Hi,

I am fairly certain that I have the Vundo virus on my system, and may have several other's as well. So far I have ran a Symantec Virus scan which was unable to remove everything, a Spybot Search & Destroy scan, which revealed and cleaned several items, including a Virtumundo file. I also ran an avast pre-boot scan and it found one file which is listed last below., and have attached the log from that. Finally, I ran the VundoFix.exe application which has been posted on here a few times. That found one file, but was unable to remove it. I included the log from that scan. Finally, I attached my HijackThis log.

Thanks for your help!!!

I think I may have cleaned up my system on my own, but I'm not completely sure.

Here's an updated log if someone is able to just check it over for any other potential problems

Thanks for your help!

Hello pdq06,

Let's run ComboFix.

Disable you Norton Antivirus before running ComboFix, as it will stop it from running.

Please navigate to the system tray on the bottom right hand corner and look for a symantec sign.
right-click it -> chose "Disable Auto-Protect."
select a duration of 5 hours (this assures no interference with the cleanup of your pc)
click "Ok."
a popup will warn that protection will now be disabled
You succesfully disabled the Norton Antivirus Guard.

You should NOT use Combofix unless you have been instructed to do so by a Malware Removal Expert. It is intended by its creator to be used under the guidance and supervision of an expert, not for private use. Using this tool incorrectly could lead to disastrous problems with your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again.

If you have used Combofix before, please delete the version you have and redownload it again, because Combofix is being updated everyday.

Disconnect from the Internet while running ComboFix.

Temporarily disable any anti-virus and anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan.
They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause unpredictable results.
Some scanners may see some combofix related components as suspicious and block or delete them while there's nothing wrong with them.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe to your Desktop.
Note:
It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop

2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you, C:\ComboFix.txt. Post the ComboFix log and a fresh Hijackthis log in your next reply.
Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt - unless I ask you to.
Do NOT run ComboFix more than once.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall
Do not run Combofix more than once.
In case you see a sed.cfexe error with the option to send a report or not, choose "don't send".
The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled. If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop. Even when ComboFix appears to be doing nothing, look at your Drive light. If it is flashing, Combofix is still at work.

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

If you have Norton Antivirus installed then disable script blocking so it will not interfere with the fix. Note that not all versions of Norton Antivirus have the script blocking feature.

To disable Norton Script blocking Service:

* Disable the Script Blocking Service:
To open Services, click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Services.
Find ScriptBlocking services, Right-click the service, and then click and then click Properties.
On the General tab, under Startup, click Disabled.
Under Service Status, click Stop button. Click Apply button.

* Disable the Script Blocking In Norton Settings:
Start Norton Antivirus.
Click Options. If a menu appears when you click Options, then click Norton Antivirus. The Norton Antivirus Options dialog box appears.
Click Script Blocking.
Uncheck Enable Script Blocking (recommended).
Click OK
You can reenable it afterwards when everything is clean again.

Hi pdq06,

You have some suspicious files we need to check.

Go to My Computer and double-click C.
Go to the Tools menu and select 'Folder Options'.
On the 'View' tab select 'show hidden files and folders',
deselect (uncheck) 'hide protected operating system files (recommended)', and
deselect (uncheck) "Hide extensions for known file types.'

Go to next site: http://www.virustotal.com/en/indexf.html
On top you'll find 'Browse'
Click the browse button and browse to next file:

C:\WINDOWS\troy44.exe

Click open.
Then click the 'Send' button next to it.
This will scan the file. Please be patient.
Save the results in notepad.

Perform the same for next files:

C:\WINDOWS\UniFish3.exe

Once scanned, copy and paste the results also in your next reply.

NOTE: I usually enter my email address at virus total so they can send me the scan results. They usually only take a couple minutes to reply.
You can copy/paste the results of scan results here.
If I've saved you time & money,
please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you! You can donate using a credit card and PayPal. Thank you!

Thanks SifuMike,

I followed your instructions by enabling the viewing of hidden files. As I was about to upload the troy44.exe file for scanning, my Symantec program detected and deleted the file. The UniFish3.exe gave the following negative scan:

Hi pdq06,

The C:\WINDOWS\troy44.exe that Norton antivirus caught should be in the Norton quarentine folder. You can delete it from the quarentine folder. If it has previously been deleted then it will be in System Restore folder, and we will clear out that folder shortly.

Not clean yet, but you shall be shortly.

Click Start, then Run and type Notepad and click OK.
Open notepad - don't use any other text editor than notepad or the script will fail.
Copy/paste the text in the code box below into notepad:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\qtvwa.bak1
C:\WINDOWS\system32\qtvwa.ini2

Folder::
C:\VundoFix Backups

Name the Notepad file CFScript.txt and Save it to your desktop.

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

Hi SifuMike,

When I ran Combofix with the new script, it did not automatically reboot the system, but I did one anyways. When Windows started back up, I had the unrecognized file extension window pop up from windows attempting to open a file called spruce.exe.vir. Here are the new ComboFix and HijackThis logs.

Thanks!

Hi pdq06,

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 3.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 3".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language jre-6-windows-i586.exe and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u3-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Your log looks clean! Good job on the cleanup!

Uninstall ComboFix, go to to Start > Run & type in ComboFix /u
Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /
Then hit enter.

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

Please read and follow How did I get infected?, With steps so it does not happen again!
