabled and could not be enabled, the scanner iteslf would continually open itself up too scan my files but after scanning it said it would find nothing. I had read somewhere that sometimes viruses can use your antivirus' scanner against you to infect other files. I unsuccessfully tried to remove AVG after it just wouldn't open for me. Honestly I dont know what to trust at one point I had uninstalled everything even avast. Now I have avast, spybot search and destroy w/resident , ad-aware and comodo firewall pro installed and used regularly. Of all the aforementioned I only truely trust comodo and it's not even an antivirus. Sometimes with ad-aware it comes across a suspicous file and it takes a unusually long time time to move to the next file almost like its wants to call it infected but something makes it say otherwise and repeatedly full scans find nothing. Every once in a while s-s&d or ad-aware comes across something like virtumundo or Winbot 32 and I instuct these things to be removed but I'm skeptical as to whether or not they were removed and appropriately so since my pc's performance does not improve after doing so.

This is the uninstall file...

This is my most recent HJT log. After running this scan I checked all the boxes that you instructed me to and clicked the "fix" button. I won't pretend like I know how to read it b/c I don't but I'm surprised to see that many of the programs that I had supposedly unistalled are still being listed and I don't even have a googletoolbar...Mozilla firefox is the only program I use to surf the net after uninstalling Internet explorer b/c it seemed to make things worse ...Does this mean that these programs are still trying to initiate activities?

Also comodo is showing that a backweb application (?) being listed as Logitech has being doing several things one of them being repeatedly trying to connect to the internet...Logitech is the company that made my wireless mouse...I apolegize for my long-wind its just that I want to make sure you can get the full picture of what is going on

Sincerely,
Digitally Disturbed

You must disable Spybot's Teatimer function before proceeding with this fix. Otherwise it will intefere with hijackthis.
  • Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
  • Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
  • Expand the "Tools" menu.
  • Click "Resident".
  • Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
  • In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.

I want to say this is odd though I really don't know what it means. Even though I had used those removal tools successfully and rebootedevery time, mcafee and norton still is showing up in the log...Also I noticed that dameon tools is showing up and I uninstalled that about 2months ago...As you know my avast is a 60 day trial, what do you believe is the best free antivirus out there...I have learned about typing msconfig into the command prompt...I'm trying to figure what needs to run on startup and what doesn't...Besides that things are picking up...Again thank you for all your help so far

I ran the application security task manager, it's a pretty good program except for the fact that b/c it is the free version you can't remove or quarantine the processes you can only view them...everything checked out except for the fact that it found this... Process description: ({3A2224A0-B114-4491-9305-FD0E4B55FA1E}) it said it's manufacturer was unknown and it was an invalid registry. I googled it and found that this was a registry key for VIRTUMONDE!!!...Is there any evidence of such from the HJT or Combofix logs?

Even though I had used those removal tools successfully and rebootedevery time, mcafee and norton still is showing up in the log...Also I noticed that dameon tools is showing up and I uninstalled that about 2months ago

Actually it's looking better, but I'm wondering why these programs that were uninstalled are not being removed correctly. Are you uninstalling these through Add/Remove Programs via the Control Panel?

Please disable Teatimer once again as you did before.
Fix these lines with Hijackthis.

That's just an orphaned entry and it likely indicates an older infection that wasn't completely removed. It won't cause you any problems as long as the malicious files are not present. However, if you can post the exact registry entry that it identifies, we can remove it completely.
