Greetings!
I'd be very grateful for any help with a malware/spyware problem I've run into. I'm not sure how it happened, I started getting the message “The application or DLL C:\Windows\System32\wowfx.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette.” Can no longer access internet, so I'm using my office computer to do research. I attempted to complete all the steps suggested on this website: 1) Went to "Start" -> "Run" and typed in the box: "cleanmgr," but computer froze up. 2) Ran Ad-Aware several times, problem persisted. 3) Downloaded Spybot, but program will not run. 4) Ran McAfee Stinger, problem persists. Other symptoms: can no longer access control panel. Occasionally get message indicating that a Trojan has been identified and removed. Downloaded HijackThis, here's the log. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Jim

Welcome to the BleepingComputer HijackThis Logs and Analysis forum Jim_888
My name is Richie and i'll be helping you to fix your problems.

If you have previously downloaded ComboFix,please delete that version now.
Warning
You should NOT use Combofix unless you have been instructed to do so by a Malware Removal Expert.
It is intended by its creator to be used under the guidance and supervision of an expert, not for private use.
Using this tool incorrectly could render your system/pc inoperable.

Now download Combofix and save to your desktop:
Note
It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop

Close any open browsers.
Double click on combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's finished it will produce a log.
Post the entire contents of C:\ComboFix.txt into your next reply.
Note
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running.
That may cause the program to freeze/hang.

Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt unless I ask.
Note
In case your Antivirus or any other realtime scanner is displaying an alert after you downloaded Combofix or while you use Combofix, please disable your scanner and redownload Combofix again.
Some scanners may see some combofix related components as suspicious and block or delete them while there's nothing wrong with them.

Also post a new Hijackthis log please.

Hi Richie-
Many thanks for your response. I downloaded and ran Combofix, and have pasted the log in below. I also re-ran HijackThis and have posted the new log right after the Combofix log. Please let me know what the next steps are. Thanks again for your help, I really appreciate it.
Jim

Hi Ritchie-
1. I previously deleted spysweeper – am I missing something?
2. I ran the Kaspersky Online Scanner (please see results below). Looks like I have a lot of infected files. Any idea how these guys escaped previous scans? Would you suggest purchasing the Kaspersky anti-virus program?
3. I also re-ran HijackThis (please see log below).
4. I no longer get the message “The application or DLL C:\Windows\System32\wowfx.dll is not a valid Windows image.” Also, I am no able to access the internet. Also, I am now able to access my control panel. But I’m now getting as message that says “Windows cannot find “C:\WINDOWS \System32\propoer.exe.” Also, computer runs very slowly. Anything else I can do? Thanks again,
Jim

Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe again to run it.
Click on the 'Cleanup' button Posted Image
When you do this a text file named cleanup.txt will be downloaded from the internet.
If you get a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTMoveIt attempting to contact the internet you should allow it to do so.
When the 'Confirm' box appears click 'Yes'.
Restart your pc when prompted.

Download Avenger from the link below:
http://swandog46.geekstogo.com/avenger.zip
Unzip/extract it to your desktop.

Start up Avenger.
Check the 'Input script manually' option.
Click the Magnifying Glass icon.
In the box that opens, copy and paste ALL the following text inside the quote box below:

Files to delete:
C:\Documents and Settings\Jim\wn852.exe

Then click on 'Done'.
Click the Traffic Light icon to start the program.
Then press OK at the prompts to reboot your PC.

Post the Avenger output.txt, which you can find at C:\Avenger\.txt into your next reply.

Click on Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore.
In the 'System Restore' window, click on the 'Create a Restore Point' button, then click 'Next'.
In the window that appears, enter a description\name for the Restore Point, then click on 'Create',wait, then click 'Close'.
The date and time will be created automatically.

Next click on Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Cleanup.
The 'Select Drive' box will appear, click on Ok.
The 'Disk Cleanup for [C:]' box will appear, click on the 'More Options' tab.
At the bottom in the 'System Restore' window, click on the 'Clean up...' button.
A box will pop up 'Are you sure you want to delete all but the most recent restore point?',click on 'Yes'.
Click on 'Yes' at 'Are you sure you want to perform these actions?'.
Now wait until 'Disk Cleanup' finishes and the box disappears.

Copy and paste ALL the following text in the Quote box below into Notepad.
Click on File(in the menu at the top)>Save as../Save as Type: 'All Files' /File name: fix.reg to your desktop.
Then double click on the fix.reg file on your desktopPosted Imageand agree to merge the information into the registry, then restart your pc.

Thanks Ritchie-

1. I ran OTMoveIt.exe again and re-booted the computer as instructed.

2. Ran Avenger, please see log below.

3. Created a new Restore Point.

4. I clicked on “Next click on Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Cleanup.” A window appeared that said “Disk cleanup is calculating how much space you will be able to free on C. This may take a few minutes. Scanning: Compress old files.” I waited a while, but nothing happened. So I left the machine on overnight, but today, still nothing. So I proceeded to the next step.

5. Successfully merged the information in “fix.reg” into the registry.

6. Re-booted and re-ran HijackThis (please see new log below).

7. I no longer get the message “Windows cannot find “C:\WINDOWS \System32\propoer.exe.”

8. Message appears stating “This version of Windows XP is no longer secure.”

9. Computer still runs very slowly, takes about 30-40 seconds to open a Word document.
Thanks again,
Jim

Now go to Windows Update and get your system up to date.
Install all the latest important/high priority updates including Service Pack 2.
When you've done, post a new Hijackthis log into your next reply.
Let me know how your pc is running now.

Thanks Ritchie-
Before I download SP-2, I just want to make sure I'm not screwing up. In the introduction to this forum, Step 8 states:

"One thing which is often overlooked in getting your computer secure is updating all the security patches that Microsoft has for Windows and Internet Explorer. There is only one caveat... If you are running Windows XP without SP-2, do NOT update to it!!! The update is known to be faulty when there is malware present on your system. This can render your computer system unstartable! So, in short, get all updates you can apart from SP-2!"

Is this correct, i.e. should I avoid SP-2? Thanks,
Jim

Your Hijackthis log is clean Jim.
If you're concerned about installing SP2,create a new System Restore point just as a precautionary measure, then install SP2.

Thanks Ritchie, I just wanted to be sure. I went ahead and downloaded SP-2 and there were no problems. I’ve added my latest HijackThis log. Everything seems to be A-OK on my machine! Any suggestions on how to keep it this way? And if you have time, can you please give me a brief description of what exactly was on my machine? Thanks!!
Jim
