Balloon from yellow triangle (with exclamation point) icon in system tray says (one of several):
Internet attack attempt detected.
Somebody's trying to infect your PC with spyware or harmful viruses. Run full system scan now to protect your computer from Internet attacks, hijacking attempts and spyware. Click here for the list of available security updates...

Clicking the balloon results in trying to open: c:\Windows\system32\drivers\pt.htm but the file is not on the PC

Desktop background (red text on black):
Warning! Spyware threat has been detected on your PC.
Your computer has several fatal errors due to spyware activity.
Your IP address is #IP# and via this address an unauthorized access was gained by another computer. It is stongly recommended to install an antispyware software to close all security vulnerabilities.

I found a few sites that show the same symptoms:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/lof...hp/t115739.html
http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums...thread.id=68334
http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.php?showtopic=12896

Common first step seems to be running ComboFix, but I haven't done anything with it yet.

Thanks in advance for your help! :)

Welcome to the BleepingComputer HijackThis Logs and Analysis forum jd1
My name is Richie and i'll be helping you to fix your problems.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
When VundoFix re-opens,click the "Scan for Vundo" button.
Once it's done scanning, click the "Remove Vundo" button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click "YES".
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed,it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click "OK".
Post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt into your next reply.
Note:
It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case,VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

If you have previously downloaded ComboFix,please delete that version now.

Now download Combofix and save to your desktop:
Note
It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop

Close any open browsers.
Double click on combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's finished it will produce a log.
Post the entire contents of C:\ComboFix.txt into your next reply.
Note
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running.
That may cause the program to freeze/hang.

Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt unless I ask.
Note
In case your Antivirus or any other realtime scanner is displaying an alert after you downloaded Combofix or while you use Combofix, please disable your scanner and redownload Combofix again.
Some scanners may see some combofix related components as suspicious and block or delete them while there's nothing wrong with them.

Well, I ran VundoFix V6.7.7 (the download link) and clicked "Scan for Vundo." After a few minutes of scanning, it reported "Done Searching for files." and then "Done Searching for files. No infected files were found."

Therefore, I didn't click the "Remove Vundo" button, and I didn't run ComboFix. Do you want me to run ComboFix?

Thanks!

Here's C:\VundoFix.txt:

VundoFix V6.7.7

The desktop is back to normal (I can set a different background as well as the icons), and Task Manager opens with Ctrl-Shift-Esc (and all the other ways).

Thanks for your help and lightning-fast response! :)

And I removed the said entries w/ HJT. I'm going to wait until morning to run the scan -- I know it will take a while, and I'll make sure I don't have other computers on the same router at the same time as the infected PC. (Never hurts to be too safe! :)

Here's a HJT log for the time being:

Well, I ran the F-Secure scan and it crashed a few hours into the scan. I restarted it, and it did the same thing:

"fssm32.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." Blah blah - normal MS crash dialog.

When I close it, the scanner says, "An error has occurred! Please close the scanner and your browser, then try again. (Id: 24)"

It was scanning a file in the Outlook Express email store when it crashed the second time:

C:\Documents and Settings\admin\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{ABC12312-12E1-4DDD-D838- BLAH BLAH}\...

The Symantec AV Auto-Protect is enabled and detected a few Trojans when the F-Secure scanner tried to access them. I've attached the results. (It won't let me upload .CSV so I added a .TXT extension.)

Meanwhile, I'm going to run a full system scan with Symantec AV until I hear back from you. Would it be better to run an online scanner?

BTW, the PC seems more responsive than it was before. It has several active antispyware scanners on it: SUPERAntiSpyware Free, AVG Anti-Spyware, and Ad-Aware Ad-Watch 2007. Should they all be running at once? I've been closing them when the computer starts up and just running Symantec AV and Symantec Client Firewall.

Thanks!

I ran that Symantec scan with full scan, all file types (including compressed files), boot sector, all files, and memory, for viruses, spyware, and adware. Results: 205213 files scanned (far fewer than F-Secure's 400K when it crashed), 0 risks found, in 33 minutes.

Thanks!

Your log is clean  ,please do the following:

Click on Start/Run,copy and paste ComboFix /u into the 'Open:' space, then press Ok.

Posted Image

Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe again to run it.
Click on the 'Cleanup' button Posted Image
When you do this a text file named cleanup.txt will be downloaded from the internet.
If you get a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTMoveIt attempting to contact the internet you should allow it to do so.
When the 'Confirm' box appears click 'Yes'.
Restart your pc when prompted.

Click on Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore.
In the 'System Restore' window, click on the 'Create a Restore Point' button, then click 'Next'.
In the window that appears, enter a description\name for the Restore Point, then click on 'Create',wait, then click 'Close'.
The date and time will be created automatically.

Next click on Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Cleanup.
The 'Select Drive' box will appear, click on Ok.
The 'Disk Cleanup for [C:]' box will appear, click on the 'More Options' tab.
At the bottom in the 'System Restore' window, click on the 'Clean up...' button.
A box will pop up 'Are you sure you want to delete all but the most recent restore point?',click on 'Yes'.
Click on 'Yes' at 'Are you sure you want to perform these actions?'.
Now wait until 'Disk Cleanup' finishes and the box disappears.

OK, just finished those steps up. I'm going to run some Windows Updates now along with updates for the antispyware programs. The computer has several active antispyware scanners on it: SUPERAntiSpyware Free, AVG Anti-Spyware, and Ad-Aware Ad-Watch 2007. Should they all be running at once? I've been closing them when the computer starts up and just running Symantec AV and Symantec Client Firewall.

Also, I'm interested in sending you some money via the Donate link with PayPal, although it may be a while before I can do so. Is the system safe and secure -- i.e., you've used it before? Is there another way I could send it to you, or is PayPal your preferred means? I've used PayPal without any problems since I have an eBay account, but I've never done a money transfer with it before. I've heard some bad things about PayPal before, so I just want to be sure.

I cannot thank you enough for your outstanding assistance. Have a great day!

Alright. I will probably send the payment within the next week or two via PayPal.

Oh, one more thing. What was it that tipped you off to use ComboFix? I'm considering signing up for one of those online sypware/malware removal "schools." Is that what you did? Is it related to the "Alliance of Security Analysis Professionals" in your posts? Lastly, does BleepingComputer have one of these?

Again, thank you very much!
