I've had my computer for two years and have had no problems. I installed McAfee VirusScan less than two weeks ago and have had problems ever since. My computer is freezing up several times a day. I have deleted Ad Aware, which McAfee says in incompatible with it.

I checked event viewer and found I have several errors listed as Error 1402 related to Dell Support 3.1. Coud not open key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\SHAREDDlls, System error 5.

My start up shows three suspect applications: ctfmon, ctfmona, and newmaxxsv234. The cannot remove these applications, so I disabling them from launcing at start up.

Any ideas.

It seems to me that the newmaxxsv234 application is malware - and as such I'd recommend that you visit this forum: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/103/am-i-infected-what-do-i-do/
My browser caused a flood of traffic, sio my IP address was banned. Hope to fix it soon. Will get back to posting as soon as Im able.

Since McAfee didn't catch the trojan and causes problems with your computer I would get rid of it.

While I'm not a fan of McAfee, I'd suspect that the malware was present before you installed the McAfee - and that they're fighting for control of your system (and that's what's causing the freezes).

I've installed NOD32 on several computers already infected and NOD32 had no problem cleaning the infection(s).

It depends on the infection that's present and the antivirus that you're installing. Each infection has a different ability to get around or disable antivirus protection. And, in general, hackers aim for the more common antivirus packages because more people use them - so they stand a greater chance of getting around them.

Recently we've noticed at work that viruses are adapting to other antivirus programs also. The most recent spate of infections has rendered the WebRoot System Analyzer ineffective - so we're having to use other methods at work to show the customers that their system is infected.

Thanks, guys.

I deleted McAfee and reinstalled it. This time it caught the newmaxxsv234. Hopefully, that will take care of the problem.

Hello Arminius

You do have some problems, one being a rootkit and a few others along with updating your java. I would suggest you go over to http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/22/virus-trojan-spyware-and-malware-removal-logs/ and submit a HJT log and ask for help.

Thanks. I got rid of that rootkit and five other malware programs using Prevx CSI. Cost a few bucks but it was well worth it.
