In order to assist you, we need more specific information about your problem. What exactly do you mean by blinking screen?
Are you getting any pop up alerts about spyware or any that say there are problems with your computer?

What OS (Win XP/2000, etc) are you using? What type of anti-virus are you using? Have you performed any anti-spyware scans? Have you tried doing your scans in "Safe Mode"?

Thanks so much for taking time to reply. I hope you will be patient enough cause I am not a techy person with just a little knowhow on PCs.

Anyway, my problem is that sometimes I am getting blinking screen. I turns to black screen like christmas lights turning of and on. i don't really know if its hardware or some virus/trojans. I have kaspersky V6 and I got pop ups of Trojans before but it was deleted by it. i dont know if it was totally out or not and if it is the reason why I am getting this blinking screen or not.

My OS is Win XP. and I got Spybot, Ad-aware and trail version of AVG Anti-Spyware all of which I have gotten from this website. When I was reading forums, they seem to help a lot in protecting PCs.

I have read this one

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/92330/startup-troubles-blinking-screen/

and followed the pattern (except the logs) since I was thinking we have the same problem. the blinking stopped for a while but it returned again.

I hope you could help me out. Thanks a lot for sparing me your time.

You should not be following specific instructions provided to someone else especially in the HijackThis forum. Those instructions were given under the guidance of a trained staff expert to help fix that particular member's problems, NOT YOURS. Before taking any action, the helper must investigate the nature of the malware issues and then formulate a fix for the victim. Although your problem may be similar, the solution is not always the same. Using someone else's fix instructions could lead to disastrous problems with your operating system.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune & save it to your desktop. DO NOT use yet.
Please download and install SUPERAntiSpyware Free
  • Double-click SUPERAntiSypware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
  • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
  • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and unzip into the program's folder.)
  • Under the "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences... button.
  • Click the "General and Startup" tab, and under Start-up Options, make sure "Start SUPERAntiSpyware when Windows starts" box is unchecked.
  • Click the "Scanning Control" tab, and under Scanner Options, make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    • Close browsers before scanning.
    • Scan for tracking cookies.
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen and exit the program.
  • Do not run a scan just yet.
Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • If you use Firefox browser click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
  • If you use Opera browser click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
  • Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Note: On Vista, "Windows Temp" is disabled. To empty "Windows Temp" ATF-Cleaner must be "Run as an Administrator".

Scan with SUPERAntiSpyware as follows:
  • Launch the program and back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
  • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan and click "Next".
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes" and reboot normally.
  • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
    • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
  • Click Close to exit the program.

I just did the instruction and I think it came out clean as nothing was detected but I am still experiencing the blinking.

Here is the log

If your not finding any malware with all these different scans, then its sounds like a hardware/video card problem. Some video cards run so hot that they have their own cooling system. If the fan fails, the video processor will not be far behind and your system may start to become unstable.

There are suggestions for troubleshooting power supply, video card, CPU, RAM, MB and hard drive here and here.

You can use BurnInTest to stress test the CPU, hard drives, RAM, CD-ROMs, CD burners, DVDs, sound cards, graphics, network connection, printers, video playback. This utility works on all Windows versions to include Vista (32-bit & 64-bit).

When was the last time you cleaned the inside of your computer? Dust restricts the airflow and prevents proper cooling. This in turn can cause overheating and faulty processor fans which can result in unexpected shutdowns, random restarts, booting problems, etc.
  • Open your machine, check all the connections and make sure the fans are all operational.
  • Check the heat sink on the processor to ensure it is not blocked with dust or debris.
  • Remove the CPU's cooling unit and clean the fins on the heat sink that sits under the CPU with a can of compressed air.
  • Inspect the thermal compound between the CPU and heatsink as it can break down over time so.
  • Remove the cards and RAM modules, clean the contacts and reseat them.
  • Feel the CPU heatsink when it powers down. It should be warm to very warm but not hot.
  • Monitor the temperature of your CPU, motherboard, hard disks, voltages, and fan speeds.
See "Cleaning the Interior of your PC" and "General Cleaning Tricks & Tips".

Actually, this is a laptop so i cannot open it  .

I do have a cooling fan to help it cool down though. So, it looks like it is a hardware problem, isn't it?

Thanks a lot. Looks like I have a bigger problem. I just bought this Laptop last October. I dont know how to diagnose where the problem really is.

Yes, if your monitor is going bad that could cause various problems. The easiest way to test that is to switch out with another monitor that you know is good.
