Hello,

I've been reading your forum for tips for the last few months, but never had a problem I needed to ask about.

My problem sounds exactly like Skyetsu's from 12/24/07 - Unknown Malware Problem.... and I want to know if I should do exactly what was told to him or do I need to go through all the tests etc.

Now I've been having a problem with a malware on my computer for a two weeks now and although I've tried many anti - virus, trojan, spyware and adware softwares, none have helped. Can someone help me? I first noticed suspicious files in the in the C:\Documents and Settings\Family\Local Settings\Temp\ folder. In the folder, there were several simular files starting with a number (less than 100) and ending with exhmunml35dl.exe e.g. 96exhmunml35dl.exe. They have a file icon of MFC, their description is TODO: <File description> and their company is TODO: <Company name>. Apart from these there was also a CONF file hmunml35dl.exe.conf (also in the temp folder). There is also a nameless file called .conf (also in the Temp folder)

And here is the problem, no matter how many times I delete those files, they keep reappearing. I tried deleting everything in the Temp folder and the result is the same. Everytime the file reappears it runs as a process and slows down the system significantly, so always when my mouse starts lagging and I have to wait a long time for an app to start up I know that the problem has returned.

My AVG Anti-Virus 7.5 Free with fresh update does not detect anything except every once in awhile it detects a file 8ex.exe and then cleans it. I scanned one of the files on http://virusscan.jotti.org/ and saw that VBA32 detects a malware. I scanned the system with VBA32 and it indeed found some infected files, a few in the Temp directory and a few in the RECYCLER. All contained the same malware (Win32.HLLW.Medbod). Although I deleted the files, the problem didn't disappear.

I also ran Adaware and Spybot S&D.

Here is the HijackThis log shortly before I posted this:

I understand about having to handle many post before mine. It has been stressfull not getting my online fix for over a week though.

Here is a HijackThis logfile immediatly after running a Kesparsky online scan, then running Adaware and from Safe Mode Spybot. Kesparsky and Spybot found nothing at all Adaware found 8 tracking cookies. Since my previous post I had removed the key shown below fron the run section and it seemed to eliminate the problem for a day or so, but now is back with a vengence. It is like I pissed it off. The key reappeared and I eliminated the Key once again.

If you have previously downloaded ComboFix,please delete that version now.
Warning
You should NOT use Combofix unless you have been instructed to do so by a Malware Removal Expert.
It is intended by its creator to be used under the guidance and supervision of an expert, not for private use.
Using this tool incorrectly could render your system/pc inoperable.

Now download Combofix by sUBs and save to your desktop:
Note
It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop

Close any open browsers.
Double click on combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's finished it will produce a log.
Post the entire contents of C:\ComboFix.txt into your next reply.
Note
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running.
That may cause the program to freeze/hang.

Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt unless I ask.
Note
In case your Antivirus or any other realtime scanner is displaying an alert after you downloaded Combofix or while you use Combofix, please disable your scanner and redownload Combofix again.
Some scanners may see some combofix related components as suspicious and block or delete them while there's nothing wrong with them.

Also post a new Hijackthis log please.

Posted below are the logs.

As far as how the computer is working, after running SUPERAntispyware and needing to reboot to remove the item it found AVG Control center siad it could not load, I tried to load manualy but it failed, so I rebooted again and AVG control center loaded. I then played around on the internet a bit. One odd thing I found was that on some web pages with advertisments the advertisments would not load (so what) but then the back button took two tries to go back. Shutting down IE7 and restarting seemed to have fixed the advertisment/ back button issue. Temporary Internet files seem to pile up fast, with just reading Yahoo news I got 1,100 temporary internet files where I did not watch them before but it seemed that there wern't that many before when the computer was working well and I'd go to delete temporary internet files just to clean house. This could all be parania on my part though. As far as the problem that first brought me here (with the .conf and other files in my temp folder) for help I do not currently see it, but I had gotten rid of it for a couple of days before, so I'll need to wait and see. I'll play around with the computer after some sleep and give a more through evaluation.

I see that the registry key under Run- with smvss in it is still there, should i manually remove it myself? I know it won't hurt anythng but it does make me nervous.

Sorry for the late reply, work and family have had me very busy.

I have not run the cleanup program yet as I am concerned that cleanup says that it will remove newsgroups. I have several newsgroups setup in Outlook Express that are password protected and I do not remember the passwords. Will cleanup remove the newsgroups from OE? I have requested the passwords and am awaiting replies just in case they are deleted.

Thanks for your help!

Ok, I ran Cleanup, Kaspersky and Hijack this, the results are posted below. Kaspersky was confusing with virus found messages popping up during scan and it seeemed to wait for me to do something before it went on and then at end of scan I didn't know what to do if anything. I then selected delete for some and quarantine for others. Other virus scanners I have used scan and show the viruses as found and then at the end ask you to delete/quarantine/fix. Kaspersky doesn't do that, it will take some reading up on Kaspersky to understand how it works. Also it took almost 16 hours to scan. I was surprised it found Combofix as a problem. I also could not find a way to save the Kaspersky log to a file other than copy and paste.

I noticed in the HijakThis log smss.exe is still in the running processes list, is this ok?

Why is Kaspersky 7.0 running twice in the running processes list?

The computer seems sluggish, this I'm guessing is because Kaspersky, Super Antispyware and S&D Teatimer are loading on startup. Can one or more be turned off?

I know I am asking a lot of questions, but I not oly want my computer clean but I would like to understand what went wrong, and what should be running to help keep it clean

Download Avira AntiVir Personal Edition Classic[Free]:
http://www.free-av.com/
Don't install it just yet.

Disconnect from the internet.
Remove/uninstall Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7.0 via Start/Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs.

Now install Avira AntiVir Personal Edition Classic[Free].
Perform a full scan with Avira and allow it to delete everything it detects.
Restart your pc when you've done.
After restart, open Avira Antivirus and select "Reports".
Then double click the report from the full scan you have just completed.
Click the "Report File" button, then copy and paste the report into your next reply.

Please disable Spybot S&D's protection,or it will interfere.
You can enable it after you're clean.

Open Spybot and click on 'Mode' and check 'Advanced Mode'.
Click on 'Tools' in bottom left hand corner.
Click on the 'System Startup' icon.
Uncheck 'Teatimer' box and/or uncheck 'Resident'.
Click the 'Allow Change' box.
Then, check next to the computer clock to see if the icon for Spybot is still there.
If it is, right click it and choose 'exit Spybot-S&D Resident'.
Restart the computer.
If you find you're experiencing problems disabling Spybot's Tea-Timer,follow the info in the link below:
http://www.russelltexas.com/malware/teatimer.htm

The order in which I did things is:
I downloaded Avira, uninstalled Kaspersky, turned off Teatimer, installed Avira, got Avira updates, did full scan, sent one file to quarantine instead of deleting it by mistake, the rest were deleted, rebooted, ran HijakThis, and removed 016 entry.

I haven't had time to test the system to see if it is less sluggish than it has been. I will post on the systems performance late tonight after I get a chance to test it out.
