I have recently found that I can't open files with the extension of "swf". The page opens but in the lower left corner a symbol - yellow triangle with ! on it appears before the word Done, but the page is blank. I have Windows XP

Check to see that Adobe Flash Player is installed, and that .swf files are associated with it.
