This is an older laptop and seems to be running fine, all things considered. I'm not having any particular problems but was just wondering if you see anything that I should adjust to increase performance.

I am running Windows Firewall, Ad-Aware SE Pro and Avast Free edition.

Thank You!

I apologize for the very long delay. We have a huge backlog of HijackThis Logs to handle and it has been taking us greater time than normal to get caught up. If you are still having a problem, and want us to analyze your information, please post a brand new hijackthis log. If we do not hear back from you within a couple of days we will need to close your topic.

When posting your logs please post them directly into the reply. Do not attach them.

Also make sure you have already followed the steps outlined below:

Preparation Guide For Use Before Posting A Hijackthis Log

Thank you for your patience.

Hello Grinler,

You guys do great work and I know you're swamped. There is no rush on this.

I am not having any particular problem. I am trying to keep this old laptop running as efficiently as possible and I've noticed 3 things in my HJT log that are taking up space (although they're probably harmless). These are -

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [!AVG Anti-Spyware] "C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\avgas.exe" /minimized
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WebBuying] C:\Program Files\Web Buying\v1.8.4\webbuying.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WinAble] C:\Program Files\WinAble\winable.exe

I had uninstalled AVG a while back and replaced it with AVAST. (Please not that I've just uninstalled AVAST so that it is no longer inlcuded in my current HJT log. I plan to reinstall it.) There is not a folder in C:\Program Files for either Web Buying or for WinAble.

The entries in the log for Hoyle and WONWebLauncher are where I play spades.

Based on my current HJT log below, do you recommend any changes?

Thank You,

Jack

This entry is for AVG Antispyware (formerly ewido). If you uninstalled it, then you can fix it in HJT:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [!AVG Anti-Spyware] "C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\avgas.exe" /minimized

You do have three malware/adware entries though. Let's get a list of your installed programs and we will go from there.

Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.
More information with a screenshot, can be found here.

  • Download Combofix to your desktop.

  • Doubleclick combofix.exe

  • Follow the prompts.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.

When finished, and after reboot if it asks for one, combofix will open again to gather the necessary information for the log. This may take a while so please be patient. When done, Combofix will close and a log should open called combofix.txt.

Post the contents of this log in your next reply along with a new hijackthislog.

Please do not post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt unless I ask you to.

Did you remove these entries in HJT?

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WebBuying] C:\Program Files\Web Buying\v1.8.4\webbuying.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ISMModule4] "C:\Program Files\ISM\ISMModule4.exe"
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WinAble] C:\Program Files\WinAble\winable.exe

It is good if you did as they were adware, and we were going to do that next, and now I do not see them.

I thought I removed them. I checked the box for these 3 items and clicked on Fix. But they are back in the HJT log again.

Print out these instructions and then close all windows including Internet Explorer.

Then I want you to fix some of those entries. Please do the following:

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then click the Fix button:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WebBuying] C:\Program Files\Web Buying\v1.8.4\webbuying.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ISMModule4] "C:\Program Files\ISM\ISMModule4.exe"
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WinAble] C:\Program Files\WinAble\winable.exe

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

Then delete these files or directories (Do not be concerned if they do not exist)

C:\Program Files\Web Buying\
C:\Program Files\ISM\
C:\Program Files\WinAble\

Reboot your computer to go back to normal mode and post a new log.

I made sure that I could see all hidden files.

Ran HJT and put a checkmark next to the 3 indicated items. Clicked Fix.

Rebooted into Safe Mode. Could not find the file or folder for the 3 items in C:\Program Files

Rebooted into normal mode.

Did a search of the C drive for WinAble. No results were found.

Use this guide to turn off Ad-watch and AVG Antispyware temporarily.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/114351/how-to-temporarily-disable-your-anti-virus-firewall-and-anti-malware-programs/

Then fix the following entries in HijackThis:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WebBuying] C:\Program Files\Web Buying\v1.8.4\webbuying.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ISMModule4] "C:\Program Files\ISM\ISMModule4.exe"
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WinAble] C:\Program Files\WinAble\winable.exe

Reboot and post a new log.

AdWatch settings were changed to Inactive and Manual (Active and Automatic boxes checked).

Ran HJT and put a check in the box by

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WebBuying] C:\Program Files\Web Buying\v1.8.4\webbuying.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ISMModule4] "C:\Program Files\ISM\ISMModule4.exe"
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WinAble] C:\Program Files\WinAble\winable.exe

I also put a check in the box by

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [!AVG Anti-Spyware] "C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\avgas.exe" /minimized

(I had previously uninstalled AVG. This must be something left over from the uninstall.)

I clicked on fix and clicked Yes. Then rebooted.

Upon reboot AdWatch returned to Active (although it remained in Manual) and gave me 4 warnings of an "attempt to alter a protected object has been detected. Attempt to delete a registry value". The warnings were for for the 4 itmes above. I blocked each one.

Note: I just realized the date on my pc is wrong. As a result the data on the HJT log is wrong. I've changed the date on my pc from the 9th to the 8th.

I ran HJT and here's the log.

You want to allow those registry deletions. What is happening is that we are deleting these bad reg entries, ad-watch is seeing it and asking if you want to allow it, and you say to block it so it never gets done. Please do the same steps as above but this time allow the changes to occur. Then post a new log.

This time I accepted the changes. Only the following two changes were requested by AdWatch -

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [!AVG Anti-Spyware] "C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\avgas.exe" /minimized

and

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WebBuying] C:\Program Files\Web Buying\v1.8.4\webbuying.exe

But, all four of the items are now gone after reboot.

I've returned AdWatch to the Automatic setting.
