Did you install video drivers? The behavior you describe usually indicates that drivers are missing.
Do you have onboard video or a video card? Is your computer custom built or off the shelf?
If you have a video card, you can install the drivers from the disk that came with it or go to the manufacturers website and search for the correct drivers. If it's an off the shelf, your restore disks (whether on a cd or listed as a drive, usually d) should have the drivers included.
Don't know what you have? Run Belarc Advisor-which will give you information about your computer, including the video set up. There are other programs which will also give you the info-others can let you know what they are.
If you need more help, please post information about your computer's video-someone can help you track down the correct drivers. http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
