Hey Guys,

First of all I would like to apologise for rushing and not reading the instructions properly regarding my previous post. I have completed all the steps to Preparation Guide for use before posting a HijackThis Log. Apart from the windows update. This failed I have attached a screenshot of the update site and the relevant error code. My previous post was :

I have an spyware/ malware infection that is proving very difficult to get rid of. If I do not keep on top of this problem I lose administrators rights - even in safe mode. However, each time I log on I run spybot, spyware doctor, registry mechanic and registry booster. As you can imagine this takes quite a lot of time but my computer runs fine until I restart. To try to repair this problem I have also used my XP repair disc and I am seriously considering wiping my hard drive and starting from scratch. I have also noticed that I get an error message on startup when MSN and IE are booting. This is - append.dll is not a valid windows image. Also on start up I recieve a warning from Norton to stop the malicious script - sprtcmd.exe.

I use Windows XP SP2. For virus protection I use Norton. For other threats I use spybot and spyware doctor. Spybot is giving me clean results and spyware doctor is finding and removing Adware.Agent.BN. However, each time I start up I get the exact same result from spyware doctor. That is Adware.Agent.BN is found in append.dll. Once my computer is running "normally" spyware doctor is blocking svchost.exe writing to the registry. The path is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS NT\CURRENTVERSION\WINDOWS,APPINIT_DLLS=C:\WINDOWS\system32\append.dll.

Hello and welcome to BC. :thumbsup:

I apologize for the very long delay. We have a huge backlog of HijackThis Logs to handle and it has been taking us greater time than normal to get caught up. If you are still having a problem, and want us to analyze your information, please post a brand new hijackthis log. If we do not hear back from you within a couple of days we will need to close your topic.

When posting your logs please post them directly into the reply. Do not attach them.

Thank you for your patience.

Hi guys,

Still have a similar problem although I have managed to get windows updates. However, my virus scanner is no longer able to run. I have been running spyware docter and spybot eversince and it looks like the infection is not as bad as it was. However, it is still not sorted:

Hi,

I noticed that you are using Kontiki, which is a p2p file sharing program. Though it may be a dead program now, I would like to warn you that the nature of P2P filesharing is so that even if one is using a "clean" program, many of the files downloaded from non-documented sources have the potential of being infected. So, regardless of whether one is using a "clean" program, one may still be prone to infection by malware because more than half of all files available for download from peer-to-peer networks have been deliberately infected with some form of malware. I recommend that you remove it from your system via Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.

============================================

Please disable Spyware Doctor, as it may interfere with the fix. To disable Spyware Doctor:
  • Click the Spyware Doctor icon in the System Tray.
  • Click Settings.
  • Click Startup Settings under Pick a Category.
  • Uncheck Run at Windows startup.
  • Click Apply and Exit Spyware Doctor
Once your log is clean you can re-enable Spyware Doctor

=============================================

Scan with HijackThis and put a checkmark into the following entries:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

Close all browsers/windows other than HijackThis and click on "fix checked".

============================================

Restart your computer.

============================================

Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune and save it to your Desktop.
Double click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Check the boxes to the left of:

Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache

The rest are optional - if you want to remove the lot, check "Select All".

Finally click Empty Selected. When you get the "Done Cleaning" message, click OK.

If you use the Firefox or Opera browsers, you can use this program as a quick way to tidy those up as well.

Firefox :
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Opera :
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

When you have finished, click on the Exit button in the Main menu.

For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu

============================================

Go to Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and remove if Kaspersky online scanner is present prior to downloading the most up-to-date one.

Now run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  • Standard
  • Scan Options:
  • Scan Archives
  • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
  • Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop in txt format.
Copy and paste that information from Kapersky in your next post.

*Note
It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans for no conflicts and to speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once scan is finished remember to re-enable resident antivirus protection along with whatever antispyware app you use.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

Or use Firefox with IE-Tab plugin

============================================

Please post back a fresh HijackThis log and the Kaspersky scan report.

Hi,

Let's try this to make the log smaller:

Remove Skipped Items From Kaspersky Log
Download Fixedit and save it to your desktop.
Double click Fixedit.exe, use File, Open and open C:\KAV.txt.

After the file loads, switch to the tab labeled "Make Global Changes"
In the upper RED block, click the button labeled "Contains the Test Key anywhere"
In the middle box labeled "Test Key Text", type Infected
In the lower GREEN block, click the button labeled "NO change in the line, except spaces in place of tabs".
At the bottom of the page Check the box labeled "Retain only lines that pass the test parameter, discard the rest".
Then Hit the OK button.

Switch back to the tab labeled "Show/Edit Current Text"
Select the entire modified file (Ctrl-A), Copy (Ctrl-C) and Paste (Ctrl-V) the contents of the file in your reply.
Use Edit, SaveAs and save to your Desktop as KAV2.txt
-----------------------------------------------------------
Please post the contents of KAV2.txt.

Hi,

You're welcome. Please disable the Norton Script Blocking Service. You can re-enable it once the computer is clean.

Click Start>Run, type in services.msc and hit enter.

From the list find ScriptBlocking Service and right click on it... choose properties. Stop the service and change the Startup to Disabled for now and exit the services console.

============================

Have the following entries fixed with HijackThis, like you did before:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =

=============================

Restart the computer for the changes to take effect.

=============================

Go to My Computer> Tools> Folder Options> View>"Uncheck" Hide protected operating system files. Click Apply>OK.

** These files are hidden to stop you or anybody else accidentally removing something important.
It is advisable to hide them again after you're done. **

=============================

Using Windows Explorer (right click on Start, click on Explore) locate and delete the following file:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\G30F1.tmp.exe

=============================

Empty the Norton quarantine folder.
  • Open Norton
  • click Reports
  • click View Quarantine
  • Highlight Quarantine items
  • click Action (at top of box)
  • Delete Make sure everything is deleted in Quarantine list
  • Close Norton.
Or

You can navigate to the following folder and empty the contents:

C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine\

============================

Please post a fresh HijackThis log. How is the computer running now? Are the malware issues resolved?

Hi there,

I have followed the instructions to the letter. However, I am unable to locate C:\WINDOWS\system32\G30F1.tmp.exe. I manually looked through each folder in system 32 and also used the search assistant. My computer is running quite well but Norton is unable to scan for viruses. It has also detected this virus and is unable to delete it automatically. I am only using Norton because I have a year to run on the free subscribtion. I am considering going for a more recent AV such as Kapersky or Panda but have not got round to it. Thx for your quick responses I really appreciate the help I am recieving - Its weird being the one getting support as I work for an internet company :thumbsup:

Hi,

Thx for your quick responses I really appreciate the help I am recieving - Its weird being the one getting support as I work for an internet company

you're welcome. We all need support sometime or other. :thumbsup:

am unable to locate C:\WINDOWS\system32\G30F1.tmp.exe.I manually looked through each folder in system 32 and also used the search assistant.

You had the system set to show hidden files, right? It's visible in the Kaspersky log. I don't know why you can't see them unless you've used another scanner after Kaspersky and it deleted it.

I manually looked through each folder in system 32

It should not be in any sub folder. Should be in the System32 folder itself.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\G30F1.tmp.exe

My computer is running quite well but Norton is unable to scan for viruses. It has also detected this virus and is unable to delete it automatically.

I am a little confused about this. If Norton is unable to scan how was it able to detect the virus..... and what do you mean by "this virus"?

===================================

Those RO entries are being stubborn, or something is placing them back (I suspect Norton).

Please try fixing them in Safe Mode.

If you have an "always on" connection to the internet, physically disconnect that connection until you are finished with Safe Mode and have rebooted back into normal mode.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Scan with HijackThis and put a checkmark against the following entries:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =

Make sure that nothing other than HijackThis is open, and click on "fix checked".

===================================

Reboot to Normal Mode.

===================================

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt here.
  • Please attach extra.txt to your post.
To attach a file to a new post, simply
  • Click the[Manage Attachments] button under Additional Options > Attach Files on the post composition page, and
  • copy and paste the following into the "Upload File from your Computer" box:

    C:\Deckard\System Scanner\extra.txt

  • Click Upload.

Hi,

The logs look good with the exception of those two orphaned RO entries.

am unable to locate C:\WINDOWS\system32\G30F1.tmp.exe.I manually looked through each folder in system 32 and also used the search assistant.

Can you give me the file name and the path of Norton's detection please.
Did you use another scanner which might have deleted it already? Since I am not in front of the computer, I rely heavily on your feedback. How is Norton not able to scan for viruses?

Please delete this folder:

C:\WINDOWS\SxsCaPendDel

===============================================================

As for the stubborn RO entries, I wonder if Norton is interfering. I've seen Norton do that before.
Open your Norton Internet Security, click on options at the top, then click Norton Anti Virus. Look on the left side with the 3 columns. Under the Internet section
at the bottom is Home Page protection. I have never used Norton, so I am not familiar with its settings. See if you have a similar protection for the SearchAssistant and CustomizedSearch. Uncheck the boxes if you find them. Then have those two entries fixed with HijackThis. Reboot .

==============================================================

These are still showing in the DSS extra txt. Please make sure that they are removed via add or Remove Programs in Control Panel..

=============================================================

Scan with Kaspersky again.

=============================================================

Please post a fresh HijackThis log (not the whole DSS log), the Kaspersky report, and let me know how all that went.

Hi there, Just answering the query about Norton - when you select any of the scans it does not load the scan window and the scan is not run. However, Norton does automatically detect threats to the system and it is on one of these notices that I saw a the virus at the path you metioned. I noticed that the path for the virus - "trojan downloader" has changed since the Kapersky scan. I will get back when I complete the troublshoot :thumbsup:
