I recently installed XP Home SP2 on a new laptop and did all my Windows Updates successfully. Then I returned to Windows Update the next day and the day after that, to make sure I didn't miss any. But then yesterday (the third day), suddenly this update was listed:

Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB936181)
Download size: 5.4 MB , 22 minutes
A security issue has been identified in Microsoft XML Core Services (MSXML) that could allow an attacker to compromise your Windows-based system and gain control over it. You can help protect your computer by installing this update from Microsoft. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer. Once you have installed this item, it cannot be removed.

When I researched the KB number, it shows as being an old update and one that many people had issues with installing.

1. Why did this suddenly come up for me, when it didn't upon initial Windows Updates instillation nor the two days after that I went back and checked?

2. Is this something I should install? (The "it cannot be removed" part always makes me nervous...)

Any help is appreciated -- thanks, as always!

When info starts with "A security issue..." that indicates to me that there is no mandated/predictable timing for producing such at WinUpdate.

Yes, it should be installed.

FWIW: I had the same hesitation when I first actually looked at the description.

I'm updating now. Thanks!

(Weird that it took three days to show up in WU though...)
