Alright, so I've got some kind of infection (Vundo and something else, maybe?). I've already ran Disk Cleaner with cleanmgr, performed full system scans with Ad-Aware and SpyBot Search & Destroy, and both Trend Micro PC-cillin and AVG Anti-Spyware programs.

Problem is, I've done this before (along with CounterSpy), and while that seemed to clear it up, I ended up having to system restore because the entire infection came back the next day. Now that Vundo seems to be attacking my system restore (from what Trend Micro is catching through routine scans), I definitely need some help!

Hijackthis Log attached, let me know what else I need to do. I know it's the holidays, but I'd appreciate any help I could get!

I guess maybe my topic got lost in all the rest? So I'll just get back at the end of the line with this bump, I guess.

Hello sparkrabbit and welcome to BleepingComputer!

Apollogies for the delay. The forum has been very busy lately. If you are still having problems please post a brand new HijackThis log as a reply to this topic. Before posting the log, please make sure you follow all the steps found in this topic:

Preparation Guide For Use Before Posting A Hijackthis Log.

Just one final word. "Bumping" is considered rude and will not get you helped any faster. There are nearly 300 people waiting for answers and only so many "hands" being able to help you guys. We all do this in our free time and free of charge. So it does happen once in a while that a response may take longer, especially now in the holiday time. Thanks for the understanding.

Thanks,

Johannes

Thanks, yh. I just got back from the Winter Break, too, so I definitely understand the added delays that the holiday season brings. I just bumped to get to the back of the line of users, but I'll be sure to just be more patient next time.

I did the whole Preparation thing, with the only problem being after I ran SpyBot-- once I clicked to fix, the progress bar loaded a good 3/4 before I got a blue screen that said "A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer," continuing on with some instructions to restart my computer, etc. The technical readout was this:

***STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0x804EF15A, 0xA7509C38, 0x00000000)
Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete
Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further assistance

I'm guessing Vundo was the cause of that, and I've run Vundofix before, but like I said in my original post, it ended up coming back full strength the next day, forcing me to use System Restore-- and now it seems to be hitting System Restore itself. So I definitely need your help!

Here's my new HijackThis log as requested:

  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine
  • The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
Thanks.

Step #1

I noticed that you are running HijackThis from a Temp directory.
Please remove your current HijackThis and lets install a current version into an easily remembered and safe location:
  • Please click here to download hijackthis.exe
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the hijackthis.exe icon on your desktop and install it.
  • Using My Computer/Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis and double click on HijackThis.exe to run it.
  • If you would like to make a shortcut for your Desktop so it's more easily accessable, right click HijackThis.exe and choose Send To > Desktop (create shortcut).
  • Click "Do a system scan only". HijackThis will make a quick scan and show you a list of entries.
Step #2

Please download ComboFix from here and save it to your Desktop.
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results". (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.)
  • Close any open browsers
  • Double click ComboFix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you, combofix.txt. Post that log in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log
Note: Do not mouseclick ComboFix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Step #3

Please post back with the ComboFix log and a fresh HijackThis log. Thanks.

Hey Sparkrabbit,

Step #1
  • Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

    File::
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\rfitumaf.ini
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\cvfredep.ini
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\rwefvpcc.ini
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\wpwkknwb.ini
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\uscxbdqi.ini
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddcdddd.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\mddhadut.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\imsins.BAK

    Folder::
    C:\temp\pt8q3khslw

    DirLook::
    C:\temp

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\ddcdddd]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\mddhadut]
  • Save this as CFScript.txt

    Posted Image
  • Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you, C:\ComboFix.txt. Post that log in your next reply.
    Note:
Do not mouse click combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall
Step #2
  • Please click this link --> http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html
  • When the virustotal page has finished loading, click the Browse button and navigate to the following file and click Submit: C:\WINDOWS\system32\ttprinov.dll
Please post back the results of the scan in your next post.

Step #3

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. A malicious site could render Java content under older, vulnerable versions of Sun's software if the user has not removed them. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u3...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u3-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Step #4

Please post back with a fresh HijackThis log and the ComboFix log. Thanks.

Hey Sparkrabbit,

thanks for the logs  .

Step #1

Now please delete the following files and folders (NB: if you cannot find a file or folder that is just fine):

C:\temp <-- this folder

Step #2

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

Step #3

Please go to Eset Onlinescan (NOD32)
(You need to use InternetExplorer or enable IEView in Firefox)
  • You will then see the Terms of Use, tick the check-box infront of YES, I accept the Terms of Use
  • Now click Start
  • Should you face a Security Warning that asks if you want to install and run a file called "OnlineScanner.cab", click Yes
  • Click Start (the Onlinescanner will now prepare itself for running on your pc)
  • To do a full-scan, tick: "Remove found threats" and "Scan potentially unwanted applications"
  • Press Scan
  • The Onlinescan will now start and scan your pc (this could take a while)
  • When the scan has finished, it will show a screen with two tabs "overview" and "details" and the option to get information or buy software, just close the window
  • Click Start >> Run... >> type: C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  • The Scanresults will now open in Notepad
    • Click into the text area, right-click and chose "select all" (or use ctrl+a)
    • Right-click again and chose "copy" (or ctrl+c)
    • Close Notepad
  • Navigate to this thread and post your log along with anything else requested from us, by right-clicking and "paste" (or ctrl+v) in the text area of the reply post you just created.
Step #4

Please post back with the vundofix.txt and the C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt log. Thanks.

Alrighty, well...VundoFix didn't find anything upon scanning, so I'm hoping that's a good sign.

Ran the EsetOnlineScanner too, and here's the log you requested from that...

Hey Sparkrabbit,

yes that is a good thing and something I anticipated, but wanted proof of  .

Step #1

Please navigate to and delete the VundoFix.exe, as you will not need it anymore.

Step #2
  • Now please navigate to: Start >> Run...
  • Type: Combofix /u and hit Enter
  • This will delete:
    • \Qoobox
    • \VundoFix Backups
    • \Deckard
    • \_OTMoveIt
    • %systemroot%\erdnt\subs
  • Also resets System Restore, re-hides system & hidden files, resets system clock and last but not least, hides the file extensions of known filetypes
Step #3

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Webscan (You need to use InternetExplorer or enable IEView in Firefox)

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save Report as button >> name it >> chose "Text file" in the Save as type dialogue
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Step #4

Please post back with the Kaspersky Onlinescan result and a fresh HijackThis log. Thanks.

Hey Sparkrrabit,

nearly there.

Step #1

Run HijackThis, press Scan, and put a check mark next to all these entries:

O2 - BHO: CBrowserHelperObject Object - {CA6319C0-31B7-401E-A518-A07C3DB8F777} - C:\Program Files\BAE\BAE.dll (file missing)

Close all other windows and browsers, and press the Fix Checked button.

Step #2

Please post a fresh HijackThis log. Thanks.

Deleted the two entries you noted, and here's the fresh HijackThis log...

Hey Sparkrabbit,

well done . Just some final things.

Please also have a look at the following links, giving some advice and suggestions for preventing future infections:I recommend you regularly visit the Windows Update Site!
  • Lots of Hacking/Trojans use the methods found (plugged by the updates) that have not been stopped by people not updating.
  • By updating your machine, you have one less headache! Posted Image
  • Update ALL Critical updates and any other Windows updates for services/programs that you use.
  • If you wish, you can also use automatic updates. This is a good thing to have if you want to be up-to-date all the time, but can also be a bit of an annoyance due to its handling and the sizes of the updates. If you wish to turn on automatic updates then you will find here is a nice little article about turning on automatic updates.
  • Note that it will download them for you, but you still have to actually click install.
  • If you do not want to have automatic updates turned on, or are on dial-up, you can always download updates seperately at: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com.
It is also a good idea to check for the latest versions of commonly installed applications that are regularly patched to fix vulnerabilities. You can check these by visiting Secunia Software Inspector and Calendar of Updates.

For a nice list of freeware programmes in all categories, please have a look at this thread with freeware products that are regarded as useful by the users of this forum: Commonly Used Freeware Replacements.

Another recommendation, is to download HostMan. It safeguards you with a regularly updated Hosts-file that blocks dangerous sites from opening. This adds another bit of safety while surfing the Internet. For installlation and setting up, follow these steps:
  • Double-click the Downloaded installer and install the tool to a location of your choice
  • Via the Startmenu, navigate to HostsMan and run the program.
    • Click "Hosts" in the menu
    • Click "Manage Updates" in the submenu
    • Out of the three, select atl east one of them (I have MVPS Host as my main one)
    • Click "Add Update." After that you will only need to click on the following button to retrieve updates:

  • Click the X to exit the program.
  • Note: If you were using a custom Hosts file you will need to replace any of those entries yourself.
Finally, and definitely the MOST IMPORTANT step, click on the following tutorial and follow each step listed there:

Simple and easy ways to keep your computer safe and secure on the Internet

Glad I was able to help and if there any other problems related to your computer please feel free to post them in the appropriate forum. Though we help people with spyware and viruses here at BC, we also help people with other computer problems! Do not forget to tell your friends about us!
