Alright, so this is a friend's computer who needed serious help. When I got her laptop (IBM Thinkpad with XP Pro) it would barely start up. I've run adaware (which has 'gotten rid' of a lot of viruses and malware), I've also run hijackthis which has also allowed me to stop a lot of things. But I believe there's still traces in the registry that I don't know how to get out, as well as a few other possible viruses I can't find...oh yeah, and the countless number of other problems I'm facing..
________

So first off, when I boot and log in, I need to manually start explorer.exe through task manager.

Afterwards, I get two errors..

"Symantec Service Framework encountered a problem and needed to close"

szAppName : ccSvcHst.exe szAppVer : 107.0.0.102 szModName : PifPep07.dll szModVer : 1.3.0.34 offset : 0000982e

This only happens after I try to install Norton. I say try because it usually gets to the final stages and then blue screens on me and restarts. When I start the setup again I can only remove all and start over..just to get the same results.

I'm also getting a...

"Microsoft Windows - The system has recovered from a serious error" message. I'm assuming it's from a bad restart (BSOD?)

When I have Norton uninstalled I still have to manually start explorer.exe
________

Next I've stopped a lot of things in msconfig on startup, but there's a few things I can't find or am afraid to stop. In the task manager iexplorere.exe is running on startup though I don't use IE?

also mdm.exe is running and I've searched...it could either be a Microsoft manager of some sort, or a virus...but I can't find it anywhere, just in the task manager.

When I got the computer, I ran all the windows updates, and got it up to SP2 as well with it's updates...it was pretty far behind.

Any and all help is much appreciated! I hope have a couple days left to fix it. Else it'll be a reformat and I don't want to have to resort to that.

Thanks!
