Upon startup the "exclamation" sound alert (in the default sound scheme) happens a few seconds after the desktop icons and desktop background are loaded.

I have just reformatted the hard drive and the sound happened before and after.

After that, another sound that is not listed in the default sound scheme happens.

THIS OUGHT TO BE FUNNY! Here goes...it sounds like this: ssshhhhhhhhhhhheeeeeeeeeeeoooooooooooo pop!

What happens if you go into Control panel, sounds and audio devices, sound tab
Select Windows startup & play it. Does it play correctly then?
In the beginning there was the command line.
