Welcome to the BleepingComputer HijackThis Logs and Analysis forum lotty
My name is Richie and i'll be helping you to fix your problems.

Before we can provide you with any further assistance,you first need to go here and install Service Pack 1a;
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloa...p1/default.mspx
This will patch numerous security vulnerabilities in Internet Explorer and the Windows operating system.
As your machine stands right now it's exremely vulnerable to infection.
You need to get these updates installed first before we can proceed or we’ll both be wasting our time.

Do not install Service Pack 2.
If you install SP 2 on an infected machine it will cause serious problems within the operating system.

Once you've completed the above, post a new Hijackthis log into this topic.

I tried to do the update of service pack 1a in the safe mode I have been running in, recieved an error "0x8007043c" which I looked up and it means the update system will not work in "safe mode", I tried in regular mode but the machine will not respond... do you have a suggestion other ways that I can get this update.

Thank you

Download Windows XP Service Pack 1a (SP1a) on the pc with an internet connection:
http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/1031364135/1

Once downloaded, burn the Service Pack to blank cd/dvd.
Insert that cd/dvd into the cd/dvd-rom drive on the problem pc and install it that way.

If you have previously downloaded ComboFix,please delete that version now.
Warning
You should NOT use Combofix unless you have been instructed to do so by a Malware Removal Expert.
It is intended by its creator to be used under the guidance and supervision of an expert, not for private use.
Using this tool incorrectly could render your system/pc inoperable.

Now download Combofix and save to your desktop:
Note
It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop

Close any open browsers.
Double click on combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's finished it will produce a log.
Post the entire contents of C:\ComboFix.txt into your next reply.
Note
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running.
That may cause the program to freeze/hang.

Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt unless I ask.
Note
In case your Antivirus or any other realtime scanner is displaying an alert after you downloaded Combofix or while you use Combofix, please disable your scanner and redownload Combofix again.
Some scanners may see some combofix related components as suspicious and block or delete them while there's nothing wrong with them.

Now go to:
C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe
Right click on Hijackthis.exe and select 'Rename', rename it to abc.bat
Double click on abc.bat(which is still Hijackthis.exe),post that log into your next reply please.

Ok finally go the combofix done. Started it in safe mode because could not get regular mode to run. when the system rebooted it started in regular mode... several things tried to get in the way, zone alarm, spy bot, windows update, etc.. But I left it alone and an hour later I finally got the log.. I hope it is ok..

I will post that log now, and then I will do the process to the Hijack this... and post it..

Thank you

You have a Backdoor Trojan present on your pc .
A Backdoor is a software program that gives an attacker unauthorized access to a machine and the means for remotely controlling the machine without the user's knowledge. A Backdoor compromises system integrity by making changes to the system that allow it to by used by the attacker for malicious purposes unknown to the user.

They are typically installed without user interaction through security exploits, and may allow an attacker to remotely control the infected machine. Such risks may allow the attacker to install additional malware and use the compromised machine to participate in denial of service attacks, spamming, and bot nets, or to transmit sensitive data to a remote server. The malware may be cloaked and not visible to the user. These risks severely compromise the system by lowering security settings, installing 'backdoors,' infecting system files, or spreading to other networked machines.

If your computer was used for online banking or has credit card information on it, all passwords should be changed immediately to include those used for email, eBay and forums.
You should consider them to be compromised.
They should be changed by using a different computer and not the infected one,if not an attacker may get the new passwords and transaction information. Banking and credit card institutions should be notified of the possible security breech.

Since your computer was compromised read:
How to report ID theft, fraud, drive-by installs, hijacking and malware:
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10451

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall:
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063

Let me know how you wish to proceed in your next reply.

If you wish to carry on with the cleanup, please continue below:

Sorry It took me so long to get back... The computer that has the problem does not have a cd... Just a partitioned drive ("D") ... It will not allow me to create a cd from it and the manufacture does not list the cd as available...

I want to wipe everything out and replace it...

If I run recovery from "D" will it clean "C" or do I format "c" ???? and would that work...

Thank you for all of your help its great

I have finally resumed trying to get the computer clean... I have done the following

Ran system recovery.. in the quick format mode

loaded and ran scans in

zone alarm
spy sweeper

loaded spybot and ran scan became real concerned when it found issues

ran bitdefender

ran stinger

ran updates from microsoft

loaded sp1a

I am real concerned that everthing is gone.. (felt that the system recovery would wipe out anything that was there.. but the system is still very slow (having to do a lot of things in safe mode) and when spybot found (wild tangent) I would really like your help to assure all is gone...

I am sending this from another computer because the computer with the issue failed when I tried to post from there...

the following is the current log from hijack this

Thank you..
