Hi,

I have an anti virus program on my sys; avg free; which is always on.

I am wondering if when running other anti virus programs such as housecall, do I need to turn off my anti virus program in my system?

And if so;

then I would think I'd be unprotected for any incoming viruses while an external anti virus program is checking system.

Thanks for your help,
tapero

Some online scanners will detect existing anti-virus software and refuse to cooperate. You may have to disable the real-time protection components of your existing anti-virus and try running the scan again. If you do this, remember to turn them back on after you are finished.

For example:

Why does ESET Online Scanner run slowly on my computer?
If you have other anti-virus, anti-spyware or anti-malware programs running on your computer, they may intercept the scan being performed by the ESET Online Scanner and slow it down. You may wish to disable the real-time protection components of your other security software before running the ESET Online Scanner. Remember to turn them back on after you are finished!

ESET Online Scan FAQs

Other programs like Panda ActiveScan uses non-encrypted virus definitions so its best to disable your resident anti-virus program before scanning in order to avoid "false detections" of its files.

Hi!

Thanks for your reply.

As panda and housecall and others need me to be connected to the net, then won't I be vulnerable to viruses while scan is occuring if I disable avg?

thanks,
tapero

The website where you are performing the online scan is safe. You should not be doing anything else (surfing, using your computer, etc) until the scan has been completed. As soon as it has finished, re-enable your anti-virus so you will be protected when going to other sites.
