Most members here use one or two applications that, when combined, will eliminate most spyware. Both are free and update frequently. There is an excellent BC tutorial about spyware, with links to Ad-AwareSE and Spybot Search and Destroy, the two applications:

Most spyware is the result of the computer user downloading something without fully understanding precisely what is being downloaded; many fun/pretty/toolbar programs, for example, have additional programs that sneak in with the download.

There are some excellent programs that are very effective in keeping a computer clean of spyware. Ad-Aware and Spybot are scanning programs with immunization functions as well. Spyware Blaster is another program that acts as a sort of shield, or guard, without a scanning function, but very effective. All are free.
