Dear all, I had a recent problem with hijacking. Have run spybot and Ad-Aware, the latter finding a programe called
PreviewAdService wityh an application called
PrevAdServ.exe

AdAware seemed to be able to delete this after a reboot.

I was also able to delete the folder of the same name, in safe mode.

DO you have any idea how this came to be installed? Could it be through MSN toolbar installation?

Here is the latest log. The offending item appears to have gone (I did have one on a previous scan, which I a asked HJT to "fix" - your server seemed to be down - and the browser problem seems to be fixed.

PreviewAdService appears to be a WindUpdates Adware variant. See http://www.windupdates.com/

You are using an outdated version of Hijackthis. Please download and install the newest version, v1.99.1, from this HijackThis download site.

Then post a new log.

Configure Windows to enable viewing of Hidden and System files.

Start HJT and click on the SCAN button. Put a check mark in front of the following lines if they still show:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ap9h4qmo] C:\WINDOWS\System32\ap9h4qmo.exe

O16 - DPF: {75D1F3B2-2A21-11D7-97B9-0010DC2A6243} (SecureLogin.SecureControl) - http://secure2.comned.com/signuptemplates/ActiveSecurity.cab

With ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED, click on Fix Checked.

Open Windows Explorer (Windows key+e), navigate to and delete the following files and folders if found:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\ap9h4qmo.exe <--File

If any of these resist being deleted, boot into Safe Mode and try from there. Then reboot back into normal mode.

Then let's see a fresh HJT log.

Log looks clean...great job! Any problems not yet addressed?

Once again, though, I must urge you to visit http://www.windowsupdate.com and install all available critical and security updates - including SP2. An unpatched Windows XP system is full of security holes.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

How did I get infected ? With steps so it does not happen again !

Many thanks for your help!

I had a previous problem, also sorted by your good offices, 3 months ago. HOWEVER, when I try to install Windows SP2, all sorts of things go wrong - also EVEN with SP1! In fact, forSP2, the installation could never be completed... Conflicts with software and particularly drivers etc... So, it seems the only answer would be a new installation, from scratch, on a clean HD. This seems a very major operation, esp the reinstallation of all drivers etc... Several days' work, also saving all existing files... Any better suggestions?

I do run Norton Anti-virus and personal firewall as part of Nrton Internet security. I also have spybot and adaware, but admit to not running them that often!

Thanks again!

SP2 can be a problem on some system, and sometimes a clean install is the only solution.

Some good infomation can be found here, along with the included links on that page.

I'm not enough of a system guru to be of any more help than that on this issue.
